AIBU?

To still feed baby jars (albeit organic)

My dd is nearly 1 -for her lunch or tea i often give her a jar of organic baby food.
I have true baby led weaning and it was a messy nightmare! Mashed up food is soooo much easier to spoon feed her. She only has two teeth too.
I feel incredibly guilty though! She does have toast and lotsa fruity snacks that she feeds herself. Plus i often blend my tea and give her that for her last meal of the day.
I am trying to get rid of jars altogether, but the thought of gettin rid of mashin up her meals and feeding her terrifies me as i know it will get real messy and she will throw half of it and be starving two mins later. If I feed her i am ensuring she is getting enough.
AIBU to still be spoon feeding her now? As I say it is not all the time and she does feed herself snack and bread etc

nope. babyled weaning is only one way to do it. mashing up your own meals will give her a wider variety possibly. watch out for salt though...(presuming you are not pureeing bigmacs)

If people didn't use baby jars they wouldn't exist.

I used jars. They weren't even organic. DS appears to have coped.

Surely jar food is expensive? That would have been my primary concern at that age. I'm sure there are no issues with it re nutrition though. What's your particular worry, mess at mealtimes?

Have you got a stick blender? You could easily blend regular meals with one of those, and keep on with your strategy of some spoon fed meals, and finger feeding with mess-free foods.

It's been a loooong time since I had a one year old though so I'm out of touch with what's appropriate, but what you're doing doesn't sound outrageous.

I have no issue with jars but at nearly 1 I would be trying to get rid of the need for most things to be mashed at all tbh.

I would try maybe giving her why you have mashed and a spoon and ten you also having spoon. Also try to mash less and less over a period of time because it may help get baby used to finger foods and different tastes and food. I also have a finger food side dish ie garlic bread carrots etc. We tried to have a picnic lunch so it meant he would get enough food in food in the evening and though snacks

Jings you don't need to be blending food for a child that age.

Jars are fine but not for a 1 year old! You can't refuse to give her proper food just because she might make a mess - that's really slack.

I used jars too. By 10 months DS was eating a mixture of finger food and the 10 month lumpy jars. I didn't know how to cook back then so decided to learn at by 1 year he was having the food that we ate. Not mashed. Just cut up.

The science are you beig deliberately obtuse? If you read my post i clearly state that I give her my food mashed a little to PlUS plenty of finger foods ie snacks and fruit. I give her a jar at lunch though to ensure she is gettin enough good as she tends to throw her sandwiches rather than eat them! So I am worried about giving up the spoon feeding as she doesn't eat lots herself (and the mess too) but the mess is not the primary problem. Why do people on her have to be so ridiculous? I dont mind you having a pop where its due, but read my fecking post 1st and get your facts right first! Thanks to all the other women go bothered to answer reasonably!

Ps i blend/ mash her food and give her finger foods. I'll get rid of the jars altogether now though. Cheaper!

To be fair you did say that so people the post was read and your comment responded to!

You can still help with eating with less mashed up or "normal" foods anyway. You can't keep on mashing things forever.

I know plenty of people who spoon feed their 2yr olds. Don't worry YANBU.

well you can't get upset when your first comment on why you feed that way is because of the mess and you not liking the thought of it so people respond to what you have said!

sounds fine to me op. mind you not sure myself if all organic labels should just read 'you will pay more label'to feel better.

now nicer weather is coming you can feed her outside too so mess just on the grass. Grin

Jesus all this nit - picking at people's posts is a tad pathetic. I would understand if it was due, but to misread what I say then make snidey comments is ridiculous. I am ony saying as user this a lot on here. Ladies calm down and go be bitchy elsewhere :)

DS is 3 now and he feeds himself but he occasionally needs my help with things like peas. The little buggers get all in the carpet and only one manages to go in his mouth. So I don't mind helping him because he loves them, but I still get him to try himself so he can practise. YANBU to help with spoon feeding a 1 year old. But I think you can say goodbye to the jars like you said.

Our 15mo doesn't drop food or throw it around. She eats it or plays with it on her highchair tray. We've never done jars or spoonfed her. She has just taught herself how to use a spoon and fork. Just to give you food for thought, do what you like, but giving babies food to feed themselves doesn't have to be messy, they have to learn to feed themselves sometime - will you be spoonfeeding at 5?

People aren't looking for arguments, just making comments based on what is posted because that is all that people have to go off!

Sorry, but I've always viewed jars a bit like fast food- fine occasionally but not something i'd want them eating everyday.

I can't see any need for a one year old to be eating a ready-made jar tbh. Just give them what you eat all cut up.

Report
Sirzy · 15/03/2014 15:32

As I said before you started getting arsey at 1 I wouldn't be giving anything mashed up, help feed yes if you have to but I wouldn't mash things up. Children need to learn to eat "proper" food so unless there are other issues by 1 they should generally be able to.
