My six year old both roller skates and ice skates. She's not particularly co-ordinated so I would say six (or even younger) is fine. She wears helmet and pads.

I learned to skate when I was six.

I think it's a great age to learn. Probably better in the park than careering round pavements at first though Grin

I think mine was 5 when we got him inline skates - though I am a very keen skater, and his father is reasonably keen, which had some bearing.
I don't think 6 is too young.

We bought some for DD at a car boot when she was three. I don't know if she was too young, or my back was too old, but she's only used them once ...

My son loves the roller disco we take him to. He doesn't have his own pair yet but he will on his birthday. Quad style.

No, it is not. My DD1 had them at that age. DD2 hasn't yet at 8 though, as she can fall off a flat surface. It depends on the child.

I think it's a great age too Smile . My 6 year old mastered rollerskating in about 5 mins. She was much more able than her 8 year old sister. She also went ice skating for the first time last week & it was the same story.

Anything that get them up & outside is a good thing imo.

Hope not, that's what 5yo DD1 is getting for christmas! Though they are more what I would call roller boots really. We went to a roller rink recently and she picked it up really quickly, she was better than me! which isn't very hard

I had roller skates at about five! Definitely not too young at all.

It's ok if the child's coordination and physical development is good. They also need to be protected and have confidence.

No

My 3 yo can ice skate. 6 is getting old to learn IMO.

no not at all sounds like a good age!

MigGril · 10/12/2013 09:59

no not at that age. our local rink does lessons for younger ones then that.

I learnt to roller skate at 5. My dad who is generally crap taught me as it was one of his hobbies!

YABU, six is fine. I actually think most kids start before then.

Is it heck too young.
Blimey kids are ice skating and skiing younger than that.

I hope not - my 5-o is desperate for them for her birthday next month! I suspect she'll start slowly, holding hands and wearing a lot of pads and helmets.

Sounds fine to me-sure I was roller skating at that age-as were friends.

Definitely not too young, all able to skate by 4 or 5 here.

No. My 4yo dd is a confident skater. My 5yo ds has asked for skates from
Santa too.

My 6 yo old has skates.

Report
ginnybag · 10/12/2013 10:16

Uh, no. Definitely not too young.

My nearly 4yo DD ice skates and roller skates, albeit with predictable skill level, and I had skates at around the same age.

If anything, it's possibly a bit on the old side!

Just have them use the helmet and pads from their scooter or bike and they'll be fine.
