To think I could fit in in Bradford?

At a family funeral recently, we were driving through some of the towns and countryside on the outskirts of Bradford, and I commented that the house prices in this area were very reasonable and I had been scouring rightmove for property porn could see myself living in the area. I'm originally from South Yorkshire, have spent lots of time in West Yorkshire, and my family on both sides are from West Yorkshire.

A relative replied that I might not be comfortable in Bradford, that I "wouldn't fit in", and that I should consider areas where there are more "people like me". AIBU to think that actually I could fit in fine in Bradford? I'm white, northern and gobby.

Northern and gobby is perfect for brad ford, colour is irrelevant it is a multicultural city and you can fit in where ever you choose Xx I'm a Yorkshire lass xxx

CorusKate Thu 12-Jun-14 12:58:40

I mentioned my colour because I suspect that's the part that my relative thought wouldn't fit. hmm

I'm not hmming at you, BTW, Foo; just at my relative.

I suspect you are correct Xx but west Yorkshire folk are weird Xx

If you have dc you might want to take a close look at Bradford schools. Dh grew up in Bradford and I taught there for a while including at the currently notorious Carlton Bolling. I would go for somewhere like Skipton or Saltaire if I wanted to live in the area. I'd hate to live in today's Bradford.

Fooshufflewickbannanapants Thu 12-Jun-14 13:03:07

That was a big smiley grin

CorusKate Thu 12-Jun-14 13:04:41

No DC, don't need to take work stuff into consideration.

Fooshufflewickbannanapants Thu 12-Jun-14 13:04:44

Saltaire is lovely, there are nice parts of Bradford but do you mean city centre? Xx I wouldn't live in any city centre as I'd hate it !!

What do you mean West Yorkshire folk are weird?

Dont live in the City Centre or outskirts. Be careful what postcode you choose. BD16, parts of BD18, BD20, BD22 are lovely.

But yes property is good value, but a lot of schools are awful

Migsy1 Thu 12-Jun-14 13:09:10

Don't you mean "BraTford"? ;)

It is lovely around there in the villages and countryside but the city centre is somewhat dire in spite of having lovely buildings.

CorusKate Thu 12-Jun-14 13:10:11

I wouldn't live in a city centre, no. I'm not even planning to move particularly, just really hmm at the idea that I should stay away from somewhere because I won't "fit".

In the 2011 census, it stated that 67.44% (352,317) of the city's population was White (All White ethnic groups), 2.48% (12,979) (Mixed ethnic groups), 26.83% (140,149) (All Asian Ethnic Groups), 1.77% (9,267) (All Black ethnic groups) and 1.48% (7,740) (all other ethnic groups)

Even if you allow the ridiculous and offensive premise that different races can't fit in with each other, around 2/3's of Bradford is still white, so you'd be fine.

Bradford's not a bad place at all and (and I'm sure you've already worked out) some of the housing stock is lovely.

throckenholt Thu 12-Jun-14 13:15:48

Bradford it a big place and has (like any city) lots of different parts with different characteristics. Bound to bits that you don't "fit" and others that you do.

I went to university there eons ago. It had some lovely parts then. I have fond memories of a beautiful beech woodland out on the western fringe somewhere. I hope it is still there smile

I miss bradford sad I grew up in BD4 grin im as rough as they come by that standard!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler Thu 12-Jun-14 13:23:27

Wow you could have your own little piece of history for £55k - a 4 bed back-to-back house complete with cellar grin.

The area may be shit (I wouldn't know), but I kind of like the house in some way!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler Thu 12-Jun-14 13:25:20

And, yes, of course you could "fit in" anywhere in the UK.

How can it have a rear yard and be back to back?

2014isanewyear Thu 12-Jun-14 13:34:32

Saltaire is lovely, I've lived here a few years. More about it here www.saltairevillage.info/

mistlethrush Thu 12-Jun-14 13:36:53

That's the front yard...

Property is cheap for a reason. Despite what people try to tell you, bradford is a strife ridden shit hole. Drive up Leeds road. You'll see why the motor insurance premiums are some of the highest in the country. Walk round loads of areas in the evening, blatant dealing, some places abuse. Schools - even the best aren't comparable to a lot if the country.

Whoops blush

I guess its like most Cities and Towns up north, there are good areas and bad areas. Anyone thinking of moving needs to go and spend a good deal of time in the area to get to know what its like.
I live not far from Bradford, think neighbouring town rather than part of Bradford.
Our town has some really lovely areas I would happily live in, but there are places I would not go alone at night (and I lived in one such area for a few years and hated every minute!).

Well yes. Fortunately Bradford isn't just limited to the area around Leeds Road. wink
