Just heard today that Asda and morrisons will hike there prices up as the store in the uk subsidise the ones in Scotland.

Also the persident of the European union has said last week on hard talk Scotland will not be able to jump the que on the back of the uk coat tails and will have to join and fresh and wait in the back of the que

And royal mail have also said they may stop mail to the far flung parts of Scotland if they go ita lone as they loose money in the shetlands ect and they would only be required to provide mail in the uk.

And it seems to me all the bits in the white paper are all assertions and weather they keep the pound ect is not actually up to them.

I think this is gonna be like ringing your boss when drunk it sounds like a good idea at the time

But They will regert it in the morining

The supermarkets mentioned didn't even say that. Already been disproven.
Royal Mail has already been privatised, If Scotland become independent we will have a public owned postal service again anyway.

We pay more in taxes than we get back from Westminster.

YABU to assume all Scots actually want independence. Personally I think it's a lovely romantic idea but has no chance of working in a practical sense. I've been warning of the potential of things like this to happen for a while.

YANBU Its a totally daft and half-baked idea. I live in Scotland and am genuinely shitting my pants at the number of people who say they will vote YES but haven't't the slightest idea of the ramifications.

What I believe to be an independent assessment of the economics (in The Economist) said that assuming Scotland got 90% of north sea gas and oil then for the time being it would be neutral (huge subsidies from rest of uk would be lost, but offset from oil and gas revenue)

But the country would arguably have to take a proportion of RBS and Lloyds bailout debts, and would be hugely vulnerable to fluctuations in price of oil/gas on wholesale markets. And of course the oil and gas will run out eventually. And there's no guarantee of EU membership.

I'd say let them go so my grandchildren don't have to keep subsidising free uni places, elder care and prescriptions.

Not all of us want independence. Grin

You are assuming a yes vote. I only know 3 people who are voting yes and 2 of them are life long die hard nats. Not come across anyone at work or who I deal with at work who is in favour.

I live in scotland and am praying for a no vote.

Wouldn't they be required to repay all of the Royal Bank of Scotland bail out (the name of the bank being a bit of a give away!)

At least we can decide either way.

Bit better than being ruled by a Government at Westminster that we didn't vote for.

When is the referendum; and would a YES vote definitely mean independence?

I get the impression that a lot of people are treating it like "oh well we'll try it out, it can't be any worse can it?" It seems that they fail to comprehend that this is forever, there is no going back.

The vote is on Thursday 18th September 2014 and yes its a definite.

ummm, to those who insist that England is subsidising uni places and Care of the elderly... what are you on about? Unis in Scotland are full of English students too and the last time I checked Scots also pay taxes (and contribute quite a lot of revenue to the UK as a whole) so deserve their care in later life just like anyone else.

Having said that I'll probably vote to stay together because it makes no sense to break up a country in this day and age. It's a backwards step IMO.

Quote from BBC article about shops putting prices up:

"However, the Financial Times said one of the big four supermarkets had confirmed it might put prices up."

Not quite what you say, OP, is it.

YANBU.

I'm finding it more fascinating the closer it gets. But it's a bit like watching a slow car crash waiting to happen. I can see why Scots are tempted to vote for independence on an idealistic basis, but I can't see it being economically beneficial.

The supermarkets, I thought had announced there would be a hike in prices in an independent Scotland. I'll watch the 10 o'clock news with interest.

Thursday 18th September, and yes. (50% plus 1)

Ffs isn't it about time these threads stopped? don't lump us all in the "yes" camp. Most people I know are voting against. I really dislike the way some folk on mn are getting about Scotland. we can't all "feck off". And threads like this are just a place for some people to let their true colours shine and prove themselves to be arseholes. Second thread in a week lumping is all together. There are millions of us. We are not borg, we don't have a singular mind.
