AIBU?

to expect neighbours of the field where my animals live, to warn me about sodding fireworks?

Just that really. 5Horses and some cows. Broken fencing, traumatised panicky animals. Not sure about injuries as too dark to tell. Had i been told that these particular morons neighbours were having fireworks i could have moved animals and administered sedatives. But no. No warning. From an elderly couple too. Annoyed isn't the word.

a) Do they know where you live?
b) It is 5th November. Surely you were expecting this?

you weren't expecting fireworks? on guy fawkes night?

LEMisafucker · 05/11/2013 21:33

YANBU fireworks should be fucking banned - and whilst its guy fawkes tonight, many people had fireworks at the weekend so not necessarily expecting them tonight no!

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 05/11/2013 21:33

I agree that it's shitty however yabu not to expect fireworks tonight

Its a rural area, with only a few houses. This house is right next to the field. And no, i wasn't expecting them to have fireworks. They are really quite elderly and have never had them before. I don't expect them NOT to have them, but to have a bit of consideration and warn me. They don't know where i live but i see them daily.

YANBU... I would suggest buying a cockerel

How very inconsiderate and stupid, move the muck pile to their end I would write them a letter and ask in future if they could give you warning.

Report
AmberLeaf · 05/11/2013 21:37

I can understand you annoyance as your animals have been worried, but it is the 5th of november, surely the date is warning enough?

Report
WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/11/2013 21:37

Sorry but it's your responsibility as an animal owner. We've all been warned for years about making animals safe on Bonfire Night. My cats (i do know its not the same thing as horses and cows) have been locked in since mid-afternoon. You have to work on the assumption this might happen.

But yes they should have told you too.

Realise i've contradicted myself there. I wasn't expecting them to have fireworks, they are very elderly and have never had them before. I realise that they can have them if they want, but expect a bit of common sense and a warning that they will have them and what time.

My neighbours at home put a note through everyones door saying they were having some at 7pm. Fine. Husband Got the home animals inside, some music on and distracted them.

I'm another horse owner and I've never been told off fireworks, even by the yard owners. No I don't expect there to be fireworks every night around 5th Nov but obviously expect it on the night and the closest weekend.

Don't get me started on fucking Chinese lanterns. Dangerous and should be banned because there are do many fuckwits that's can't follow simple instructions. They are a danger at worst and littering at best. If you asked someone to just go to a field and throw it on the ground and walk off most wouldn't. Get somebody to set fire to it and let it float off out of sight and out of mind and that's ok right.

Ynbu, I wish they'd ban fireworks unless it's an organised display. Bloody sick of them and the idiots that let them off with no thought for others.

I would suggest buying a cockerel

and some peacocks/hens,and a demented donkey.

Rather than ban them, you should have to put a forewarned notice in the local paper, stating the date you intend to let off fireworks.

Report
Fairenuff · 05/11/2013 21:43

I realise that they can have them if they want, but expect a bit of common sense and a warning that they will have them and what time.

You expect them to have the common sense to warn you when, as you said above, they don't even know where you live, but you don't have the common sense to predict that, as it's the 5th of November there may be fireworks.

You should have anticipated this and made sure your animals were protected. That is your responsibility, not anyone else's. If you can't think of them how can you be cross at others for not doing the same.

YABU.

This is kind of a reflection of a lot of the threads on MN. People just don't talk to their neighbours. If I was having fireworks in my back garden I would tell the nearby neighbours who have animals. It's courtesy surely? There's a bus advert campaign near me about talking to your neighbours and I think it's crazy a campaign needs to be run but a good idea to reduce the number of calls to the council about neighbours. Of course the OP generally expects fireworks on or around Nov 5th but cos it's midweek unless someone tells you you'd be tranquillising your animals from last Friday to next Saturday. If her neighbours had mentioned it when they saw her she could have done something about it. It's really quite thoughtless to scare animals if you live rurally. And the OP has said they were elderly and had never done it before and so didn't expect it now.

Tomorrow i can hope that the fences are still intact and the animals still where they should be. Uninjured.

Maybe it being 5th nov i should expect some fireworks but not had a problem in several years i wasn't expecting one tonight.

YABU

It's Bonfire Night, it's bound to happen. If not right next to you, somewhere close.

Calling them morons is harsh too.

But YANBU to care about your animals. Hope they're ok.

Bowlersarm · 05/11/2013 21:44

I think you are a bit unreasonable to refer to them morons. Yes they could have thought it through from your point of view, but they probably had enough on their plate if they were entertaining. And they are entitled to have fireworks on 5th November, even if they haven't had them before.

I think your other neighbours putting notes through the door were exceptionally considerate. I don't think it's the norm.

wonderingsoul · 05/11/2013 21:45

i do you think you should be expecting it.. given that its fire works night. BUT manner cost nothing.

we had fireworks in my parents garden tonight, right behind the gard is a feild that horses are kept. my dad phoned the owners up to ask if it would cause to much distress to them, the guy said nope, go ahead but he apprciated being asked.

it would have been nice.. but i think it depends on how close they are to you. (in our case it was just a wallbetween garden and feild) and of course you should have realized there would be some.

fairenuff they don't know where i live but their son lives two doors away - sorry bit of a drip feed. I see the man and son every day if not twice a day.

It is SUCH a rural area that honestly, no, i don't think its common sense to expect fireworks. Like i said, never had them before so didn't think it would be an issue.

I do think anyone letting of explosives a matter of meters from large animals (mine or not) deserves to be called a moron.

Well then OP despite quite a number of people telling you YABU you're just not accepting it.

Maybe next year expect that it may happen again, and plan accordingly.

We're unbelievably fortunate here , because nearly all the neighbours round us have horses , so over the years , it's become pretty much the custom that no one does fireworks at all . That said , we all chip in to the next village's social fund , then have an organised do at the village hall instead .

I was worried over new boy's attitude to fireworks , as he's still in with a poorly leg , and didnt want him to do him a mischief . Instead , I found him staring fascinatedly at the nearest big town's display , munching hay . If he could have gone 'ooooh ! ' he would have .

Annoying , I agree , but a lesson learned for next year . Next year I'd probably try and pre empt the situation if at all possible .
