To ask friend not to smoke outside when my washing is hanging out?

I don't smoke, but if anyone that visits wants to they can go outside the back door. I have my washing out there at the moment and asked a friend not to smoke there and go out the front. Is that stupid? Is it likely to make it smell or will it just go up in the air?
They said ok, looked at me a bit funny and then put it out

Its a cigarette, not a bonfire, it wont affect your washing unless she is maybe stood with it wrapped around her head..

I think that was a bit unreasonable, actually. Cigarette smoke outside is not likely to affect your washing. That small amount of smoke will drift away. It's not as if she had lit a barbecue or started a bonfire.

Just to clarify, is it a neighbour or a friend visiting your home?
If it is a neighbour you cannot dictate to them where to smoke. If it is someone in your house, I think you offered suitable alternative ie outside the front door.

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to ask a friend, visiting your home, to smoke in a different place because the washing is out. Or why some of you are calling the op precious or sniggering . Yes, it might not make a difference but the op has said she was right next to the washing. I wouldn't like this.

YANBU. I'd ask the same. I can tell when my housemates have been smoking next to my washing, maybe that's because I'm a ex-smoker though and seem to smell the slightest hint of it everywhere

You are DEFINITELY not being unreasonable and I think only a smoker would think you are. Smokers have no idea how smelly cigarettes are and it would 100% make your washing smell. Someone at my work smokes and you can literally smell where he has walked through school after he has had a cigarette, it follows him like a trail.

Marrow Maybe! I was talking about this with my boss the other week, she's an ex-smoker too and supposedly so is her ex, yet she was saying that she swears that she can smell it on her daughters laundered clothes when he drops her back home after contact.

I'm not a smoker and I think the OP is BU.

Unless they were standing there, blowing the cigarette smoke directly onto the washing, a few puffs of smoke will disappear on the breeze.

There's probably more chance of it smelling of various cooking spices around dinner time, or a distant BBQ.
