Just that. My younger niece is doing a 3 week volunteer thing. I want her to have some pocket money.
That's ok, I think.

Sure is okay, very kind of you. Who is objecting?

gordyslovesheep · 21/08/2014 20:01

why do you need to ask?

ShatnersBassoon · 21/08/2014 20:03

Why wouldn't you if it's what you want to do?

ilovesooty · 21/08/2014 20:04

Do it if you want to. Why should anyone on a forum need to comment?

OfaFrenchMind · 21/08/2014 20:08

Lovely of you! Why not! The only thing she will have to do is to secure it, and enjoy her experience!

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/08/2014 20:14

I think thats lovely.
I had was given the opportunity to do an expedition when I was younger, and still sometimes feel sad I was never able to raise the money 25 years later!
Good for you, and lucky her!

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2014 20:14

I'm sorry, but I think you are being very unreasonable.

trufflesnout · 22/08/2014 12:14

I've no idea how expensive the cost of living is in Sri Lanka but I would check out how much is appropriate once it's been converted to rupees if I were you.

I'm bloody nosey fascinated to know why Blether

bbcessex · 22/08/2014 12:36

On the face of it, absolutely not unreasonable, it's great that you'll give her some money.. I suppose the unreasonable bit would be dependent on family; has her mum suggested that your niece do jobs etc. to raise money toward the trip, that she hasn't done? Has a sibling done a similar trip and you haven't gifted a similar amount?

If no complications, then I can't see at all why you shouldn't give her spends.. the amount is up to you. Euro 250 is quite a lot to spend in the country though - if I were you, I would give it 'toward' the trip, so she can use it toward equipment / backpack / airport stuff too though... there may not be that much to spend on in Sri Lanka, although some mementos would be great..

Why try to twist this into an AIBU when it clearly is not one

Well clearly it is one Quietly as Blether will attest!

ImperialBlether · 22/08/2014 19:25

Oh ffs I was joking!

OP says "AIBU to give a child money for a trip?" It's a self-congratulatory thread, not an AIBU thread. We are supposed to say "Oh, OP, you are SO kind" - and yes, she is, but for crying out loud, why come on here for validation for such a thing?

Hence my response! (And I'd been reading that thread about getting flamed for nothing...)

queenofthemountain · 22/08/2014 19:36

I hate these holidays dressed up as 'volunteering' so that they can ask people to give money to pay for it.
I am sure that charity would more appreciate the thousands of pounds she is raising for the trip rather than a dippy teenager hanging round for a week or so.

Goodness, no idea why I posted in the first place. Possibly because my niece thought it was a lot?
No stealth boasting, though as I regularly holiday in Sri Lanka.

NannyR · 22/08/2014 19:49

Putting aside the whole volunteering as a holiday thing, €250 will go a long, long way in Sri Lanka. €50 might be more appropriate as a contribution towards spending money.

specialsubject · 22/08/2014 19:51

Way too much. I hope she has checked out the company, voluntourism can be a bad thing.

Sorry OP but this has made me Grin

Having spoken to her yesterday, I probably know more about where she is going than she does.
I usually give all my nieces and nephews EUR 100 at Christmas and a smaller amount for birthdays.
I work, I can afford it.
Why are you all being so unreasonable? I would give more, but she was knocked out at the amount, although she needs to supply the correcy bank details first.
I understand tha in the UK you do not need to know your EUR IBAN or BIC.

Sorry, what?

rf241 · 22/08/2014 21:13

This is a strange thread....

Sicaq · 22/08/2014 21:22

OK, I'll be the token cynic.

What is your niece doing? If she has a skill that is urgently needed in Sri Lanka, then supporting her transport there is fantastic. If it's a holiday funded by other people, disguised as do-gooding, then personally I would not fund it. But entirely your choice.
