hi i was just sitting here thinking that these commonwealth games are not much more than the home nation,s competing against each other and are giving the athletes the impression they are world class .i mean no america in athletics .no america /russia in gymnastics .sorry but i think its not been great .and i am scottish .and we should not be having a rebel song masking as a national anthem .great song at new year but not on when english competetor standing beside them .

Nothing in papers about them. I looked this morning in attempt to see how england doing. Asked patients about them today and no one watching including man who watches sport whilst recovering from cancer. Us it on normal TV . Hard to follow london 2012 I think....

YABU

The Games have been great.

The gymnastics has been world class I believe.

I love Flower of Scotland.

goindowntoyasgursfarm Fri 01-Aug-14 17:49:45

You do know God Save the Queen contains the line "Rebellious Scots to crush"? grin

Sirzy Fri 01-Aug-14 17:50:02

The gymnastics has been amazing

Euphemia Fri 01-Aug-14 17:52:25

So should we just not bother, april?

londonrach Fri 01-Aug-14 17:52:46

Ok what people wAtching..

londonrach Fri 01-Aug-14 17:53:12

I'm missing it...

Pobblewhohasnotoes Fri 01-Aug-14 17:53:29

I'm enjoying it.

aprilanne Fri 01-Aug-14 17:54:16

i like the flower of scotland at new year just not at the games .while the gymnastics have been alright to watch we really have only been competing amonst other britians exept a few other,s .and no i did not realise about god save the queen .maybe we should have scot,s wa hae .

ilovesooty Fri 01-Aug-14 17:54:28

I'm sure the athletes have noticed that the Americans and Russians are absent.

Namechangearoonie123 Fri 01-Aug-14 17:55:12

I think it's great

Not least for the different types of bodies shown, particularly women. In watching normal tv or reading magazines we don't see any athletic bodies at all, usually just very thin.

I like the counterpoint.

Yes yabu unless you are a world class athlete yourself....
It's a great games and I have enjoyed watching it.
Great for those sportsmen and women who are bloody brilliant but not necessarily Olympic class.

Fluffyears Fri 01-Aug-14 17:55:47

God save the queen is a racist song so
I refuse to have that as my anthem. Flower of Scotland is not a 'rebel song' it's a story. The English army decided in a quiet stealth attack so removed their boots, they stood on thistles (flower of Scotland) and the cries of pain from stepping barefoot on the thorns woke up the sleeping scots who defended themselves. It's about Scotland overcoming adversity. Why do England not have a national anthem? They have to use the British one.

weegiemum Fri 01-Aug-14 17:56:09

I'm in Glasgow it's been amazing.

I'd rather have Flower of Scotland than Jerusalem - And did those feet? No they didn't! Was Jerusalem builded (it's BUILT!!) here - no, it wasn't!

We've watched it, gone to community events, dc were at stuff yesterday.

Commonwealth Games were never going to be the Olympics. Why would they? But it's been awesome to be in Glasgow while it's been going on!

aprilanne Fri 01-Aug-14 17:56:35

londonrach .they games are not on same level as olympics .you are right there .

Oh and flower is a fab song for us. Maybe a little controversial for the englanders but hey they started it! grin

thecageisfull Fri 01-Aug-14 17:57:22

But they are world class. You could say the same about any sport's Continental championships (European Championships, African Nations etc.)
We don't have to wait for Russia/USA to come out with with their ball.

Scottish swimming has been unbelievably good.

DejaVuAllOverAgain Fri 01-Aug-14 17:58:00

The Commonwealth games have been shown on the BBC although I've not seen them. I have heard bits about them on GMB in the mornings, England are at the top of the leader board for medals or they were this morning.

Chippednailvarnish Fri 01-Aug-14 17:58:00

What about the new world records that have been set?

How can you say that doesn't make them world class?

Pobblewhohasnotoes Fri 01-Aug-14 17:58:25

Why would Russia be in it?

Am I missing a point here?

IHaveBrilloHair Fri 01-Aug-14 17:59:11

I've loved it, bern at three events and warched loads on tv, amazing atmosphere in the town too.
one more event tomorrow morning I hope, I'm quite sad it's my last one.

Kenyan and Jamaican runners dominate at all running events, including the Olympics. They are at the Commonwealth Games, ditto Australian swimmers. Plenty of Olympic standard athletes across all events. I think the Games have been fabulous for Glasgow, Scotland and Britain. Isn't it fantastic to showcase another part of Britain to the world?

SixImpossible Fri 01-Aug-14 18:01:21

These are world class athletes, even if other world class athletes are absent. Take Lewis Something, for example: silver medal in the Olympics (that world class enough for you?), but bronze medal in the Commonweatlh Games.

If Scotland is competing as a separate country to England, then GSTQ is inappropriate for either (ditto for Wales and NI, of course).

But TBH I do not get why or how the GB is participating as 4 different countries. Scotland is not devolved. The Scottish athletes hold British passports. If I was from one of the other Commonwealth countries I think I would see this as cheating: a way of allowing Great Britain to field more athletes and have a greater chance of winning more medals than the other countris.

aprilanne Fri 01-Aug-14 18:01:56

well maybe it,s me but i am just underwelmed by the whole thing .maybe the stupid dancing teacakes have put me off .
