What am I doing wrong?

I put shoes on - and then walk around nearly falling over.

I just don't get it.

The answer lies here in How to walk in high heels!

Ha ha ha, no idea. In my 40s and still can't do it without looking like a hunchback with autonomous limbs flailing, or 5 year old playing dress up Blush

Walk straight onto the heel. People do the mistake of trying to walk with their feet landing flat or walking onto their toes. Also ,I find that heels can't be lose otherwise that mucks up your stride when it slips off and your foot doesn't land back in the shoe if that makes sense. I wear them for at least half an hour before I leave the house so my sweaty feet cling to the shoe ,lol.

you might as well ask 'how can I be comfortable in a corset?'

contradiction in terms. High heels = waddle like a duck or fall over. Neither a pretty sight.

possible to be elegant in 1 inch heels but shoes like this seem to have been outlawed.

I know - I love little, chunky safe heels - but feel ashamed as a woman that I look so bloody stupid in anything else. I usually end up taking flats in my bag and taking them off after a few minutes teetering.

I find corsets fine - just don't sit down and make sure it's laced properly. I also do not eat whilst or before wearing one. Just a shame that I can't wear shoes to match...

I am alright in heels, wear them so much that everyone will comment if I wear flats!

It does depend on the shoe anatomy...sounds ridiculous, but I've tried on shoes just with a medium heel and thought "no way!" Something about the way they are made tips your foot and weight all wrong.

Certain wedges can be evil too....no flexibility in the shoe means you end up walking like Bambi carrying a melon between your knees

So my advice is to keep trying, don't write off heels because of one dodgy pair, and for god's sake don't totter along like Babs Windsor, that was not even a good look for her.

As Standing said.

Don't try and walk with your foot flat so heel and toe hit the ground at the same time.

I have no problem walking in heels, I wear them a lot.

Not a lover of wedges, they're too rigid so I end up doing the flat foot walk above.

This thread is completely mad in a 'mainstream feminine self-presentation' kind of way. Why put so much work and thought into something that makes you so uncomfortable and stops you moving freely? (And I won't even ask why wearing a corset is 'ok' despite not being able to sit down or eat while wearing it?)

Buy some Converse.

You can have both Burren; heels AND Converse. The OP asked for advice...

Practice, practice, practice.

Sit back in your hips, don't try to stop the wiggle (they are designed to produce this) and heel first as PP have said.

it's a choice Burren the OP is wanting to wear heels and asked for help .

Converse cut my heels to absolute shreds.

Sweaty smelly trainers, no thanks!

I don't wear closed in shoes in summer, so low wedges, the odd kitten heel (though not in fashion) nothing with backs or toes so feet can breathe and I don't get blisters.

In winter, Clarks do some lovely shoes which are comfy and have a heel, not too high- I have a patent leather pair which are very nice. I don't wear above about 2 inch heel and I often have straps/dolly style- same with boots, like support and a smallish heel.

I don't find flats or even worse ballet flats comfy at all, they fall off easily, but this may be because I've worn heels for so long, I've stretched my tendons and so wearing a small heel is more comfortable. I have no bunions and can walk for miles in my shoes, so I second whoever said pick the right pair- so strappy high leather sandals would be the worst for me in this weather as they would rub, as would trainers/shoes encasing the foot.

Anything with an ankle strap is helpful.

I was rubbish in heels until a year ago when I started exercising loads, am much fitter and toned and appear to be able to walk in ridiculous heels now. Smile

Converse make my feet absolutely stink

I wear pretty much anything except toe post flip flops. I swear they are an instrument of torture!

Heels, Converse, trainers, whatever. I can walk in heels as well as I walk in Converse

Pretend you're barefoot. Walk like that. Stride then heel. I think you have to do it confidently or it looks mincey.

I still prefer wedges though.

I have no idea. I can't do it. CAN. NOT.

I've tried every type of heel and style of shoe, and I fall over sideways in all of them. It's embarrassing. I'm 41, FFS. Blush. It sucks because some clothes really do not look right without a bit of a heel, IMHO.

Maybe I'm structurally unsound (6 foot, super-skinny ankles). Grin

I can do chunky heels but have never mastered the art of stilettos, end up looking like I'm either drunk or need the loo!!

If corsets are fine long as you don't sit down, there is the answer to the heels problem - don't stand up.

Report
SinglePringle · 24/06/2014 12:01

I find heels - regularly wear over 3 inches - much easier than flats. Ballet pumps are agony.

I agree with the pp who said embrace the wiggle - it does make it easier!

So you can never wear corsets and heels at the same time!

No idea - when I was about five I bought a pair of heels from a jumble sale and used to prance up and down our relatively uneven garden path for hours on end because I liked the sound they made.

At thirty..cough..cough...something, I haven't worn heels for nearly a decade (got married in flip flops) and am convinced it would be the last thing I ever did if I attempted to get around in a pair. Clearly I am living my life backwards like Benjamin Button and will soon buy a pair of giant pram shoes and roll everywhere.
