I had the mirena fitted about 1 year ago after birth of dc2. I'm still breastfeeding so think this has helped fend of periods but over the last 3 months I've had breakthrough bleeding every 10 days ish, this matches with me having a horrid temper or wanting to to cry all the time, which is totally unlike me. Everything else n life good so don't really understand these random mood swings. Anyone else had a similar experience?

There are at least 1000 threads on Mumsnet about the Mirena and how it ballses up everyone's moods.

You are not alone, but maybe a tiny bit U for not doing a search first.

I have no experience of this but there was a very funny thread on here about re-naming it the BASTARD MIRENA, so i think you may not be alone.

I had it out after 6 months. 'Twas awful. Bled constantly.

Not true. Like any hormone contraceptive, it doesn't suit all. I never found a pill that suited.

So glad I now have the Mirena, it's the only thing that hasn't ballsed up my moods. Clearly it suits enough people otherwise the company wouldn't keep making them and they wouldn't be financed on the NHS

I think it's the best thing since sliced bread, no periods, no side effects, just had mine replaced as the 5 years was up.

I think the stats say 10-20% have a bad reaction and everyone else is pretty ok. I've had mine nearly 2 years and love it, it's great for me, no side effects at all.

I remember someone on here saying about having a conversation with their doctor about how they thought they had mood swings because of it. The doctor said it wasn't possible as the hormone only acted locally. The woman said how come there are warnings it can be found in breast milk then? The doctor agreed to take it out after that, I think!

It took a little while for my periods/ breakthrough bleeding to stop - i was also breastfeeding, i wonder if that confuses the hormone flow? Once it settled its been great - some time after I stopped feeding DD so no obvious link. Rarely any breakthrough bleeding (today I brought my first pack of ultra thin panty liners in three years I use them so rarely). I don't suffer from excessive bloating, ravenous hunger or moodiness on a cycle like historically.

Not everyone's moods, ROAR. I could be a salesperson for the thing. I went from having horrendous, life stopping periods (Super plus tampons+pads lasting for only a couple of hours - no possibility of doing anything, could barely even work) to no/tiny periods. My life has been changed. I om on my 3rd and have noticed no difference in my moods - and it would be worth it even if it did make me cry a bit! Horses (and contraception) for courses, innit?

I know from reading on here that lots of people have had bad experiences with the Mirena, but personally I have had no problems with it whatsoever. No side effects, no mood swings & no periods, so I've been very happy with it.

I had one for 5 years, then had it replaced with another about 2 years ago.

It is the only contraceptive that agrees with me, no mood swings, no periods, no break through bleeding or other side effects. I do have high levels of testosterone for a female, so might that be significant?

I HATED the mirena. I bled almost every day for 6 months, then had 10-14 day long periods every 3 weeks for another 6 months until I realised it was never going to get better and had it removed. My GP told me that if things haven't improved after 6 months they never will, and warned me never to try the injection either as apparently if you don't get on with the mirena you won't get on with that either. I also developed horrendous acne and the stupid thing got lost briefly and I had to go for a scan. I'm now on Yasmin and things are much, much better Smile

Yeah, but the problem is with all the mn threads on any birth control is that they're full of negative experiences. The people that are doing well on them aren't searching out topics about it, so it's a skewed perspective. With million user per day hit on mn, I think it'd be pretty easy to fill a thread even if it was the minority.

Every thread I've found about my bc has tons of people talking about how terrible it is. But it works great for me.

I zoned out an thought the world wasn't real when on the mirena. It really messed me up.

Moods were fine, made me put on 3 and half stone. I had it taken out and my weight has stopped climbing up and I have even dropped 3 puns without even trying.

IT IS EVIL!!
