AIBU?

to complain about this doctor?

I had a c-sec 3 weeks ago. Today i noticed it had opened slightly, called surgery, no appointments but they called me back and said come in, a doctor will see you. So far so good. Went in, the doctor had a look couldn't tell me if it was infected or not (said gynaecology was not his 'thing') but prescribed me antibiotics anyway. Fine by me as cannot afford to get ill with 3 small dcs. I had been in there about 3 mins max, and i said as i am here could i have a repeat prescription for my pill (was planning to make an appt this week to get it anyway but rarely would you ever get an appt for sooner than 2 weeks away) he told me that because of me he wasn't having a lunch hour and so no he wouldn't. I was gobsmacked by his rudeness and said ok well i would have preferred you hadn't seen me if it put you out that much and he repeated the same thing about his lunch hour. I do get that for 'emergency' appts they might have that policy and i would have been a bit disappointed if he'd told me that but i would have been fine, but i think this was whole extra level of bloody rude! I've had this doc once before when i went for advice about PND and he completely brushed over what i said and asked for my opinion on the new colour of the waiting room. Would i BU to complain or am i being over dramatic?

He was rude but I am surprised you asked him for a repeat prescription. Sounds like he was thrown by this therefore was blunt and honest in his reply.

A repeat contraceptive prescription may have attracted a longer exam (weight, blood pressure, health survey) so perhaps he didn't actually have the time for that?

Actually , I take what I says back on rereading your post. You saw a gp and for some reason I assumed you'd seen a doctor in the hospital. Therefore you were nbu.

I wouldn't complain though.

Hmm I wouldn't complain - if he really was missing his lunch as worried about your urgent concern, although he shouldn't have been rude I might have been more grateful. My GP has little cards they give out for urgent appts saying you can only mention one issue at a time. Big picture? He could have made you go to a and e, he put himself out to check you were ok.

I imagine each appointment is booked in ten min blocks or similar and if they knew you needed other issues looked at then would have given you a longer slot?

It's a good point that a pp made, it wouldn't have been as simple as writing a prescription given that you only recently gave birth.

I don't think you can really complain.

Umm. Emergency appointment for an emergency in his lunch hour. I'd say that's good service. You were cheeky to ask for anything extra. The gp probably had other emergencies to see, paperwork to do and his lunch to eat, phone calls to make etc etc.

I think you're being a bit U. Monday mornings are HELL on earth for most GPs (I'm a practice manager) and he probably had a good few more extras to see as well as you.
Pill checks take time and you'd definitely need a full appointment to do this (and often this can be done by a nurse anyway).

There was no time for your repeat prescription, and it isn't something to bring up during an emergency appointment. So sorry Yabu. He was blunt due to being overworked.

He shouldn't have been rude but he sounds a bit lacking if he doesn't know if you have a wound infection, nothing to do with gynaecology, just basic surgical knowledge. Duty doctor sessions can be horrible and very stressful especially on a Monday though. I've got tomorrow morning and Wednesday afternoon as duty doctor this week. Here's hoping it's not too bad.

Oh god, mine's the same. Went in with DTs once at about 18m, both coldy, but DT1 pulling her ear and crying. Appt was for DT1. Ear infection gets diagnosed, I ask him to check other DT - no, I have to make a separate appt. Fine, whatever, see you tomorrow where we will be taking up another emergency appt.

I don't think YABU at all. You asked. He could have said, 'Sorry, that'll take a bit of time that we don't have right now. Please make an appointment to come back and see me.' Politeness costs nothing!

crikey, that's ridiculous too much! 30 seconds to look in LOs ear fgs!

Yes, there is never any need for anyone to be rude to others.

I personally can't stand when people say nothing and then complain but it seemed you were frank with him and as he didn't retract his ridiculous comment it is only fair that you flag his behaviour to the practice manager. Hopefully he will take from it that being rude leaves no one better off.

  • If he was stressed/hungry I totally understand his despair but in all honesty, treating you with respect as opposed to what he did would have probably made his own day more bearable. Snapping at you didn't get him more of a break or the sense of a full stomach!

Hope it goes well :-)

I don't work in the medical field, but I would NEVER say to anyone 'I can't do that or I won't get a lunch break'! That's so unprofessional.

He should have just said they had to stick very strictly to time on emergency appointments, sorry, and please make another one for the other issue.

But there's a human aspect to this - doesn't he get cut any slack for not just saying he couldn't see op and telling her to go to a and e? They had no appts...he was a bit rude bit he actually saved her a long wait in a and e...

I think YANBU to be annoyed about 'gynae not being his thing' - I mean really? Confused My practice nurse is not a consultant urologist but oddly enough, she has seen wounds before!

I think also YANBU to ask nicely about the pill but YABU to be annoyed he said no. He did give up his lunch hour and didn't need to. I agree though that he might have just said 'Sorry, this an emergency appt and as that's not an emergency, I'm afraid you'll need to make another appt'.

I wouldn't complain.

I've missed why he would have told her to go to A+E?

Report
RevoltingPeasant · 07/07/2014 15:50

Sorry that first bit made no sense. She is not a consultant urologist but she has seen wounds before so was able to tell me that my kidney surgery wounds were not infected but just reacting to the dressing.

It wasn't even a proper emergency appt. she was first told they had no appts. Seeing people in lunch hours can't be part of their normal structure therefore not a part of his agreed workload. So he could have said to go to a and e if that urgent as my drs does when they have run out of emergency appts.

Report
Gen35 · 07/07/2014 15:54

Ps I should say, I generally loathe patronising drs and especially rude ones, which was why I clicked in the thread but I just thought he'd actually gone above and beyond to see you at lunchtime.

YWBU to ask for a repeat prescription in an emergency appointment, but I can understand why this guy irked you. He can't tell if a surgical wound is infected because 'gynaecology's not his thing'? What a weird thing to say! It's not like it's in your fanjo, is it?

Sounds like he doesn't have much time for 'women's problems'.

Agree gen. He was fairly rude but that's outshone by him going above and beyond.

And people DO deserve protected time for lunch! Even if it's just a sandwich in front of the computer and a look at the cricket scores for 10 minutes.

'Seeing people in lunch hours can't be part of their normal structure therefore not a part of his agreed workload'.

Who here works only their 'agreed workload' and doesn't put in extra hours? I can't remember the last time I took a full lunch break or left on time.

I'd be annoyed about the 'il give you antibiotics just incase' route, surely it's his job to know if it's infected/ get you to go to someone who does?

Equally, at my docs a repeat prescription is literally ticking a box on a computer, pushing print and signing- so I would have been annoyed at the abruptness of that, however, if you needed your bp checking/ complications with the csec wound infection that could affect the pill id have understood him saying you need another appt- but that doesn't have to be done in such a rude manner :/
