AIBU?

To have shouted at this person for taking more than 2 apples from my box of apples outside my

I have an apple tree in my garden which grows nice big cooking apples. We just moved here and I thought it would be nice to put a box outside our house for neighbours.

Anyway, I put a sign up saying "free to take, 2 per person" so all our neighbours got some.

I just saw a man come in a car and was piling up a tesco bag full of my apples and taking them to his boot.

I went running outside and asked him what he thought he was doing and to put them back. He looked at me and said it says free apples. I told him it's 2 per person. He just ignored me and sat in his car and drove off.

Now my box of apples is empty and some person who doesn't even live on my road has taken them all. I'm really not happy.

Why would someone do this? AIBU?

People are arseholes. I'm amazed it's taken you this long to realise it. Hmm

Because people are entitled twats.

It might be best to know on your neighbours doors with the box and dish them out that way in future.

Dunno, maybe he can't read?

He was a bit cheeky but I think YAB a little bit U. Lots of people round here offer free apples but I've never seen anyone put a limit on number. If you want your neighbours to have some, you could take them round a few each. Personally, I'd just be glad that someone was using them rather than having them go to waste.

He didn't see the "2 apples per person" maybe?

The "2 per person" was written clearly. He just chose to ignore it.

Two seems rather too few to do anything with, unless they are huge apples. When I help myself from kind people's offerings, I would take three or four small ones: enough to make a pie or crumble with.

But I agree he was greedy.

People see "free" and the greed comes upon them. Same as the entitled freaks on free cycle and similar. I have thrown away perfectly good stuff rather that see it going to some grabby fekker.

One of life's takers then clearly....

Well if he really did choose to ignore it, then obviously he's out of order.

On another note, the people in our street normally have a sign saying 'Take a few'.

I'm not sure what I would do with 2 cooking apples. I normally need 4 for an apple crumble.

Putting a 2 apple limit on the sign does seem strange- there isn't much you could do with just 2, and I'd rather people just helped themselves and took as many as they wanted. Within reason though- that man was definitely cheeky and greedy.

Perhaps don't leave boxes of stuff outside for people to take if you get upset when people take them.

If you wanted specific people to have a specific amount, it may have been better to pop round and give them their allotted amount in person.

Bit odd to put a number. If you want to evenly distribute amongst your neighbours, then take 2 round to each neighbour.

But 2 is a bit of a silly number isn't it, in any event?

YWBU - why limit them? They're bloody cooking apples not gold ingots. If you're happy to give then away surely you just want them to go to someone who'll use them Confused

I doubt he was selling them in for a profit

They're quite big apples worralibery . I put out all the nice big healthy looking ones and used the small ugly ones for myself.

Lots of people near us put free apples out ,I've never seen a sign to limit numbers so you might find you are not making the impression you want to on the new neighbours . That said its a bit greedy filling a bag up but I wouldn't have challenged him ,you either want them to give them away or you don't ,does it really matter how many in the scheme of things .

it was a nice gesture but there's a certain type of person that will always take advantage. You ever seen people at an 'all you can eat' buffet?

It's the same mentality.

Why is 2 a silly number?

Because it probably isn't enough to make an apple crumble for a family.

Report
Behoove · 28/09/2014 12:30

You wanted everyone to see how generous you are? Hmm

However, there is a difference between taking 3 or 4 /enough for a crumble and filing a whole bag. That's greedy.
