When I'm in John Lewis (and can afford it) I like to visit their restaurant and have a bite to eat and cup of tea Cake in my tea I like to have full fat milk...yesterday when I asked for full fat I was told that they only have semi skimmed ...but have full fat milk in the children's lunch box meals AIBU to think that in this age of healthy eating for children and some adults that the full fat milk should be available for adults (their choice) and the healthier semi skimmed to be put in the children's lunch box meals instead of the less healthy FF milk??? not a major 'issue' in the grand scheme of things but just think it's 'odd' IYSWIM

There is more calcium as I understand it in full fat milk than semi skimmed so why wouldn't it be in the childrens' boxes?

Children need full fat fat!

Children under 5 (I think) are supposed to have full fat milk as they need fat in their diet.

Except that children are supposed to drink full fat milk, and most adults prefer semi skimmed in tea because f/fat is too rich for the clean taste of tea.

Did they open a carton of F/fat from the children's boxes so that you could enjoy your preference?

Full fat is healthier for children.

full fat is fine for kids, and they probably have it in individual cartons for the lunch boxes, so not easy to give you some.

TBH I have never even considered asking what sort of milk comes with my hot drink!

BigFatGoalie why the biscuit??? Confused

Unless milk has changed since mine were little ... There's no less calcium in semi-skimmed than in full fat...and back then full fat was recommended up til 5.

There is actually more calcium in skimmed milk I believe.

But does it matter what they have once in a while in a shop restaurant? Give them whatever milk you like the rest of the time.

Binkyridesagain · 30/11/2013 19:30

The calcium is in the watery part of the milk, not the cream, so semi skimmed and full fat have similar levels of calcium, the fat in milk contains vitamins A&D which are removed in the skimming process.

Full fat milk, in TEA?! UABVU!!

I think for adults providing SS as the milk makes sense as its a middle ground. I drink skimmed at home but will drink SS when out, but full fat makes me feel sick so I avoid that.

For children where possible providing full fat makes sense

It is the fat soluble vitamins in milk which make ff milk more healthy for children.

moldingsunbeams sorry if it read wrong but when I said 'some adults' I was actually referring to myself who's a happy, sometimes healthy, size 20 Grin and yes JL did say to me we only have FF milk in the children's lunch boxes apparently they do not supply to the adults...my 'guilty pleasure' is definitely having FF milk in tea I find it cools the tea better and is not so 'watery' Smile.
