To think that if you ask AIBU....

You should be prepared to be told "YES"!

Not exactly a thread about a thread, more about multiple threads - so many, in fact, that I'm sure this has been said before! But there is a question mark built into this forum topic, and if you are absolutely, resolutely, determinedly sure that you are ABSOLUTELY IN THE RIGHT, perhaps positing the question on a t'internet forum isn't the wisest of ideas.

I'm frequently astounded by the number of people who pose a question and then, in the face of resounding consensus that they need to re-consider their reasoning, will argue themselves inside out that every single person who is in total and complete agreement that they are BU is wrong. (Am also rather heartened on those occasions where someone is all in a tizz, gets told to untwist their knickers, and sportingly holds up their hands and says "fair cop, will have a more careful think about it". I like those people.)

So: AIBU???

NotYoMomma Tue 17-Dec-13 14:52:14

YANBU

and then the drip drip drip feeding to prove they are not bu

I fucking HATE a drip feeder

TheFutureSupremeRulersMum Tue 17-Dec-13 14:52:57

If I say YABU will that create a paradox?

SanityClause Tue 17-Dec-13 14:54:38

That was what I was going to say, SupremeRulersMum!

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange Tue 17-Dec-13 14:58:47

YABU <world is sucked into a paradox vortex>

SqueakyCleanLibertine Tue 17-Dec-13 15:03:22

YABU they are the funniest smile

Ginocchio Tue 17-Dec-13 15:05:51

YABU to be astounded. What is the internet for, if not to spout forth opinions and refuse to acknowledge alternative points of view?

<awaits drip feed of why OP has never seen internet before and so is totally right to be astounded>

thebody Tue 17-Dec-13 15:07:49

you are right but I generally love the twats who post and act like this because they really don't mean aibu

They really mean 'wasn't I right and everyone please tell me how clever i am.' then get pissed off when posters explain to them 'no you're a twat.' grin

MelanieRavenswood Tue 17-Dec-13 15:09:33

YABU. This isn't a jury or some place of divine judgement. They have a right to ask. You have the right to give an opinion. They are free to disagree with that opinion.

I do dislike it when there is a lot of reasoned argument or debate and the OP reckons she is being bullied because no-one agrees with her...on the other hand after many posts saying YABU in stronger and stronger tones it does become a bit pointless and sometimes cruel to keep piling in.

thebody Tue 17-Dec-13 15:09:56

to add don't belive in any drip feed it's just people lying and changing the story when others disagree with them.

sapfu Tue 17-Dec-13 15:10:44

In principle, YANBU but in practice YABU because whilst it is phrased as a question, more often that not what is really being said is not 'might I be wrong about this' but - as a wise mner whose name I've forgotten, sorry, said - 'I am needy, please validate me.'

Maybe mn needs a new section 'I'm going to rant about this, agree with me, bitches' and rename AIBU 'I'm not 100% certain about this, what do you think?'

But of course that wouldn't be half as much fun. wink

TheListingAttic Tue 17-Dec-13 15:10:55

NO, NO, NO, you don't understand! I've never seen the internet before, so I didn't know, and anyway it was like this....

grin Thought I was going to get more straight YABUs than that!

somethingchristmassy Tue 17-Dec-13 16:34:38

YANBU, but some people are pretty vicious and nasty on here, which there's no need for. Perhaps the board should be called "AIBU, if so please attack me viciously and personally making massive assumptions about me and my life", just to make it clear??

YWNBU to wonder what the hell I'm still doing here, it's compulsive.

TheListingAttic Tue 17-Dec-13 17:02:49

Oh yes, I totally agree that some people are needlessly aggressive when it comes to telling people exactly how unreasonable they are. Can sometimes understand why snidey responses get people's back up and they come out firing. It's more the people who simply aren't ready to listen to reason that I mean....

....oh God, I'm doing it! "No, see I'm right because...."

I think some people post when they are quite emotional, fail to give relevant information, and FORGET THAT WE CAN'T READ MINDS, hence their confusion when people disagree with them.

OTOH some people replying to AIBU threads are deliberately unsympathetic

NewtRipley Tue 17-Dec-13 17:52:07

I agree with sapfu and somethingchristmassy

NewtRipley Tue 17-Dec-13 17:54:03

I think some drip-feeding is post-rationalisation, but I think some is genuinely because people haven't thought to give full info. before they posted

Not a mistake I'd ever make on AIBU

<shudder>

pianodoodle Tue 17-Dec-13 17:54:26

To be fair I've seen plenty where the OP seems reasonable but the first person to chime in with YABU hasn't read the OP properly and then loads of other jump on board - quite often asking daft things that are actually in the OP if they bothered to read it.

The OP then tries to clarify only to be told they're drip feeding... I always feel sorry for those ones!

I think that some people see ibu as a free for all though where they have the right to post whatever they want, however they want, without any consideration to the fact that there are actual people on the other end of the posts they are responding to.

Some people take the tone that "if you didn't want harsh responses then you shouldn't have posted in ibu." I disagree with that stance - I think that posters deserve the same level of respect regardless of where on the boards they post, and while the disclaimer at the top of the topic says "it is not a fight club," it blatantly is seen that way by a lot of people.

That being said, if I want to post something contentious then I will post it in ibu.
