WIBU to wash my car with washing up liquid?

(57 Posts)

It's quite sunny and I need something to do outside. DD has chicken pox so she can't go out (she looks like a very sore piece of bubble wrap! ) but I could keep the front door open and wash the car while she snooze in the living room. But I don't have car wash shampoo. Do you think Fairy Liquid would be ok or will I wreck the Mummy Mobile?

I used to use WUL and it seemed fine but now, once every six months, I pay a tenner for the guys at the hand car wash to do it. I don't know if they wax it or not but it looks great for a bit.

I use WUL on horses and dogs and they don't seem to suffer any ill effects. The eczema nurse seeing DD1 told me that any shampoo, bubble bath, etc is just WUL with colour and fragrance in it anyway.

Gold my mum got told not to use WUL on her dog as it stripped the natural oils from her coat. Not that the dog gave a toss but she was told it wasn't good for their hair.

To be fair I don't use any soap most of the time but when they've found to fox poo you need it. It does work well on horses' tails but they get conditioner on them straight afterwards.

Yep wul has quite high levels of salt so it's not really the best thing for your car not only is it bad for your paint but also causes rust on metal which isn't protected so when wul runs into all the little nooks and crannies on your car it's covering everything in a salt solution.

Never heard of wax preventing scratches - it's not like lacquer either... Lacquer is a clear coat of paint which is hardened and won't wash off like wax does.

It reminds me of the book Brick Lane where they had to wash their hair with WUL. It really stings when you get it in your eyes. I use it mixed with a little water for when the kids want to do bubble blowing. Would never use it on my beautiful car though or the kids' hair ;)

i worked with a girl who talked about having fairy washing up liquid for hair washign.
and i would have used it on the car absolutely, the wax is just an extra treat
