My DD7 has just decided that she has to watch Star Wars. Am I being unreasonable to completely ignore the 3 newer films and jump straight in to the 'good' ones?

Go right ahead. The newer ones make no difference to the story anyway and 3 is just crap.

YANBU. Awful timing, they were on ITV a couple of weeks ago!

Definitely start with the better (Harrison Ford - swoon!) films

Yanbu, start with New Hope, Empire strikes back, Return of the. Jedi. The digital enhanced versions have better effects.

Up until this week she had no interest at all but two boys playing with light sabres and now it's Star Wars Star Wars Star Wars!
So, thank you and it's the originals for us!

Yeah, just the originals. Wish you could get ep 4 without that awful Jabba the Hutt addition. You can't, can you?

YANBU. There actually are only the three original films. There was a rumour they made some more, but that is a lie.

Even if you do choose to watch them all, it's so much better in the original order. "Luke... I AM your father!" has no impact if you already knew.

Muh! Spoilers!

Absolutely right to start with A New Hope and act like eps 1/2/3 never Ever happened.

Yes, chronological Not story timeline order.

Vader is a much better villain if you don't have a backstory.

AnUnearthlyChild · 07/12/2013 21:32

punt hahahaha

you know he dies in the end, right?

The only possible answer to that is...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I've seen an interesting suggestion, though I haven't tried it myself - to watch 4 then 5 - so, ending with the revelation - then 1, 2 and 3 as an extended 'flashback' before finishing with 6 to tie up the ending/redemption etc.

CruCru · 07/12/2013 21:39

If you do show the newer ones, the best order is

IV
V
II
III
VI

Episode I is enjoyed by kids but is not needed for the story.

ds (whose name just so happens to be luke) is soooo looking forward to getting his first mobile phone so he can file dh's number as 'darth vader' Grin

So, these are not the DVDs I'm looking for....

Oh go on, do CruCru's suggested order - it's called Machete order and it's one of the pinnacles of geek culture.

Here

However, I think a 7 year old would probably actually enjoy episode 1; the pod race and Sodding Jar Jar Binks are very appealing at that age, so maybe do:

IV
V
I
II
III
VI

But you might have to use your skill and judgement about whether to do part III, because it is quite harrowing. I wish there was a heavily cut PG version that younger children could watch, but although you could edit the fights the actual events are upsetting in and of themselves.

Funnily enough our DD aged 7 has also just decided she wants to watch Star Wars. We started with A New Hope last night and will work our way through them, but episode III will be a while off, it is too gruesome for her.

However, the revelation won't have any impact on her, we're a big Star Wars following family so she already knows all the background. Grin

Glad I found this thread. We are not a Star Wars family but DS2 who us 6 in Jan is obsessed and had asked for the films for Christmas and we would have no idea what order to show them.

YABU let her watch them all! My kids love them. Great story including the first ones.

They are all deadly dull.
