I don't know if there really has been more of it lately or if I'm just getting more sensitive. I really dislike it when women are referred to as 'hag', 'cow', 'bag' or 'witch' and so on.
I find it particularly jarring when these words are used by other women.
Am I alone ?

None of those words bother me

What does irritate me is when a woman says, "Do you think I should just man up?" or "Grow a pair of balls".

I seem to be reading more of that sort of thing lately.

Pootles2010 · 30/09/2014 08:47

I've never really considered those terms sexist, just gender specific insults? So for blokes you'd have wanker, dickhead etc.

The ones that bother me are one that are applied to sexually active women - slut etc, which aren't (generally) applied to men, but you don't see that on here much.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 30/09/2014 08:49

Nope and what Pootles said.

Rusticated · 30/09/2014 09:36

It's struck me too, ConferencePear, and it's unthinking and unpleasant to hear women throwing around insults that have traditionally been levelled at women (especially women considered 'mouthy', ageing or unattractive) by men. The Germaine Greer thread was particularly bad.

Hakluyt · 30/09/2014 09:37

Conferencepear- posters only use words like that to describe older women, so that's OK............

LuisSuarezTeeth · 30/09/2014 09:38

What's an acceptable, non-sexist insult then?

Chiggers · 30/09/2014 09:56

When people (men or women) decide to throw an insult at someone, I don't think they're going to worry about hurting the victim's feelings or who insult they use. I mean, what's the point in insulting a person if you aren't intent on emotionally and mentally hurting them Confused

The problem is that some victims (like myself) become 'immune' to many insults because they've had that most of their lives. I've found that when people try to hurt me in a verbal way, I just roll my eyes and think "what a plonker", then smile manically at them and shrug it off Grin.

Chiggers · 30/09/2014 09:58

Gah, that should be what insult they use.

Coughle · 30/09/2014 10:01

Here are some non sexist non ageist non racist non disablist insults:

Fuckwit
Shithead
Asshole

JoycemynameisJoyce · 30/09/2014 10:03

I've noticed it too. Today I noticed two uses of, "Aunt," to describe an old, mean, childless woman, e.g., "Spiteful old aunt." Maybe they were trying to say, "Cunt," and had an autocorrect failure.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 30/09/2014 10:03

All rather "nether regions" Coughle

Should we not be inclusive of other areas of the body? Grin

Mrsjayy · 30/09/2014 10:11

Slut tart slag offend me more. As does man up and grow a pair.

Mrsjayy · 30/09/2014 10:13

My favourite insult is cowbag as in she is a right cowbag. Asshole doesnt have the same impact and I hate the word cuntfor anybody

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 10:14

I hate get some balls, but i know i have used it recently Blush
I cant think of an informal equivalent...?

Vivacia · 30/09/2014 10:19

I think there's some use of homophobic language that's tolerated, e.g. "knob jockey" used a fair bit on a thread I was reading last night. Something about it's use made me wonder if people didn't realise it was the same as saying, e.g. "poofter".

Also, "ladyboy".

ArsenicFaceCream · 30/09/2014 10:32

What pootles said.

Skank, slag, slut, bint etc

Nasty

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/09/2014 10:36

Not a term I use viv, but I did not know that re knob jockey

splendide · 30/09/2014 10:41

The most sexist term I see on here is cocklodger - I'm considering trying to popularise cuntlodger to even things out. Might liven up the SAHM threads?

Mrsjayy · 30/09/2014 10:44

Yea knob jockey horrible term means somebody is gay its insulting

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone · 30/09/2014 10:45

Coughle -I thought "fuckwit" is disablist because it links to "half-wit".

Cherub1066 · 30/09/2014 10:46

I'm liking cunt-lodger. What about smack-grandad, as oppose to granny. Also, what are your thoughts on cock-sucker?

ithoughtofitfirst · 30/09/2014 10:48

Bint?! Ah c'mon arsenic i googled it before i used it this morning and made a judgement call Grin

Hmm

ithoughtofitfirst · 30/09/2014 10:49

Smack-granny?! Never seen this! Pmsl.

Cherub1066 · 30/09/2014 10:56

I might have invented smack-granny! It's a woman who has a really fit body and dresses well but has aged dramatically in the face. Ideal candidates for 10 years younger. They often own their own home and unfortunately seem to attract cock lodgers.
