I am so bloody embarrassed !

I think I've just become notorious . Long story short , we live in the sticks . Our neighbours have chickens , and every so often we get rats in our stable yard , which the dogs tend to despatch with great glee . I've just been outside doing the mucking out , when one which was hiding in the straw has suddenly made a run for it . Trouble is it's run across my feet , on which I have trainers because it's so hot, instead of my usual yard boots, and a pair of socks . The buggers only got its claws caught in the fabric loop in my sock. I hate rats . I mean really hate them , so I scream like a banshee , simultaneously flailing my fork at my foot which I am frantically shaking about to detach the thing , screaming " get off me you bastard " and "I could do with some help ....... " aimed at the three teenagers sitting indoors at about 200 decibels . The hounds come running out just as I manage to fling the bugger off my foot with all the vigour of an Olympic discus thrower , and promptly kill it . I then decide to go and have a cup of tea to get over the shock .

5 minutes later not one , but 3 police cars screech to a halt on the drive . It seems my neighbours , who can't see into our yard because of a huge hedge , have heard me yelling , and thought I was being attacked , and called 999 . Bless their hearts . I then had to explain to 3 rather large policeman why I was yelling , as they politely and quite rightly insisted on checking the house just in case . I ended up showing them the mangled rat remains as well ! I'm going to go next door and thank them for keeping an eye and ear on us , but thank goodness my other neighbour wasn't home - he'd have turned up with a shotgun!

I'm so embarrassed .....

Ive been on MN for about seven years now and honestly this is the first time I have actually laughed out loud at your post !

Embarrassed ? No I would be feeling absolutely fantastic ! I hate hate hate rats with a passion and you have managed to deal with this one in the most traumatic situation. I think I would be scarred for life - but not embarrassed !

I just don't get why the neighbours didn't shout 'Are you OK ? ' first though, I would have done.

Sit down and get yourself a cup of tea - no get those three teenagers to do that and then finish the stable off for you !

That is such a great story though!!!! Ugh poor you. I once had a rat jump on my back when I was searching for something in my shed.....it was SO horrible! My friend's dog unwittingly called 999 so you are not the only one!

Ha ha!

I once had a rat run over my sandalled foot and it was just horrible. One of the family pack of terriers despatched it. Thank god for dogs. I actually do think they're the most humane form of vermin control--it's over very quickly when a terrier pounces on you and shakes you: seconds, instead of hours or days if you're poisoned.

Fantastic service from the police there. I'd think about writing to say so, keeps them happy in case you need them again.

Brilliant! This has just made me properly lol Grin

You have ace neighbours (although it wouldn't have hurt them to yell over the hedge before rushing off to call 999!) and a very quick responding police force!

Enjoy your Brew , hopefully made for you by one of your teenagers!

Amazing post - you are my hero!
I'm moving to the sticks soon, now terrified of rats, will make sure I wear my big boots every time I even think about leaving the house!

I can't imagine what I looked like .... A whirling dervish probably ! Doing my best to stab myself in the foot whilst on one leg , bawling like a fishwife .... Can you imagine trying to explain that one in A and E if I'd managed it ?

I popped round to my lovely neighbours just to let them know all is well ( bless them they're in their eighties , but always help out the boys if they get stuck , even feeding DS3 when we'd had a miscommunication over school collection , he'd forgotten he was supposed to be staying late and went home , having left his phone indoors , only to find himself locked out in freezing weather , whilst I was sat in the school car park miles away waiting for him . Came home to find him sat in their living room eating egg and bacon with a large cuppa ! )

Anyway I digress . Popped round to say thanks - apparently all they could hear was thump thump , get off me you bastard , thump thump help . The DH wanted to come round with a shovel , but has trouble with his mobility so decided would be faster to call 999 ! We are seriously fortunate where we live .

Ugh rats, but what lovely neighbours and terrific quick response from the police. I have a strange image in my head of your 80 year old neighbour marching round with a shovel Grin.

It's nice to know they have your best interests at heart.
