AIBU?

To be pissed off about the so called healthy eating advice we've been given for years ?

I did the Atkins diet about 8 years ago when it was considered faddy and dangerous. Low fat was the healthy way to go. I got so much hostility about it, almost like I was a climate change denier. To my surprise,I lost 2 stone easily and quickly. Unfortunately I got scared by all the health warnings about how bad it was for you so eventually went back to a ' normal' diet. And put it all on again. Am currently watching the C4 doc about how sugar is bad for you. Of course it bloody is !!

Why can't the authorities wake up and realise its not fat that makes you fat? It's sugar and fast acting carbs.

It's time we had a major overhaul in our thinking about what really makes us fat...

the thing that strikes me about all the diet fads over the years is that You Will Lose Weight If You Cut Out An Entire Food Group. (except veg. but the rest holds)

When I was obsessively checking carb contents of food, I'd see high sugar amounts in food that shouldn't even have sugar in, soups, lasagne etc. and don't even get me started on so called healthy low fat yoghurts...

Too much fat makes you fat.

Too much sugar makes you fat.

Too many carbs make you fat.

The Atkins bloke died of heart failure.

You just have to eat less and exercise more and make sure that it is a balanced diet. Keep off processed food as much as possible.

The only way is to calorie count
What you put in & what you expend
Pretty easy really

Actually he didn't. He was in his eighties and fell over. You see, this is the kind of misinformed crap I've had to deal with for years. We've all been brainwashed...!!

Eating good fat does not make you fat.

I agree op!

And actually, low carbing is just that! LOW carbing not no carbing, so no food group is being cut out

Sugar is addictive and that's a good reason to put it into manufactured food, you get addicted and keep going back for more.... And more

I am watching too Scarlet, shocking isn't it?

The thing is that the Sugar Industry can say "okay as part of a balanced diet until they are blue in the face but all the while it is added in such massive quantities to foods we will never have a balanced diet.

I agree that lower carb (and therefore lower sugar) is the way to go.

I am following a low carb diet...I have lost 8lbs so far.

Sugar is the issue, not fat.

Worth reading anything by Dr John Briffa regarding low carbing.

And why is taxation seen as the only solution...?

Too much food makes you fat. Any food (apart from celery perhaps). Diet groups that tell people "eat as much fruit & veg as you like because they contain 'empty calories'" are talking bollocks. I have seen fat people at work eat a mixing-bowl-size portion of salad because "there are no calories in it"

I really check out the sugar levels in foods now....it is eye opening.

If experts were wrong in the past why aren't they wrong now?

I am suspicious of anything that says cut out an entire food group, tbh.
It seems to be overprocessed anything that causes the problems. Even processed veg stuff seems to have the nutrients removed and that causes problems with appetite and feeling unsatisfied.

Eating more than your body needs of anything will make you fatter.

If you don't want loads of sugar, don't buy processed/premade crap.

Absolutely, cut your portions, increase your exercise and eat a balanced diet - and use your common sense.

I have tried every diet under the sun, of course they all work, but what you need to do is find a sensible eating plan that you can follow for the rest of your life which I am too greedy to do Grin.

It's the sugar not the fat which makes you fat. Agree with everything you say, OP. i think it's more sinister than the authorities failing to wake up to this fact- the food industry/sugar producers/diet industry/farmers have pushed the low fat (false) message and hidden the evils of sugar in their own business interests. Meanwhile millions get obese, go on a low fat diet, lose a bit, regain and then some only to die increasingly prematurely of an preventable disease such a type 2 diabetes.

I've been reading The Bitter Truth (which is Dr Robert Lustig (I think that's right)) book about sugar. It is unbelievable!! I cannot believe all the faffing about I've done with making sure I ate low fat stuff. No wonder my weight has been all over the shop. Totally agree OP.

So you lost weight and put it back on - that says to me its not a sustainable diet, no matter what excuses you make it was obvious it doesn't work or you would have stuck with it.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to change your lifestyle and have a healthy diet and exercise. Most faddy diets stop working as soon as you stop because they aren't designed to work long term

SinisterSal · 20/01/2014 20:22

You'd be a long time overeating on lettuce to the extent it makes you put on weight

Which eating plan cuts out a whole food group then?

I think they way sugar is added to food has made us crave it. And you don't even need to taste it for it to be there.

If you look on the Low Carb threads it is apparent that people eat many more calories on low carb/high fat eating but still lose weight as we process sugar and fat in different ways.

Procrastinating · 20/01/2014 20:24

It is just something new to make money. As was low fat, as was Atkins and now sugar.

Report
SinisterSal · 20/01/2014 20:24

All the no-fat diets, then no carb diets, also vegetarianism etc - people lose weight on all of them. But they all have their detractors
