to think that 'No, I don't want help packing...'

isn't a cue for the checkout lady to start whipping it all through at 40 miles an hour. I have packing down to a fine art now it's all bring your own bags but I'm not in possession of Superman's superspeed and can't pack when the stuff is basically being thrown at me.

She was very nice otherwise and we exchanged cheery words. While she pelted bottles of high juice and farfalle at me...

Ynbu I have this issue and I go into packing overdrive so I don't keep others in the queue waiting. Would be lovely if they could slow down a bit without being asked and making you look dithery!

This is one of the reasons that I love Waitrose - they scan at your packing speed.

Ah see, I let it all build up and the continue to pack at my usual speed. I will not be rushed. It's quite clearly much easier (and faster) to scan things rather than pack things, so really they should be told to do it at the customer's pace.

I've found that if you just go at your normal sensible speed of packing in Lidl, they have to slow down as they physically can't get any more on to the packing area. Takes nerves of steel though!

I had a woman practically throwing stuff at me in Tescos last time, really winds me up, especially as I'd gone through the gluten free bread meticulously to find the one loaf that wasn't a crumbled mess, only for her to grab it with her long claw-like witch's fingers and throw it at me knocking all the crusts off....grrrr!

Im a checkout operator at Tesco (shock horror) and I scan according to my customers speed.
If they are slow so am I, if there's people waiting, tough.

When asked that question I always titter and say 'I should be ok, it depends how fast you are though!'

That slows the fuckers down. I used to work on a checkout, the last thing you want is to have to pack!

DameDeep, you aren't supposed to pack at the till in lidl are you?

I thought at aldi and lidl you were supposed to put it straight back into the trolley after scanning, then pack into boxes/bags at the big shelf or your boot...

I got at it like a mad thing. Not sure why, I find it very stressful. And more so if dh is there, upsetting my schemes and putting things into my bags as well as his.

I wish people wouldn't be prats about packing in Adli and Lidl. Cheap, cheerful, speedy service - that's why I've been going there for years. It's amazing how quickly they can whip through a queue - brilliant. Then you get some twat who has benefited from the people in front of them doing as they are supposed to - quickly putting shopping in the trolley, packing at the shelf - making a point of carefully packing into their shopping bags at the till at their own sweet speed.
This intensive Aldi advertising has a lot to answer for. Fuck off to Wait(for ages in queues)rose is what I say.

In our Aldis if you let it pile up and don't have a trolly they just grab an arm load and put it on the packing shelf for you then get back to scanning. You should see some of the faces

You need to get to Aldi - you take all your goods over to the shelf and pack as quickly or slowly as you like. It makes the queues go SO much faster.

YANBU but I find myself matching their speed, flinging things into bags in any old order and ending up a sweaty mess at the end. I don't mind in aldi though as that's the system.

TheIggorcist DP putting stuff in my bags as well as his own gives me the rage. He has since been demoted and his job is now to transfer my bags to the trolley and pass me a new one. That's it.

I'm going to Aldi soon, have told DP he can come only if he promises not to try packing bags at the checkout. He thinks he's being clever throwing stuff into a bag in the trolley. He's a Breadsquashingfucker.

I put things on the conveyor in the right order so I'm only ever stuffing one bag at a time - there is always time to sort on the conveyor.

In pack-at-till supermarkets I answer "do you want help packing" with a smiling "no I'm fine so long as you don't go too fast".

At Aldi and Lidl I try to remember to bring a great big IKEA bag so I can just sling everything back into the trolley which I've lined with said bag.

Tesco Scan and Shop.No queuing, no conveyor, no cashier, no packing at the checkout. You have a running total of what you have spent so great for budgeting. You won't look back.

I'd pack quicker if they gave me more than one sodding bag at a time.

Conveyer belt full off food, enough to feed a family for a week? Tesco will award you with two bags.

Need any more and they make you beg.

I just stand there now waiting for it all to pile up. The assistant might then peer around the mountain of food and ask if I need more bags.

Then she'll give me one more.

Why did they move the bags under the counters? It makes no sense.

Pre Scan and Shop a cashier has rammed all my groceries down the conveyor before I had managed to get one of those stupid bags open.

I used to work at Kwik Save. We had tills that were designed with no space at the end for packing, so you had to put everything in a trolley (we always had a spare trolley next to our till). If people brought bags, I put the bags in the trolley, and then the stuff in the bags. If no bags, straight into the trolley with the heavy stuff at the bottom and the light stuff at the top. Seemed to work well enough, but then that was a small rural supermarket. Probably wouldn't pass muster in the lightning-quick city centre!

Have to admit, though, I didn't really like doing the packing. You always got the impression with certain customers that you were doing it ALL WRONG. To be fair, I probably was.

Moved bags under the counter to reduce bag usage - this is why there is no charge for bags in England (think they are introducing one in Scotland and Wales?)
