Shaking with anger right now Angry the article doesn't tell the full story, the comments fill in some gaps.

Solicitors will always try to mitigate for their clients, and 'family man' is pretty standard code for 'can't think of anything else to say but he has relatives somewhere'. It means nothing.

I'd say the fact that prisons are full to bursting has more to do with the sentencing.

Short of murder/manslaughter and financial/tax related crimes, don't most people end up with community/suspended sentences these days?

Punching someone in a nightclub as a one off probably isn't the sort of thing best punished with prison anyway.

Why are you so angry about it?

It's my husband who was punched, the effects have been ridiculous. I know that this man has no remorse, I know that he finds this funny. He was basically caught because he was bragging about it. Sorry if that breaks Mumsnet rules. So angry I can't think straight.

It's why the NW community I used to live in rarely bothered the police with little trifles like that.
They sorted it out for themselves so as not to worry the judge with the stress of convicting a violent thug. If the law fails, vigilantes step in.

He obviously plead guilty, showed remorse and there are no previous convictions mentioned. Prison is there for punishment, segregation from society and rehabilitation. Im not saying what he did wasnt terrible,it was and he has been convicted.

You have every right to be angry -newnewnewname

He'll do it again mark my words as scum like him always do, and hopefully then he'll get punished for it adequately.

He's reallyreallyreally sorry?
Of course he is. Confused
But never mind, he's going to be a daddy and that's a get out of jail card free.
I'm a teacher, if I'd been convicted of a crime like that, do you think I should keep my job?

Why didnt your husband have a pop back at him instead of asking the bloke why he hit him ?

Sorry to hear that newnew - I hope your DH makes a good recovery. Sometimes there is no justice in this world :(

Clarkson - and what would that have achieved then?

Report
MrsBungle · 10/02/2014 16:07

If violent thuggery isn't punishable by prison then I am not sure what should be.

and Clarkson erm maybe because OP's husband is not a violent dickhead who wanted to escalate the situation further and clearly this man had a broken jaw that required hours of surgery - getting a further injury would have been helpful - your post is totally idiotic.

'Why didnt your husband have a pop back at him instead of asking the bloke why he hit him ?'

Because her husband isn't a brainless drunken aggressive thug?

I would have thought it would have been standing up for yourself, apparantly not then.

Report
MostlyMama · 10/02/2014 16:10

clarkson, why should her husband lower himself to his level?

Report
newnewnewname · 10/02/2014 16:12

He plead guilty at the eleventh hour because there was so much evidence against him.
The article doesn't describe exactly what happened. My dh knew straight away that his jaw was in pieces as a piece of bone was sticking into his mouth between two teeth. He collected himself and came home to me and our dd, like a real family man does, rather than risk further injury or getting himself into trouble.

That is so not the definition of standing up for oneself.

Trouble is, our prisons can only take about 88,000 inmates.
All Governments in this country refuse to build any more prisons. So judges know that only the worst criminals can be in there iyswim.

You have every right to be angry. It's an average sentence though I'm afraid. To the poster who asked why this chap didn't have a go back !!!! Maybe because he is a law abiding decent person. Op have you got victim support ?

Report
MothratheMighty · 10/02/2014 16:14

Like I said clarkson, the way it would have worked in my area would be that the thug would have been jumped a few days later by a group, and battered.
Is that how you want our country to deliver justice?

of course newname that is what most reasonable, well-adjusted, non-idiots would do. Honestly, I'm shocked at the idiocy of some folk.

I hope your family can move on from this, what a terrible ordeal.

I'm not shocked, I've read some of clarkson's other posts.

Thanks everyone. The man is an oaf!! Believe it or not, I went to school with him, though we didn't really know each other and it doesn't seem to have had any bearing on his deciding to target my dh.

The comments on the article show how disgusted most people are with this sort of thing. I just hope that he reads them and takes some of them to heart rather than just as a big joke.

I've not said what I have to shock, its just how I would handled it myself. Each to their own I suppose !

If someone has just hit you hard enough to break you jaw - of course you feel like getting into a fight with them Hmm.

I'm so sorry your DH was assaulted and hope that you can both put this pitiful excuse for a man out of your minds.
