AIBU?

Mum's nickname for my unborn baby really pisses me off

Mum is calling the baby 'peanut'. I'm nearly 19 weeks and she's done it since 5 weeks despite knowing it annoys me. In fact, since she was told (by me) just how much it's annoying me, she's made a point of doing it more and insists she's not going to call the baby by its name after it's born, but call it peanut instead.

I'm pretty sure I'm being hormonal and precious. But it feels like she's disrespecting me (though if you asked me why, I'd definitely not be able to tell you) and I want to scream whenever I hear it. It's not even as if my own pet name for the baby is particularly complimentary...it's Alien Blush

Anyone else had this or able to shed any light on why it annoys me quite so much?

Or possibly able to talk me into not hating it?

Buy a catering-sized sack of peanuts. Every time she says it, give her a bowlful and walk away.

My childish suggestion is to tell her you're going to call her Old Woman from now on and you'll have the baby call her Knackered Crone.

Or you could point out she had her turn naming a baby, now it's your turn.

lol at Alien

Or say to her "Are you calling it peanut because you are nuts?"

DH and I refer to ours as pea or pea pod - yet I sent my ultrasound pic to my younger brother today and he's referred to it as 'a little poop'. Confused

I think it's kind of funny but if he continues I'll have to have words, and I'll know he'll think I'm being precious!

My mum did the same to me as she didn;t like the name we had chosen for DS and insisted on calling him something else. It drove me crackers. I just got really cross with her one day about it and she stopped.

I'd seriously consider it if it wasn't bound to cost me so much...she does it around 5 times a day, it's a 30 mile drive to her house and I definitely don't have enough bowls Smile

She even texts several times a day saying 'how's peanut?' I don't want to piss on her chips because this is her first grandchild. But it's my first baby and I'm struggling to connect with the bump while she's the one who's creating its identity. (Even other family members have started with it after she hammers the name into their brains).

You know what, given that you've already said how much you DON'T want her to call it peanut, her doing so deliberately IS disrespectful.

I'd just blank her entirely when she says it. It really sounds like she's doing it for a reaction.

You said you want to scream...well, do that. Scream. Maybe then she'll get it.

3xM - we haven't even picked a name yet or even found out the gender! I could understand if she was doing it in rebellion to a name she hates.

I agree with looking. Don't respond to any texts where she mentions peanut and ignore her in person if she says it.

It really grates on me when pregnant women call their babies Peanut, lol. I have known quite a few do this....why?? Can you ask our mum because I really don't understand it, lol Smile

Fot some reason, Peanut does seem very popular. I honestly don't get it either. I have asked mum why...she can't tell me why either. doesn't stop her bloody well doing it though

The other option is that you sit down with her and tell her how passive aggressive it is and that there must be a reason that she is trying to upset you at this special time. lay on the sympathy with a trowel- you are worried about her- shame her into stopping.

Every time she says it could you do something really annoying back. The same thing every time until she gives up.

Cas - I could honestly not compete with my mother where laying it on thick is concerned Blush

Just debating how much drama I'd cause by ignoring her...

I really shouted at a mate of mine who gave my unborn baby a nickname I hated. She got the message.

My Dad really hates that we call our son a little chimp. :)

Just say "mum, can you not call my baby peanut, because ever time you say it I think you've said "penis" and imagine huge cocks waving about, thanks."

Cry, every time she says it make sure you sob uncontrollably and loudly for at least 5 minutes. Nobody wants a crying pregnant woman on their hands Grin

'Mum,keep calling my baby peanut and I shall start calling you twat lips'... And do it, no matter where you are or who you are with. The nickname peanut will cease to exist I promise you.
