Cat food

I recently fed my cat Holly 'Felix' cat food in a pouch and now she is terribly sick. She vomited all of what she ate of it so now she will not eat or drink. Anyone else have same problem?

No, my cat likes Felix, I think of it as a quality one these days.

Poor Holly, I hope she's ok. If you can, call the vet - they may be able to advise in case she has a blockage or something.

The Litter Tray topic here has many cat experts who could advise better too.

Why don't you ask in the pet part of mumsnet? Because, what is your AIBU?

I think the best thing to do is to phone the vet for advice to get her to eat and drink.

My cat is often sick, usually because of fur balls.

She likes 'Gourmet' cat food, it's very good; not cheap but may be worth it to tempt your cat to eat again.

My cats only eat felix (fussy) and I've never had an issue. Mine are princesses when they're ill and sometimes if I hold a cup for them they'll drink out of that.

If she's not eating or drinking, or using her litter tray you need to get her to the vets asap to be checked over - I would take mine if they'd took nothing for 24 hours (that's pure instinct so I've no idea if officially there's a proper time limit). Cats can go downhill really fast when they're dehydrated.

You can check how hydrated she is by gently pinching the scruff of her neck - the longer it takes to go down the more dehydrated she is.

If you can't physically get to the vets at least phone for advice.

I've not had any problems with Felix. I avoid giving the cats Whiskas meat though as it gives them the runs.

If she's not eating and drinking anything it may not be the cat food, she may be a poorly cat. I would take her up to the vets for a check up.

Mine only eat Felix as good as it looks. Whiskas bite'n'chew made them sick every time they ate it though.

Can you tempt her with some ham/tuna/chicken/scrambled egg?

felix, whiskers, go cat etal are all chemical crack for cats. Read the ingredients. I feed kitty a mix of raw and james well(something) it costs a fortune but it is somucb better for her

Try giving her some chicken and rice, all cats love chicken but its very bland and good for upset tummies. If she still refuses you will need vets advice.

Hope she is soon better.

James Wellbeloved. Mine go crazy for that and they're very picky, usually. On Iams at the minute, they were on Burns but it was too rich for them. Shame as I love the product, my dog has been on Burns since he was a puppy.

Mine sometimes sicks up her Felix if she has had too much. I now only give her a half pack twice a day (with unlimited dry food and water)

highway that's why I added the disclaimer of 'fussy' Grin

My cats have no intention of following a high quality diet and have turned their nose up at the (fricking expensive) ones I've tried them on. I'm sure it's spite to embarrass me at the vets!

I do insist on the higher ends of the felix range that at least look like identifiable bits of meat/ fish...... They'll always have a good chomp on a moth or spider though Confused

Ahh fair enough, plain chicken and rice will get her eating, if that doesn't work then she needs to see a vet. My cat thinks she is a panther brings me fuzzy half eaten presents, yesterdays offering was a rabbits head and legs...

Roughly how long has she not been eating or drinking for?

Report
Braganza · 04/04/2014 10:47

Does she go outside? It's not unlikely that she's eaten a mouse or something else repulsive overnight, which has upset her stomach. I wouldn't worry about her being sick once as long as she is otherwise happy. Cat food is treated at very high temperature, and will be much less likely to upset her stomach than the flies, mice, pigeons etc she'll investigate outside.

Its been 24hrs since she hasnt ate or drank. I rang the vet and they suggested boiled chicken, she is interested in it but not eating it. I usually feed her on dine desire which is a top quality food with no preservatives. She is booked in to the vet in the morning.

Holly is much better thx everyone. She had food poisoning from the felix food i gave her. She was that ill i had to syringe feed her on special high energy food from the vet. My litte precious is now eating and drinking by herself now and just waiting for her to pass her first stool since her enema.

Cat probably ate something 'else' as they do, like a mouse/bird/frog !

Very unlikely from a fresh pouch of food. Could have caught a bug.

Report
honeythewitch · 07/04/2014 13:26

How do they know the food poisoning was from the Felix cat food? Was it tested? And why did the vet suspect Felix when it seems more likely to be from something else? Has there been other cases?

I am so glad Holly is recovering.

Mine usually throw up their food if they've been greedy bastards and just gobbled it too quickly. Of course she's not going to want anything straight away- she's just been sick!

Report
iggy155 · 07/04/2014 13:56

My cat adores felix but gets the runs when she has whiskers. Think it just depends on the cat. I would probably get her checked over at the vet if she keeps being sick/is off her food.
