To not understand why white bread is evil?

AndyWarholsOrange · 14/09/2014 18:31

OK I understand it's not good for you in the way that cabbage and goji berries are but when exactly did it become a crime (on MN anyway) to give your DCs a slice of white toast?
I understand that saturated fat is bad because it clogs up your arteries; salt can raise blood pressure and affect bone density and excessive sugar intake can mess with insulin and cause diabetes but what does white bread actually do that's so terrible?

Nothing. There would be more goodness in brown, although unless your diet is unrelieved bread and water not significant amounts.

But it's become one of those middle-class shibboleths, like thinking honey and fruit juice contain a special sort of sugar that's not like that nasty white stuff the working classes eat.

HeySoulSister · 14/09/2014 18:34

Does it contain salt, sugar and saturated fat?

I think of white bread as being a carb laden 'filler'. Nothingness I suppose

Notmeagain1 · 14/09/2014 18:34

I dont know either. To be honest, I bloody love the stuff, but try not to eat much of it.

Nomama · 14/09/2014 18:38

It isn't evil, it's just, nutritionally, a waste of time. Wholemeal is better, forget brown bread, it is just white bread with food colouring - read the label if you don't believe me Smile

But white bread is sandwichly great Smile

It's just that it is calorific, has quite a lot of salt and sugar, is highly processed and, unless fortified, is not all that 'good'.

Vitalstatistix · 14/09/2014 18:40

Apart from not having any discernible nutritional benefit, it's a bit rubbery and tasteless. Which is its biggest crime. Grin If you eat something, it should probably be the thing that of all the variety of that thing available, contains the best nutrition.

However. It is the ONLY bread that it is acceptable to make a fishfinger sandwich out of Grin. This is non negotiable.

As is the salad cream it should also contain. Someone on here who shall remain nameless, nearly got herself defriended on fb for having hers with ketchup.

you have to take a stand. You just can't be friends with that type of person.

unicycle · 14/09/2014 18:46

It's not just sugar that can cause your insulin levels to soar and contribute to diabetes, highly processed carbohydrates like white bread do so too. The digestive system doesn't have to work very hard to break down the bread as it is so highly processed, so the sugars rush into the bloodstream, causing the insulin surge, unlike with wholemeal bread.

GeraldineFangedVagine · 14/09/2014 18:50

I made a white loaf today. Tasted nothing like shop bought white bread and was chewy and delicious. I put a tsp of salt in, but no sugar. It was a yellowy colour which Just goes to show how bleached/processed the shop type is. Im going to try wholemeal next week.

m0therofdragons · 14/09/2014 18:53

white Tiger loaves are evil... mostly because I can't just eat one slice, more like huge chunks.... yummy though Grin

CarmineRose1978 · 14/09/2014 18:54

I think people often tar all white bread with the same brush. I'm not saying a lovely crusty artisan white baguette is any healthy than a white sliced Chorleywood loaf, but there's certainly a difference in taste!

SnoogyWoo · 14/09/2014 18:56

www.marksdailyapple.com/why-grains-are-unhealthy/

Grain is nasty and meant to be eaten by birds not humans. It's prevelant in our society purely because it is cheap and profitable, not for its nutritional value.

ODearMe · 14/09/2014 18:59

All grains are bad for you

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/09/2014 19:00

According to mn cereal is also evil, it makes me laugh.

Badvoc123 · 14/09/2014 19:01

Check out a book called wheatbelly.
Very illuminating.

JustAShopGirl · 14/09/2014 19:02

White bread from a shop has to contain added calcium by law. Brown/wholemeal does not.

Where wheat is concerned - White bread contains only the starchy middle bit of the grain,

Wholemeal/wholegrain contains the whole-grain - wheat does not have a heavy "husk" covering to separate the bran layer from the outside world, so organic is best - but what folks seem to forget wholegrain ALSO contains the starchy middle bit of the grain - so is white bread with fibre and not always added calcium.

Bread is bread - none of it is that great for you - it is always just a "filler"

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 19:03

What do you mean 'meant'?
All cultures eat grains.

I love a nice organic white loaf, me. Make them quite frequently.

gordyslovesheep · 14/09/2014 19:04

nothing - it's nice and we need carbs as part of a varied diet - pmsl @ grains being evil Grin

PenisesAreNotPink · 14/09/2014 19:05

Tiger bread is crack cocaine to me

What the fuck is it made of? Satans unicorn antlers? The fucking holy grail?

It's amazing

MsUumellmahaye · 14/09/2014 19:06

We had rather snooty friends to stay and when they opened my bread bin they shouted the kids to come look at the white bread! Grin

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 19:06

Yep, grains are fine. Many are very lovely. Entire continents subsist on rice - and not that vile brown stuff either.

Kiffykaffycoffee · 14/09/2014 19:07

Not enough fibre, gives you constipation. Wholemeal bread is better because it keeps oyu feeling full for longer, gives you a slower release of energy. love white bread toasted with thick butter though

Onetwothreeoops · 14/09/2014 19:11

When did it become wrong again? Last I heard white bread was better that whole wheat bread for kids because it didn't fill them us as much and therefore stop them eating other more nutritional parts of their meal.

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 19:12

Yep, too much fibre isn't good for very small kids.

This is the sort of thread that makes me want to lie about the pasta consumption of the Inferiority Complex.

Bread has been eaten for century's and is a good source of nutrients. Problem is its low cost so doesn't make much money so people try to put it down. 4 slices of white bread contain 50% of your calcium intake.

Sallystyle · 14/09/2014 19:14

Saturated fats are not thought to contribute towards high cholesterol/ clogging arteries anymore really.

A lot of more research needs to be done but so far it is looking very likely that there isn't a link.

Many people have been saying it for bloody years. The link between the two is unproven many studies are now saying.

Bring on the white bread! I like carbs, they don't upset me in any way so I am fine with eating them.

fatlazymummy · 14/09/2014 19:15

Of course it isn't evil. And it isn't just 'starch' either. All bread contains protein (3.0gs in a small white slice) and various other nutrients (calcium, iron, vits b1 and b3).
OP, I suggest you use a bit of common sense, and some basic knowledge about food rather than the books suggested above. It's all you need really.
