Hi,

Tesco has stopped stocking a Free From Smoothie that contains a high level calcium, and is very well suited for allergy children.

My DS has multiple allergies and it is very difficult to get enough calcium inside him. These smoothies are the only thing he accepts and 3 of them give him enough calcium for the day. They were especially good not just because of the taste but also because of the design of the pouches, which are almost the same as Ella's kitchen pouches, and my DS was already familiar to them and took a liking to them immediately.

Unfortunately Tesco has stopped stocking them and discontinued them. With a multiple allergy child it is very difficult to get enough nutrients in them, and this is a big blow to many, including us. Would you be kind enough to sign this petition asking Tesco to restock them?

www.petitions24.com/signatures/save_tesco_free_from_smoothies/

Thanks! :)

could you not just give a calcium supplement

magoria · 29/08/2014 23:04

Trouble is they are there to make a profit. If they don't make a profit they will not stock it and lose money. And Tesco isn't exactly known for it's decency is it Sad

Can you not get the ingredient list and make your own? Perhaps if he could help you then he may like them despite the lack of packaging?

Waltonswatcher · 29/08/2014 23:11

I make my dd a smoothie style drink. It's also her calcium boost .
I pop it in a flask and take it out with us , perfect for getting some calories into her.
I found if I served it with a straw she drank more btw .
I never liked the bought ones - too much fruit sugars .
But , I am sorry for you , it sounds like your old reliable and this must be a blow . With kids allergies we all have our ' good old reliables' , mine is buckwheat slices .
Will have a look at the link .

ChangeIsNear · 29/08/2014 23:42

He doesn't take the calcium supplement prescribed and the other one contains lactose.

This is food and high in calcium. Other sources of green are not being accepted by DS. He does have multiple allergies and is extremely fussy.

There is a calcium supplement in syrup form you can buy. Could you make your own smoothies and add it?

Andrewofgg · 30/08/2014 08:16

Nobody loves Tesco (except those of us who keep them in business) but why would they give shelf-space to a line which does not sell instead of one which does?

The people buying the line which does might be disappointed if that line was withdrawn.

HappyAgainOneDay · 30/08/2014 08:20

Don't any other shops sell it?

Candycharm · 30/08/2014 08:22

My son too has allergies and it is incredibly annoying when something you buy just dissapears. I had the same issue with white chocolate buttons afew years ago, they did eventually get them back in but it was a pain. The fact that you rely on them for your sons calcium is irritating though.

An alternative could be just to make him smoothies!? I use oat milk (the blue one, it's calcium fortified) and then just add bananas or strawberry and honey or yoghurt. I let my son choose so it encourages him to drink it! It's probably a lot healthier than anything you can buy too.

MarkWrightsLonelyBraincell · 30/08/2014 08:30

Have you spoken with the store manager?

Tesco have their faults but I have known them to order in specific products if they are bought locally.
My MIL had the same issue with missing a long standing product she bought that was discontinued. She queried it, and to give them their dues they started to sell it again. Some are really customer focused.

Meloria · 30/08/2014 08:40

This is as ludicrous as the petition to make holiday companies charge lower prices in school holiday periods. Market forces dictate what is sold and for what price. Tesco is not a charity to promote the health of children with allergies.

WaywardOn3 · 30/08/2014 08:48

Why not look online for it? You may find that several places stock it :-)

MrsWinnibago · 30/08/2014 08:53

OP use this as a business opportunity. Make your own, market and sell it. Not kidding..you have a vested interest and the knowledge.

Bowlersarm · 30/08/2014 08:56

Sorry op but if it's a product which isn't selling, why should they invest in it?

WaywardOn3 · 30/08/2014 08:56

Have a look at this site it has lots of creative vegan, allergy free and high calcium smoothies you can make

www.healthfulpursuit.com/2012/07/18-healthy-vegan-smoothies/

WaywardOn3 · 30/08/2014 08:57

And there's this recipe too :-)

Calcium-Rich Cranberry Smoothie
A snap to whip up, this smoothie makes a refreshing breakfast (or any time) drink, with just the right amount of sweetness. Sesame seeds are high in calcium, as are almonds, and both will add creaminess to this drink as well.
1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened soy, almond, rice or hemp milk
1/2 cup (120 ml) cranberries, fresh or frozen
1/2 pear, cored (you can keep the skin on)
2 Tbsp (30 ml) sesame seeds
2 Tbsp (30 ml) raw natural almonds
1 scoop plain or vanilla rice-based protein powder (I use BioNature)
1 1-inch (2.5 cm) piece of fresh ginger, peeled
15-25 drops plain or vanilla liquid stevia, to taste
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Drink immediately. Makes one serving.

MidniteScribbler · 30/08/2014 09:02

Could your local store get it in for you if you commit to buying a certain amount. My local grocery store has stopped stocking a product I use several times per year in quite significant amounts, but they will special order if when I have a litter because I commit to buying a certain amount over the eight week period to make it worthwhile getting in for them.

They are a business, not a charity, and they are there to make money for their shareholders. If you want them to do something, you need to make it commercially viable for them.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 30/08/2014 09:29

To those saying 'it's a business', 'petitions don't work ' etc etc. They do work - and partly because they raise awareness of the product and then it does become a viable business proposition - witness BBC6 music which is now really popular, and has seen audience growth because of the campaign to keep it.

fluffyduffydoo · 30/08/2014 09:35

do you have a link to the original product?

Maybe we can help you source it elsewhere or breakdown the ingredients so you can replicate it at home?

cricketpitch · 30/08/2014 09:44

There will be smaller or other retailers who do stock it. Support their decision to do so by becoming a customer.

Tesco almost control the market and they can do that because people like shopping there, (for whatever reasons). The more ethical retailers or those that cater for a less mass market customer lose business because it is so hard to compete.

Clarabum · 30/08/2014 09:45

done

ChangeIsNear · 30/08/2014 09:48

This is the original product:

www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=276328754

I can't find it anywhere else.

DS is 15 months and will not drink homemade smoothies (I have tried!) or have a liquid calcium supplement. It's the squeezy pouch that is attractive.

The closest thing to this is the Wot No Dairy pea based yogurts, but they have a bad history of cross contamination.

I just dont see how you can force Tesco to stock something that doesnt sell well (if it sold well they wouldnt have discontinued it). 3 of them a day is also a hell of a lot of sugar.

todayiamfat · 30/08/2014 09:54

OP, you can buy the squeezy pouches to add your own stuff too. You can reuse them. I bought mine in Aldi, but I'm sure if you look online....I think the brand was koko.

ilovepowerhoop · 30/08/2014 09:55

www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=250498217 - what about calcium enriched orange juice?
