DS (who is 9) wanted a bedtime story - yet again he wanted me to narrate The Day He Cut His Head And Had To Go To A&E.

'Was there loads of blood, Mum? Was it like a fountain? Hee hee hee...'

I mean, I was a morbid little beast at that age, too, I suppose, with a bookcase full of MR James and HP Lovecraft, so perhaps I shouldn't complain.

On the bus the other day, ds was asking me a million and one questions about death, funerals, cremation, burials, ghosts and skeletons. Cheery start to the day that was.

We walked past our local cemetery recently, so I explained to DD (3) what it was and said that we could go and have a look some time (she is really interested in death). She said "yes, can we go and dig up the dead bodies, what would they look like?"

She used to have ishoos with death and her own mortality, but more recently hasn't been so bothered, but says "it's ok, we're going to die on the same day". While I certainly hope not, I tend to ignore it as I think that the ensuing conversation would probably get a bit heated.

DD told me this evening that she wants to have a skull to put on her desk.

Ds (11) had his stitches out yesterday, he's had a stent out in his eye that's to stay in ideally for two months. He's enjoyed all the gory diagrams etc in the run up to surgery.

The consultant explained after pulling the stitches out and presenting them for inspection, that it could pop out on its own early. And if it did just pull it out.

Ds and I went "coooooooool"

And now we he secretly hope it does.

My friend's son told me with glee about his head injury, including the fact that you could 'see his skeleton through the hole'.

Not just mine then, which is reassuring. I suppose the only reason it bothers me is that I actually don't like reliving that afternoon very much. Even though I knew that DS was going to be OK (he fell, cut his head, typical lots-of-blood head injury but he was on his feet and talking within seconds...) it was still one of those OMG-could-have-been-sooooo-much-worse moments.

When ds1 was in nursery he drew people with knives in their necks constantly... he was a shy child and I did worry for a while... (I dont know where it came from as he was very sheltered and a pfb...)
Hes now 14, zombie and horror films mad but the gentlest most loving boy ive ever met!!

Mummy I feel so angry with you. I want to hit and bite you until blood comes out of your head and your head falls off.

To which he receives lots of praise for using his words to express himself and not ACTUALLY hitting and biting as he used to do! He is 3.

DS1 (3), is very deadpan about it all.

My brother went in one morning to get my niece ~ who at that time was 4 ~ up for nursery to find her lying awake looking at the ceiling arms crossed over her chest.

Not unreasonably he asked what she was up to. Without even looking at him gave a big sigh and said 'Just thinking about dead people daddy'

I had a model of Elisabeth Bathory complete with virgin heads on spikes. DD carried the heads on spikes around for a good 6 months aged 2

I don't have children but apparently my favourite programme when I was little was 'Your Life in Their Hands'!

I haven't improved with age either. I was very impressed with the pictures of my insides when I had my gallbladder removed.

(This is despite the fact I am so terrified of needles my veins shut down when I last had a blood test!)

I've just remembered that when I was young, I kept my friends stitches that he had had in his head - they were in a matchbox in my room for years. I am clearly to blame for the fact that my son apparently wants a 'big cut' on his leg...

We're going through a death obsession at the moment with DD (4) probably due to the recent death of DH's nan. She is literally driving me insane with the daily barrage of questions & sweetly she also feels the need to ask when I might kick the bucket soon I hope if the obsession doesn't subside

My dd(4) has already told us that she wants all our stuff when we die. Not so much ghoulish as mercenary.

We had our elderly cat put to sleep at home. Instead of being upset, DS1 then 5, rushed in from school, looked at where he had last seen the cat and asked "Was there any blood?"
