I had the 'tidy' of food cupboards yesterday

I had 8 tins of soup in a flavour I no longer enjoy

8 tins of creamed rice

5 beans and 5 hoops I won't use in the next 2 months (have loads more)

Pears, peaches and several sauces I bought to make stuff like fatijas but never

Instead of binning them I took them to the local foodbank (sally army)

Mentioning this in case anyone fancies doing similiar Smile

I honestly don't think I have things in my cupboards / fridge that I will never use, but I probably have stuff that I will never use up.

I plan meals for a week before I shop so everything I buy I use at least once. However, I know sometimes I will buy an ingredient that I use only part of, put it in the fridge, then some time later realise that it should have been used up within about 3 weeks of opening or something.

Obviously none of that stuff would be useful to a food bank but when I do my weekly Sainsbury's shop I always buy a few extra items to put in the food bank as they have a collecting point just past the checkouts.

Good idea although I tend to buy less & replace what has run out as I have a tiny kitchen with not much storage space. I have donated excess festive treats to the foodbank as there is only so much chocolate I can eat.

I do a regular purge of my cupboards - usually when everyone is out so I don't have to explain.

I do all the cooking in the house, so I can throw out my dodgy purchases and things my MIL thought we needed.

YANBU. I know we have loads of stuff we won't use or is now out of date. I need to get organised and sort out the cupboards.

you won't care if it's out of date when it's the zombie apocalypse Grin

Not U, but barring DH's packet of blancmange mix, I know I can/will use everything currently in my cupboards.Firstly, because I regularly do storecupboard dinners, and secondly because I cleared out the whole kitchen in just before Christmas and dumped all the half-used jars of jam and gifts of weird herbal tea. Even then, no excess tins (but lots of half-bags of various dried beans. Stick 'em in a jar and call it a 10-bean mix).

I regularly tidy my cupboards. At least every 3-6 months. Somehow though I always seem to find something with an expiry date of 12 months previous. I don't know how it happens.

We'll use everything, but we have a tendency to go shopping for more food instead of using up the noodles/jars of sauce/tins of tuna that seem to sit in the cupboard for months before anyone uses them!

Luckily they have long shelf lives Grin

Don't look in my spice cupboard or you'd be horrified!

Everything else we use though.

No, because we often have a frugal student month/fortnight where we eat what we've got in the cupboards and buy the minimum of fresh and extra food.

I probably have a few things, but do have a clear out once in a while of things that have gone out of date.
My DM, on the other hand, will have loads of stuff in her cupboards. I cleared out her freezer the other day and threw away things that were 10 years old. Regardless of whether or not anyone thinks something would still be ok to eat if it has been deep frozen, if you haven't used it in the last 10 years, you're not likely to use it at all!

I have two tins of lychees that have started to actually meld into the shelves, they've been there that long.

My food cupboard is filled with herbs, spices, sauces and chutneys, all of which are used regularly or have a long shelf life. I have very few tins, tomatoes and beans mainly which are used a lot. The freezer is regularly organised otherwise I lose chicken breasts and end up buying more, thinking I have none. I very rarely find anything that is out of date.

The fridge though is another matter, people keep hiding things at the back of it and I only find it when its grown legs and crawled to the front,

I already sent the stuff I will never eat into school with DD when they were collecting for a food bank!

I've got presents of exotic chutneys and bottles of oil with twigs and leaves in them.

I really should throw them out. Especially the bottle of vinegar with ghostly, disintegrated raspberries in it that looks like a macabre medical exhibit.

I love the feeling of having nothing in my kitchen cupboards that I won't consume within the next couple of months.

I found some very old tinned prunes that had swollen and were stuck to the shelf in their own syrup.

I was going through a tagine phase before I realised I don't really like fruit in meat stews.

In my cupboard I have a can of Pigeon brand fermented lettuce and a can of tripe. DH likes to bring stuff home from holiday but will then leave it in the cupboard for years. We'll never use them but they're good comedy value Hmm

We have duplicates of most spices as one box was shoved out of sight when we moved in so I replaced them and then found them 18 months later. Some we even have triplicates of from before DH and I moved in together 5 years ago.

Then there's the cartons of emergency formula (DS was ebf and never had a drop), biscuits I no longer like...

I had a massive cupboard clear out just before Christmas and found stuff that went out of date in 2001. I've moved house twice since then

My spice shelf is full of jars that have only been used once, but I don't think anyone wants ancient, opened jars of cardamom and the like

I usually buy some extras on my weekly shop and put them in the collection box on my way out

Where does fermented lettuce come from and what do you do with it?

I like braised lettuce - I saw it on Saturday Kitchen and it turns out all nutty and buttery and looks like you're a proper cook. As well as being able to use up the one sad Little Gem from the twin pack that I always forget about in the bottom of the fridge.

I'm always tempted by the tins of beans, tripe and sausage in a tomatoey sauce in my local deli until I remember that I've tried tripe and don't like it.
