To send a letter of complaint to the driving instructor?

We live on a quiet part of a large housing estate. Very few cars come down the road as there is another road parallel to ours which serves another part of the estate.

It would seem that our road is being used by at least three different driving instructor schools to practise junctions, parking etc. I have and cannot have any objection to anyone using the highway but this evening in the space of 30 mins, one car did a loop of our road 14 times. This is not an isolated incident just what I observed today after DC came back in from playing as it was not worth playing outside as they had to dodge the learner car.

Obviously I would not say anything to the instructor whilst he had a client with him as that would be unfair on the learner. But....I am starting to get really peeved that they have chosen our road to go round and round. Sunday afternoons seem to be the worst.

I appreciate that learners need to practise somewhere but our street - evey day?

So.. Would I be unreasonable yo write to all three instructors asking them to move on? DP says I should let it lie but it annoys the hell out of me.

I'd leave it. Wouldn't bother me personally.

Erm...it's a PUBLIC highway...clue's in the name.

It's a public road, and yours will not be the only one that is favoured by driving instructors. Tune it out. It's no biggy is it?

OddBoots · 19/09/2014 20:08

Where on the public highway would you want to practice if you were a learner driver?

Report
wheresthelight · 19/09/2014 20:10

yabu it has no affect on you so why are you so bothered about it?

Where did you learn?

You're not special. It isn't a private road. Sorry.

It's a public road so anyone can drive around the block as many times as they wish.

Is this a wind-up?

Yes...where did you learn to drive OP?

When I learnt to drive, we started off in the trading estate to get used to the road, junctions etc then progressed to estate roads and then more main roads. I don't remember going to the same road every week. We went to different places to get experience of different junctions, signs etc

Like I said, I appreciate it's the public highway but they must spend a great proportion of their lessons doing a loop of our road.

Yes it probably is no biggie but it is just so annoying!!!

It's a public road. Unless they damage your cars or start going onto the pavement or your drives then they wont do anything.

CatsCantTwerk · 19/09/2014 20:17

What actually is it that you find annoying?

No...but I bet your instructor took all his/her new pupils on the same roads that you started on, before they too would progress on to busier roads just like you did. Doh.

How do you know its the same learner?

Honestly, stop curtain twitching.

What would the 18 yr old you have said to your OP?

If you look on the positive side, at least while they're crawling along slowly all the time you've got yourself a free neighborhood watch, as I doubt burglars and the like would target a road which was in constant use like this #hopeful

In my experience (and believe me, I took YEARS to pass my test) they do move around the town so as not to piss off the residents of any one area too much.

I feel your pain, our road is on the test route so all the learners come down here. I'm not exaggerating to say that in one day it wouldn't be unusual to have in the region of 50 cars reverse round ours, they even queue up to reverse round cars! Total pain in the arse trying to get in and out the street.

I know where you're coming from too, the road behind my mams is used for learner lorry drivers. They block the whole road reversing 40ft lorries around a blind corner. Drives me demented!! Angry

I live on a quiet road near a driving test centre. We constantly have leaners up and down and practicing turns in the road.
It drives me insane, the constant hum of idling engines, interspersed with over revving.
On average I have to wait for two before I can get home each time I drive down the road.
Nothing can be done about it though.

Why did your DC have to dodge the learner drivers was he playing in the road or was drivers mounting the pavement?

My DD is not confident with roundabouts so if there was a road with lots of roundabouts her driving instructor would take her there

It happens on our road, can't say it bothers me. I had to do a 3 point turn in my own road when I had my test!

Hi Guys, I am a Driving Instructor and completely understand this from both sides. A Learner needs quiet roads to start with to 1, build their confidence and practice. 2, If they are unprepared for busier roads, it inconveniences other motorists. 3, If it was my Street I would not be happy either. Whilst some above say it's a public highway, they are correct and in essence, you cannot stop them.
However... I do question how bored a learner would be driving around in circles for £25 per hour & the how much value for money they received.
Personally I would send a courtesy email to say you have converns and politely ask them not to continuously use your area for long periods of time. I do however fear that it may fall on deaf ears, but the instructor won't know it bothers anyone until you tell them.
There is a residential area where i work & one Summers day saw 7 learners doing the turn in the road within 200yards. I tell my instructors that they can only use the area once a day, on the basis that it would bother me if I lived there.
If the instrucors become more constant in your area, call your local test centre manager and they will issue a bulletin to the Instructors who use the centre & formally request that your street not be used.
I hope this is helpful to all of you. :0)

Your street is obviously a good street to learn in. We've all been there at some point in our lives - get over it.
