I am 31 and mum to 2 school aged children. I have got to this point in my life without killing anyone off with my cooking but in the last week I have learnt 2 things..

  1. You can bake a butternut squash whole. No peeling, deseeding or anything

  2. You can microwave a corn on the cob in its husk (is that what that's called? the leaves?) and then just chop off the ends and it slides out ready to munch

So AIBU to wonder what else I never knew I never knew?

You can use food past its best before date. It really bugs me that people throw so much food away because of dates!!!! Food that has gone off generally has mould or stinks or is slimy.

Eggs that are bad float! If they sink in water they are ok to use.

You can smash out pomegranate seeds with a wooden spoon into a big bowl.

Skins just rub off once beetroot is cooked. I would advise rubber gloves though.

You can chop an unpeeled spud into chunks and shake it about in a plastic bag with teaspoon oil and pinch of herbs and paprika and then bung in oven to bake into wedges, serve with ketchup and plain yog dip. Also works with other veg like carrots, squash, peppers, onions, broccoli etc.

If you have a large steamer you can put in whole washed (unpeeled!!!) thick end down carrots, parsnips, swedes etc. or any ingredients for a soup or stew. Steam for half an hour till a sharp knife goes in almost easily.Take them out let them cool and then remove the skins, they come away much more easily and the vitamins are not removed.

Then gently fry some chopped onions and garlic and add your chopped veg. and some stock and you have a soup or stew in much less time than usual.

I know it's a cheat but.....

Mix one cake mix with two dollops of buttercream icing (chocolate is best) in a microwave rice cooker. Put lid on. Cook on high for 9 minutes. Voila! Sponge pudding with chocolate sauce!

You can microwave most (possibly all) in a microwave, add a couple of teaspoons of water.

You can cook whole joints/chickens in a SC.

You can cook meat/fish wrapped in foil with veg in a steamer.

If you put eggs in a ramekin and prick the yolk you can 'poach' them in a microwave.
Bacon in a microwave with paper - uhg, just don't bother.

You don't need to peel spuds to make mashed potato. Maybe I'm thick but this had never occurred to me until I saw a friend of DD's mum do it. Changed. My. Life. to an extent, anyway

Butternut squash? Whole? Genius!

Paprika chips are yummy. Even better with balsamic vinegar. Mmm.

I was wondering the other day whether I could make mash without peeling the tatties. Peeling tatties is my absolute pet hate.

does the squash then peel easily ready for soup?

You can blend the skin along with the flesh, you don't need to peel it at all.

I also recently discovered that butternut squash can be bunged in the oven whole and unpeeled. Brilliant, love it!
