Wibu to send ds as Spider-Man for World Book Day?

Seems we missed the letter stating that they'd be dressing up (as usual), I check his bookbag everyday but we had no letter. Apparently it contained lots of cheap ideas.

Found out today they're dressing up on Thursday.

Which leaves me tomorrow to sort something out, and I'm at work tomorrow.

Ds has various character costumes but technically non from books.

He has no striped Dennis the Menace/Where's Wally type tshirts.

What do we do?

My 2 are going as Raphael from the Ninja Turtles and Wolverine. And taking in their Turtles and Marvel annuals. Cheating a little bit, but Spiderman IS a comic BOOK character.

Ds2 is going as Mickey Mouse, technically a cartoon character but we have a couple of books of Mickey Mouse stories, so it will do! YANBU!

Yanbu as my ds is also going as spiderman. It's the only costume he will put on!

How old is he? Just last year nearly every boy in the nursery and reception classes was some form of superhero/comicbook character and every single girl wore a Disney princess dress.

FFS. There are about a million really easy book characters that any child who normally wears clothes can easily dress up as: Harry (from Harry and the bucket of dinosaurs or whatever it's called)- jumper and jeans and plastic dinosaur in pocket; Horrid Henry (jumper, jeans, scruff up hair a bit); the smartest giant in town (Old large shirt, scarf maybe, sandals if warm enough wherever you are); one of Katie Morag's big boy cousins (normal clothes, maybe make fake red hair out of paper if you have 5 minutes); Charlie from Charlie and Lola (write Charlie on old shirt, otherwise normal clothes), etc. If older anyone from Harry Potter (fake glasses or wand or whatever out of cardboard); any kid from a wartime set book (Carrie's War (e.g. her brother), Goodnight Mr Tom, Warhorse, etc etc) with shorts and old shirt and satchel or not even bother with satchel; Will (Lyra's friend) from those Philip Pullman books (normal clothes).

This is not hard if you actually read books with your child. Library trip may be priority over costume shopping?

Fudge how is your post relevant to the OP. She is stuck as she has no time to prepare not because she does not know what a book is.

In our house we have always gone by the rules that if the DCs can take a book in of the particular character then it is fine. We have to do sci fi books this year. It is pretty hard so I expect to see lots of comic book characters at school ie Batman, Spiderman etc and about 100 Dr Whos.

My DS had some learn to read superman books so he went as that one year as he was so interested in reading them. We are going for a Star Wars theme this year as he now has some Star Wars reading books plus the original Return of The Jedi book of the film. That's good enough in my eyes. They are homemade costumes and accessories so we have made a bit of an effort.

Sci fi books is quite hard IMO.

Exactly. I haven't got the time or the inclination to make any of those costumes. Plus DS wouldn't wear any of them, he has chosen his own costume (Mike the Knight) and will not be swayed. I'm not putting up with a massive tantrum as I try to force him into a homemade red paper wig just so I can award myself a parenting gold shiny and 76478 parenting points.

And we read every single day - his school reading book after school and a story at bedtime.

We do read books every day thank you very much and are currently making our way through the Roald Dahl collection.

I don't know of all of the books you mention, and have thought about Horrid Henry, Harry and Dinosaurs but wasn't sure about normal clothes.

I've only got in at 7.30 tonight after work and finish late tomorrow.

My DS will dress up as batman. He has batman books.

I don't care if it lazy. Ds likes these books. Plus we read all the time'go the library weekly etc. I am not making a big effort because it isn't about the outfit but about the principle of reading. Why not have a Work Book day without the need to dress up?? Just bring in book.

I can't get DS to dress up as his favourite book character - wouldn't work.

Make life as easy for yourself as possible. My experience is that even if you make a supreme effort, someone else will always have made an even bigger effort, so why make life hard?
