...my child asks for a Thomas the tank engine story or Fireman Sam at bedtime?

I'm a firm believer in bedtime stories. My son enjoys them, I enjoy reading them...most of the time, but Good God!!!! Thomas and Fireman Sam are so dull.

Does anyone else have better coping strategies?!!!

Only buy books you like.

2tiredtoScare Sat 02-Nov-13 20:30:32

I've sent myself in to hysterics trying to do all the accents in the Fireman Sam books to try and alleviate the sheer bloody boredom of them, they are soooo long

FromthePinkGlitterySide Sat 02-Nov-13 20:30:37

I do this with fucking Mr men books grin

Sausagewaffle Sat 02-Nov-13 20:32:18

I have tried that, but mine are very observant and tell me i missed a page and must go back...

Sausagewaffle Sat 02-Nov-13 20:32:33

i feel your pain lol

ilovecolinfirth Sat 02-Nov-13 20:32:59

I do try to buy books that I like, but my son was given the box set of 50 sodding Thomas books, and chose Fireman Sam at the library. Agree, Mr Men are really irritating (except Mr Tickle... A bit of a fan of him)

puntasticusername Sat 02-Nov-13 20:34:39

Totally. In our house Mr Men books are read grudgingly, and minus all the adjectives and adverbs.

(I clicked on this thread thinking op meant "skip pages on mn threads and then reply anyway", I was all ready to give op both barrels grin)

stargirl1701 Sat 02-Nov-13 20:35:41

50! Oh dear God. You need to plan your revenge! grin

Only have a few books 'out' at any one time. Put the rest in the garage and rotate them so you are only exposed to one a week!

Milly Buggering Molly Sodding Mandy. angry

MIL bought it for DD, as she had fond memories of it from her childhood. Was she the one who had to read it?!

I used to substitute each instance of "Mother and father and grandmother and grandfather and auntie and uncle and Billy Bastard Blunt and Little Fucking Friend Susan" with "her family" as I lost the will to live halfway through the list! grin

FromthePinkGlitterySide Sat 02-Nov-13 20:38:34

Maybe if you hid one every week over a year DS wouldn't notice. Then in a year they would all be gone!!

Lepreporn Portugal Sat 02-Nov-13 20:39:27

If I ever skip a page my dd age 5. Punishes me by making me start again right from page 1.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor Sat 02-Nov-13 20:40:59

I LOVE Mr Men books! But yes, mmm were absolutely dire. Horrible and pointless and so twee. They got donated pretty swiftly to the local hospital!
Yanbu though, reading can be such a pleasure but it's awful reading boring books. Maybe you could accidentally lose them somewhere? Like the bin?

Coldlightofday Sat 02-Nov-13 20:41:55

I hate Thomas and sodding Sodor.

I prayed I would have a child who felt the same.

I don't.

Toot-toot Mummeee, toot toot...he says. And now, just to test my capacity to not encourage his emergent language AND manners 'Toot-toot mummee. Pleeease?'. I swear he tilts his little head to one side when he says it.

Fucking stupid train.

ilovecolinfirth Sat 02-Nov-13 20:43:24

I think I am actually going to have to get rid of them. My heart sinks at the thought of reading about Perfect Bloody Thomas and Self righteous James

Itsaboatjack Sat 02-Nov-13 20:44:35

YAsoNBU. I always skip pages, my dd was bought a box set of Dora the bloody Explorer books!

stargirl1701 Sat 02-Nov-13 20:45:06

Send the giver if this box set some jam from YouBadBadKitten grin

Coldlightofday Sat 02-Nov-13 20:45:52

James IS self righteous isn't he?

And whatsisname, the scottish one is fucking rude.

But Thomas is a prissy pants.

FortyDoorsToNowhere Sat 02-Nov-13 20:46:58

I read stories to the DC while they are in the bath.

ilovecolinfirth Sat 02-Nov-13 20:52:46

Ooooh, stories in the bath? Time saver! I love it! Imagine accidentally dropping all 50 Thomas Books in the bath at the same time too! ;)
