AIBU?

To advise best friend to report this? Don't know if it's suspicious.

My friend moved onto an estate in March... He lives in a cul-de-sac and doesn't really know any one. His road opening is facing a row of shops. Anyhow, I have stayed the past few nights and I have noticed a car parked outside the local mini supermarket each time, well beyond 8pm when the store shuts. The store is over the road but directly facing my friend's road opening. The first night I noticed it we were giving his dogs a toilet opportunity near to said car as there is a green there too. I had a brief look around the car and there were no signs of life, no damage like a flat tyre that might cause someone to temporarily abandon it, nothing suspicioius-looking etc.

The next moring, very early (I don't sleep well due to ahealth condition) I did see two separate vehicles parked across it (a white van with ladders, then a black hatchack...looked like a man in the van but apart from that I didn't see any people or comings or goings, any signs of activity etc), one after the other around 6.30am. It disppeared shortly after although I didn't see it leave... I thought it was probably an engine issue and the van and car had been to look at it/ attempt to fix it for the owner.

Fast forward to that evening and it was back although neither my friend nor I saw it arrive. It was still there early morning but had disappeared again later on.

It did it again last night/ this morning.

I don't know if I'm just being nosey but it doesn't seem normal. There are no houses nearby (well, there are but it's backs of houses...fences out to road). I have wondered if somehow the car is watching my friend's road... or if someone is casing the supermarket... (there is a cash machine on the other side of the building).

It's three nights this car has been parking there at night and going in the morning (same position, facing shops, all shops in darkness and shuttered and no other vehicles around). I think I'll be going home tonight so I won't know if car will do its usual but I think my friend should report it. There is one of those public-type cameras in that area (looks like a black ball on a tall post) but I don't know if the car is in its sights. I think my friend should report it to some one just in case it's dodgy. It is not a bad area but there was been crime, more so in the past... I told friend he should ask for the manager of the mini supermarket and at least tell him but my friend is reluctant and thinks they'll think he's mad.

AIBU to worry about it and to advise friend to report? And, who to?

Thanks

Sounds to me as though the van driver is parking outside the shops because he can't park it outside his own house (or doesn't want to upset any MNers in the vicinity of his house).

You want to report a car being parked in a public road? Seriously?

Report
giantpurplepeopleeater · 28/06/2014 19:51

I'm not sure what it is you are worried about?

Sounds to me like someone is using the area as extra parking.

Tweasels · 28/06/2014 19:52

It doesn't sound that suspicious to me. I'm not sure what you'd actually be reporting? If the car is taxed, parked legally, not been abandoned - what do you think is suspicious?

It's not a van, Optimist1, it's a car. The van was an additional vehicle the morning after my friend and I first noticed the car. The van parked across the back of the car. It's a normal hatchback car that's parking there every night. Friend just looked and it's there again, ten mins before shop is due to close... But, it obviously ddoesn't pick anyone up. It parks in the exact same location each night and stays till morning (based on last three nights anyway).

Maybe it belongs to someone who lives nearby or is visiting someone. I can't imagine where you live that you think a parked car is worthy of a report. And to whom?

Canus · 28/06/2014 19:57

Well, the owner has found a nice, free, perfectly legal parking space, and is bothering no one.

Are you often subject to paranoia OP?

I'd call MI5 and the police. No, wait sorry just realised you said it's a car parking on a road. My bad. Hmm

Not suspicious at all.

If there was a person in it looking about at people's houses, that might raise an eyebrow. How can a parked car with no one in it be 'watching your friend's road'? Hmm

Hmmm... maybe I'm being OTT. It just seems an odd place to park.
I had wondered if it could be the local council checking out my friend's rented place -as it only really looks on to his road - as he's had a visitor looking for the previous tenant who has scarpered leaving a lot of debt (one of the downsides of renting, I suppose). Also, the house facing my friend's has lots of visitors most days, cars only staying briefly...although I think this car couldn't see that property as the road bends.
I also wondered if the supermarket was going to be targeted (I have a very vivid imagination and am suspicious by nature...maybe because I've been a victim of crime once or twice). My friend doesn't really like the area and will likely move when the tenancy is up.
I'm probably just paranoid...

I don't know what to say.

Is there someone sat in it? If not I would say not suspicious as probably someone lives in a road where it fills up with parking before they get home so this is their nearest spot and most convenient place to leave from in the morning rather than revving the engine at 6.30 outside someone's window, or are there flats above the shops?

What makes you think that the person isn't just parking it there?

LeoandBoosmum · 28/06/2014 20:02

YouTheCat... I think they can put cameras in cars targeting on areas of interest. I read it somewhere but it might be BS. I think maybe I am paranoid. I am a born worrier... :)

OP I've got to ask- are you really considering calling the police and telling them a car is parked outside your friends house at night? Would you not be embarrassed to explain all that to the police? Im cringing just thinking about it

Why do you think that parking a car overnight and driving away again in the morning is suspicious? I can't see anything dodgy or suspicious with what you've posted? Confused

Report
gamerchick · 28/06/2014 20:05

Yes you do have a vivid imagination.

Obviously somebody is using it for parking and nothing more.

HecatePropylaea... I visit friend a lot and have never seen it before, then it's there every night (well, for three nights anyway). Just seems an odd place to park. It is a car park in front of a supermarket that's closed... The two different vehicles parked rright across its rear within minutes of each other really early in the morning seemed v odd... The shops weren't even open...those two vehicles went but the original car stayed until someone must have come for it (gone by 9.30am)... Just seems odd but I will admit I am pretty paranoid.

Serenity: no, I wan't going to bother the police. I was thinking maybe Neighbourhood Watch or suggesting friend mentions it to the manager of the store, that's all.

I'd be more worried about this. Sound like dealers if you ask me.

Mandarin: I read somewhere cameras can be put in cars.
Anyhow, I'm not really sure...maybe I am paranoid. It's more of a gut thing, not that my gut's always right. It's just unusual (you'd have to know the area, I suppose, it's like its own little estate...not a village but one road in and one out, lots of little roads and cul-de-sacs and people who mostly have money and garages and drives and generally wouldn't have to park in front of the local shops. Plus, to the other person who mentioned disturning neighbours: they can't have left until 9.30am yesterday...so I can't see that being an issue.
Maybe I'm just a worrier... My mum always says if I had nothing to worry about I'd create something... :)
