AIBU?

To hate the troll hunting culture these days?

Every thread that has something:

  • Slightly peculiar
  • Sexual
  • a bit far fetched

Automatically are assumed to be a troll. Now perhaps they are but perhaps it is a bizarre or risqué topic. This is more so if the thread is by an established poster.

If you think it's a troll thread then I don't see why not just report it though I am sure hq are bored of being inundated with cries of troll and they will check it out.

Equally unless the thread is violent, perverse or slanderous even if a poster called ICrapToast posts about pooping lumps of poop I can't see how it is harming anyone.

Posting accusations of troll or snidely comments won't delete the troll faster nor will it make the troll think if they actually are a troll.

It seems it's every other thread troll is being shouted at.

I have upmost sympathy if someone is taken in but the majority aren't offensive.

AIBU?

Yes!

It's an internet forum. I don't think we can expect the utmost honesty from any of its members. Nor can I be bothered to care if someone is telling the truth or not.

I treat most threads as though the truth is being told. If they are really that desperate to pine for attention on the internet, they probably need it.

Even if it's not trolly, posters present themselves in the best light possible, omitting facts, not telling the crap they've put the other person through. They're not being honest in how saintly they are and did nothing wrong to this "mean person". Not that people being mean aren't mean for no reason mind you, but generally I'm sure you can maybe figure out where it started before one person decided to take it too far.

The thing about reporting is, MNHQ don't have a magic crystal ball.

So if for example I fancied doing a bit of trolling, I could NC and claim I've just shat on the chip shop floor.

But unless they pop down to my local Harry Ramsdens, how could they possibly know whether I'm trolling or telling the truth?

So it's understandable that some people will call bull shit (no pun intended), if other people on the thread are taking it all seriously.

I agree troll hunting is wrong, but sometimes people can't help stating the glaringly obvious. It's human nature.

This will always be the same unless MNHQ does something about members abusing the name change function.

It's there to protect anonymity...not for people to troll, attention seek or start controversial threads that they're too scared to start under their regular names, in case it makes them 'unpopular'.

I agree Worra. I think it's more those who don't just state they don't believe the poster or warn others to be careful but keep the onslaught going.

I just feel if it's fake report/ ignore/ see what happens and perhaps post something non goady to warn others but I don't think it helps to exchange insults with a suspected troll.

Yes I hate it too. I've seen some awful treatment of new posters in the name of troll hunting.

Well I am awfully surprised people all across the boards don't know me.

How insulting!

YABU

There are trolls all over the place getting a warm welcome and tons of attention. It's the troll culture that hacks me off. It's pointless saying if you don't like it just report and ignore, that's not how communications work on internet forums.

If it was, then you could just blithely ignore the troll hunters, but you didn't, you were moved to post about them.

Are you the poo troll?

Report
lettertoherms · 28/06/2014 23:58

It's really unnecessary. We're not under oath here. It's an anonymous internet forum. Sometimes posters need to change details, slightly exaggerate points, whatever, because they're going through something and trying to deal with it.

Trolling, as I see it, has an intent to harm, whether through upsetting posters/causing a bunfight intentionally/using them for self-gratification, or scamming them.

Just misrepresenting yourself on the internet isn't trolling in itself. I can say my name is Fanny Bumbleshoot if I want. What is far more harmful than someone being untruthful for innocuous reasons, is posters jumping in, tearing them apart, goading them, calling them a horrible troll, and derailing a thread that was started for reasons which were sincere to the OP.

Report, and let the thread die out of active convos if you think it's a troll. Don't engage.

YANBU. I posted about a very embarrassing issue and had people take the piss from the off. My doctor was less than helpful so I thought I'd ask advice here, I was accused of being a middle aged man wanking in a basement....

I understand expecting more from mumsnet than other forums because I do myself but go on any other forum and see what you get. Complaining about the posters here just sounds naive and like you don't know your born tbh. How do the complainers survive out in the wider web?

Thread police/troll hunters are your typical school 'perfect' prefect types, head up their arse and an inflated sense of self-importance.

Report
Custardo · 29/06/2014 00:06

i think that advice given - even to trolls is useful advice that some other posters could be readind and therefore all is not lost

i think people call troll becuase they like the drama - which one does not get by simply pressing the rport button
