Breaking news on BBC. Hope they send them down for a long sentence as an example to others.

Fontofnowt Fri 21-Mar-14 10:27:00

Any link Sall?
Not before time bloody barbarism still common in 2014.

Redcliff Fri 21-Mar-14 10:28:27

Amazing news - was reading about how many females treated in hospital for this and was so horrified .

princessalbert Fri 21-Mar-14 10:28:44

Good. At last.

Too late for some poor girls though. ):

Hopefully things are heading in the right direction for future generations.

good at long bloody last. the French have prosecuted far more.

we must be absolutely clear in this, no religious custom crap. it's child abuse and torture.

now let's also push for the vile living room mutilation of little boys too.

mutilation of any child should be totally illegal and those doing it should face serious charges with l

TheBody Fri 21-Mar-14 10:32:41

long jail sentances.

Fontofnowt Fri 21-Mar-14 10:34:51

Thanks!
Good news indeed.
4000 females treated in london hospitals since 2009 for this mutilation and only now the process is catching up.

I'm against MGM too, but being realistic FGM is much worse and it must be rooted out first.

mousmous Fri 21-Mar-14 10:40:11

thing is, male circumcision might be medically indicated, while fgm never is.

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 21-Mar-14 10:45:16

Word for word what thebody said.

caruthers Fri 21-Mar-14 10:48:27

The fact that this has taken this long is disgusting.

Whatever your cultural excuse is, we don't want it or condone it in this country.

That should be the message.

Including the male circumcision of babies and children without medical needs.

TheBody Fri 21-Mar-14 10:51:38

Sally no it's all mutilation and it's all wrong. if we divide the bad people rule.

wrong is wrong.

mousmous I did say living room mutilation. a child having a circumcision in hospital for medical reasons is totally different.

caramelwaffle Fri 21-Mar-14 10:52:48

Excellent news

TheBody Fri 21-Mar-14 10:53:58

no culture or religion has the dibs on child abuse. we really need to grasp this nettle and stop pussyfooting around trying to be culturally sensitive.

its torture and abuse of children no excuses.

Fontofnowt Fri 21-Mar-14 10:56:49

Fuck culture.
Sometimes we just need to do the right thing.
Banning fgm/mgm and harshly punishing the culprits is simply the right thing.

nicename Fri 21-Mar-14 10:57:03

I don't really understand what they are being convicted of - repairing an old mutilation i.e. re-stitching up or cutting away scar tissue? Poor woman, she must've been in agony.

TheBody Fri 21-Mar-14 10:59:57

it really almost unbearable thinking of the pain these children go through.

fucking barbaric.

minouminou Fri 21-Mar-14 11:00:03

I reckon it's doing a re-infibulation.

But we shouldn't speculate too much more until the facts are out.

BloominNora Fri 21-Mar-14 11:07:10

No - this is not something to celebrate (well it is, but it is not that big a deal in the scheme of things).

It was alleged that following a patient giving birth in November 2012, a doctor at the Whittington Hospital repaired female genital mutilation that had previously been performed on the woman, allegedly carrying out female genital mutilation himself.

I'll celebrate when someone gets prosecuted for doing this to a CHILD because then it will show that we are taking it seriously and bollocks to the culture argument - this is a doctor who went too far in surgery on an adult.

It must be wonderful for the woman involved but it is absolutely not a victory for the fight against FGM, not matter how the CPS try to dress it up to get people off their backs about the issue.

I am as strongly against maleGM as you are, and have said so in other threads. But please don't let us divert attention from this important step announced today. Stopping FGM will be an important step towards stopping MGM which will meet much more resistance.

Sallyingforth Fri 21-Mar-14 11:14:44

Nora Yes there is more detail now. The original newsflash didn't mention the specific cases.

LondonForTheWeekend Fri 21-Mar-14 11:14:50

Afraid to google- what is a re-infibulation

Sallyingforth Fri 21-Mar-14 11:19:00

London you should read this:
