Just how strict are ryanair with hand luggage?

I have a rucksack which I bought from ebay that said it was the right measurements for Ryanair but now I have measured it with everything stuffed in and it seems slightly bigger?! Would it be okay if I print off proof where I got the bag from saying Ryanair approved?

You should be absolutely fine. I bought a similar hand luggage from e bay saying Ryanair approved. I stuffed it to the hilt and got in fine.

They have relaxed in the last few months. You can carry on hand luggae as well as a handbag!

Not sure if they still weigh luggage before you board.

I saw them make someone pay at the gate when the suitcase was the right size apart from the handle and wheels. The flight was full though. Can you take anything out and put it in your coat pockets etc?

They are really strict - they will make you squash it into a rack to check the dimensions. It should be ok if the contents of your bag are squashable, or can you wear a couple of the things in your bag to get on the plane?

When I flew Ryanair Manchester to Rome I spent money on the rucksack that fit in the guidelines and was very strict with what I took only to turn up at the airport and every other person had massive cases that were well above the size limit. The flight was about 90% full so I don't know if that affects anything. Probably depends when and where you fly and how narked off the ground crew are.

Ryanair won't care if the Queen herself approved it. They are nit-picking money grubbing bastards who are not there to be reasoned with. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses guys! I am going to wear a few layers so my bag will squash down a bit. I just really don't want to get charged anything! The weight is only 7kg and is allowed 10..so would hate to get charged on size!

Last time I few they were very rigid, we had to weigh our packs.

It all depends on who is there on the day. You may well get away with it but this is one way they make up the money on their cheap fares - the extras - and if you have a jobs worth - you will get charged.

No idea how Ryan Air operate but I do know that staff in other airline companies are on commission and bonuses for extras sold.

To be on the safe side - layer up and fill your pockets.

Much less strict than they used to be! I've flown with them a couple of times in the past 3-4 months and they barely even looked at my hand luggage, let alone measured it.

They also let you carry a second bag now. It's all very different from the way things used to be, when fines for people unable to shoehorn their handbags and duty free into already full cabin bags were commonplace.

They made me pay at boarding for a bag which was 3cm too wide. It was also Ryanair approved and they'd let me out the country with it, but not back in!

Never had an issue since I started flying solo ten years ago.

Mines usually around the 15/20kg mark and it fits the old standard unextended but I usually extend it. I've just always hidden it in front of the desk at passport control and they must have assumed it was just my handbag...?

I flew with them last Saturday. Was worried they would put dd's trunki in the hold despite it being well within weight limits but they didn't bat an eyelid. In fact having always been anti Ryanair I found them really good

If they ask you to put your hand luggage in the frame thing to check put it in upside down ie if there's a top handle put that in first.

I've seen bags rejected because they won't fit the right way up but when they're inverted, fit. Try it before you get to the gate so you can do it with confidence.

They have changed their rules a bit. Their measurer thingy is a bit bigger than their stated bag dimensions (it says so on the measurer) so your rucksack will be fine. I took a bag that was about 5cm too wide and it fit in the thingy. You van also carry a smaller bag separately.

I think it depends on the airport, I fly Sweden-England quite often, I have never been checked in Sweden but in the UK ( Gatwick and standstead mostly but also Liverpool) I have always been checked.

I had a rucksack with pockets and the pockets made it slightly too big, I had baby clothes that a friend had given me in the bag and I was pregnant with ds1, they were really rude and abrupt, I was hormonal, terrified of flying and sat on the floor crying trying to fit babygrows and little woolly jumpers in my pockets.

That was the last time I flew Ryan air.

I flew out of Dublin to Lanzarote 2 weeks ago and no one weighed my luggage and I was allowed a handbag. This is new as they once insisted I put the book that I was reading into my bag to weigh it even though I would be reading it on the plane. So there has been an improvement.

I flew with them (only and last time!)

Me and DH between us had 5 carry on bags including 2 wheelie bags that have always fitted in the BA size guide but were bigger than Ryan Air allow.

We sort of just rushed passed the groundsmen (who were taking some bags off people to put in the hold)

I'm never flying with them again.

I flew with them May half term with hand luggage

4 bags, plus DH and I had a handbag type thing each, my DD2 had a fairly big teddy bear (she was nervous of flying) and DD1 was carrying a small rucksack with iPad and stuff

No problems at all. Didn't measure or weigh anything

I think you will be fine. Recently they have relaxed their rules on hand luggage due to the constant complaints they been getting from passengers.
