To think that beauticians should not be employed if they are smokers?

Im a regular customer in the beauty salons.

However wherever i go, beauticians always seem to be smokers.

This results in me smelling really strong stale cigarettes on fingers when im having a facial or eyebrow wax etc.

Even if they wash their hands, smoke smell still remains under their finger nails etc.

Aibu to think that as beauticians touch peoples skin then they should not be employed if they are a smoker?

Sounds a bit harsh but I have had a brow wax from someone who obviously smoked nd it was horrible!

My optician is a smoker and she honks to high heaven when she gets up close and personal (as you do in that situation).

Unfortunately you can't make that kind of statement but as a non smoker I fully empathise!

I'm a nurse and wonder what my patients think of the nurses that smoke- THEY STINK!!!!

The thought of someone's disgusting smokey breath and clothes right up in my face makes me queasy.

Need advice, I do a similar upcloseandpersonal job and am v conscious of food/breath/body odour smells on myself (less so on others in a work setting, obviously!).

Can you request a non-smoker/social smoker only when you book the appointment? At least you would get someone who hasn't just come off a fag break.

I had a nursing colleague who adored garlic . She reeked of it every day.
Awful for patients who were feeling nauseous in particular.
So anyone who is in a job that has close contact should bear smell in mind.
Including coffee or tuna breath ! That can be rectified with teeth clean thankfully unlike smoke or garlic .

YANBU. I completely agree. I think it should be the same for nurses too mind, and other jobs where you have to get up close and personal! Obviously it is never going to happen, but if it did then perhaps it could stamp down on the amount of people who smoke. We can dream though :D

I agree that this must be really unpleasant but I don't think you could insist on something like this while smoking is legal.

Where would the list of jobs that required you to get close to other people end? If no beauticians then no nurses then no physios then no teachers then no therapist then no dentists and so on and so forth. It just couldn't work.

YABU smoking is legal. Yes it's unpleasant but then so is farting or smokey bacon crisp smell. You can't refuse to employ people due to a smelly habit.

Umm, yes you can. In fact as far as I can tell you can refuse to employ people for pretty much any reason except those excluded in law i.e. an employer may not descriminate on grounds of age, race, sex, marriage, disability, sexual orientation or religion or belief.

Complain. I did this once after booking a massage and getting someone who was clearly a smoker. I have honest feedback... The massage had been very competent but I wouldn't be booking there again unless I could be guaranteed a non smoker. Would have said the same if it'd been a farter or someone who'd clearly just downed a bag of smoky bacon crisps and not cleaned their teeth

I guess part of the problem is that many smokers really don't realise that they smell of smoke. Or they suck a mint and think they've sorted it

The person might carry on doing that job,but you can certainly take your custom elsewhere

Burnt the difference is in your examples, everybody eats and what people eat is up to them. Not everybody smokes. And people who choose not to smoke do not want to then be close to, or have smokers fingers in our faces. Farting is a natural process that everyone does, smoking isn't.

When I saw your op I thought you were definitely BU but I have very little experience of going to see a beautician. Having read the full post I totally agree with you. I loathe the smell of smoke and the thought of having someone that close to me giving me a facial or whatever and transferring that smell to me is really horrible.

I think when you're shelling out ££ for a beauty treatment, something where you're paying for the experience really, a smoker's breath would just ruin the ambience.

yeuk op I would hate that. if they all do smoke change your salon.

salon treats are too few and fat between for me to put up with that. I would change but let them know why as they should be aware.

I was a nurse and hated working with the smokers. trouble is they think if the brush their teeth that's enough but it still smells as do the clothes and hair.

if people realised they smelt they would give up.
