I love Murray Gold's music! And I don't find it too intrusive in th enew series.

The classic series has some great stories, and I have been a fan since 1963, but watching them again after seeing the new ones, they do seem to be straining to fill their 4 or 6 25 minutes episodes and I can't help thinking how they could have been better done in the new format.

The old Drs Who were ground-breaking, brilliant for its time, etc, but just not a patch on the quality of most of the modern ones. The writing is better, the camerawork and special effects work wonderfully and whilst I don't think that a big budget equals quality, it is money well spent.

Mind, DP and I have isshoos with how much we perceive the modern series are pandering to the American market. Viz that completely implausible motorcycle ride through London that managed to take in most major landmarks, and how it seems every episode has to have, dropped in "Dr WHO?", Enough already.

Yes and no, YellowSwimCossie: a hard core of Americans like/d Dr Who, and that's OK, but it seems they're trying to extend it from the cult and geek circles to EveryIdiot, and that's wrong. The people [in america] who really like and appreciate Dr Who won't be particularly impressed, and it'll just piss off the British core market.

The market is crowded with crap dramas and scifi written by committee where too much money is thrown at too little talent. Dr Who shouldn't try to compete in this market. It didn't used to, and needs to remember those roots, at very least.

BTW, re how crap the Americanism is, want to hear a horror story? I was in the States last year, and watched an episode on BBC America. OMGs!!! Not only are there advert breaks (I was used to this as a possibility - which is why episodes are 45 minutes long these days - almost all American television starts rigidly on the hour or half-hour), but they're, like every 7-10 minutes - barely enough time to get into the story before you're yanked out to be harangued to buy something.

There was the teaser, then a dropped-in piece of crap starting with "My name is Amy Pond, and I met a men ..." YES! They have to be told, at the beginning of every episode, what it's all about, gods forbid somebody might have to do a little Google to find out.

watching the old ones on Watch tv over the weekends and todays was with Adric. never seen that one before.and the silence at the end credits, no music. eerie. brilliant.

what pees me off about the newer ones is the constant 'lets get the obligatory gay reference/snogging/fancying the doctor/dig at God/sexual references/messing about with the best designs of cybermen (like 5th docs ones) and daleks and ice warriors/only 1 assistant most of the ime these days/etc etc tc.every single episode.

and John Simm as the master. no one matches Anthony Ainly.

the old ones had more story, yes some were camp but these days its too in competition with other sci-fi and therefore the sfx/noise/roances have to be bigger and stuff.

YANBU - I love watching the old episodes of Dr Who. The new episodes may have the fancy technical effects but the old ones have more of a story to them but I am really looking forward to seeing the new doctor.

i love MurrayGolds music too, loved the proms when we went there, but the bits and pieces of music in the old ones had more impact IMO.

i loved the old style tardis inside too.plain and simple with the discs on the wall, and cleaner looking. ANd theyd go o more rooms in the Tardis too, not like now.

the masters the pantomime villain, the 'emperor Ming' and Simm just looked like tenant brother.

I love both Classic Who and New Who. Never got on with Jon Pertwee, but everyone else is great. I love the music for the new series, but I do also enjoy the plinky-plonky of the old school. I'm basically anybody's for a pint of cider and black
