AIBU?

To think that "discussions of the day" is not that at all!!

I mean - seriously - look at the boards today/last night - whenever, then look at Discussions of the day - where we are invited to peruse through threads about fucking cakes and home making Hmm Then go into active convos............aint no one talking about it.

Now of course it has all kicked off today but that DoD has been up there for a week now - more?? It certainly does not represent what is being discussed. I know there is a Most active section as well, but what pops up is "discussion of the day".

Let us draw your attention to "the great british bake off et al"

I know you have bigger issues today HQ but actually i think this is part of it - this is OUR site, please make mnet represent US, not what someone thinks we should be. Yeah we like to talk about trivial things, housework and knitting sometimes, but that is NOT why we come on this site!

Why can't discussions of the day reflect what we are actually discussing?

I can't look at Discussions of the Day. The sentence construction, with all the dashes and question marks, is incredibly annoying.

"Things not to do - before you die?"

Reads incredibly badly in my head.

Is this that AF isn't allowed to post for 7 days? And she apparently according to Justine, took it on the chin after MNHQ had warned her?

Because I honestly wondering why all the hype still. She's not banned, she can come back in less than 7 days. I think this needs some perspective.

But I hate it when the site gets like this as I can remember a few examples when good intentions of masses washing over the board and even going in the national media causing a lot of problems for the individual at the centre of it.

Actually the real discussions of the day probably aren't AF and I am barking up the wrong tree. So sorry.

Apart from that, YANBU.

It's incredibly rare that the same thread is in DoD and Most Active at the same time.

Surely that's a bit telling.

Pancake - i think you may have posted that on the wrong thread?

Maybe not - this isn't about AF, but it think the whole AF thing is indicative of the fact that MNHQ are trying to steer us back to "naice" conversations. I have thought this for a long time about "Discussions of the Day" they are often so twee. If anyone came along, new, and read that, they would think we were a bunch of stepford wives!

Probably an unfortunate day to raise this issue alright Grin

But in general, the unrepresentative themes in the DoD makes you wonder who is picking them and on what basis.

Pancakeflipper · 24/10/2013 10:15

I never look at Discussions of the Day as they are not the sort I read/ contribute to. stuff like dairy-free recipes are not interesting to the masses.

Ooh and just noticed we have a job section too. I am not observant to my surroundings.

WE make mnet ALOT of money, shed loads of it - so the site needs to represent US better, really.

hmmm.

discussions of the day

Which lube - for bumsex?
MIL - can I kill her?
DH - can I kill him?
Mum - can I kill her?
How often - do you poo?
I have - a great big boil on my arse, want to see a picture?

Would be more accurate but would scare the bejesus out of the first time browser Grin

Ease them in gently.

Its not our site, its their site. When will people understand this?

Report
DevilsRoulette · 24/10/2013 10:48

It certainly is their site.

And if all the users stopped using it (which I realise they would not in reality, it's a huge site and it would have to be totally wrecked before that could ever happen), that would do them no good at all.

We get a free place to chat. They get to sell us to companies willing to pay for access to us.

Remove the owners and the users have to find a new site.

Remove the users and owners have to find new jobs.

yes but its really only a few people who have the problem with things as they are so I don't think there is any imminent danger of collapse.
People seem to think mn owes them something, I don't get it.

I've noticed this before, the great jarred food debate didn't make it to DOTD bu it was most active

I think Discussions of the Day needs to be renamed:

What MNHQ Wishes We Were Discussing Today.

1950s Housewife - how can I be one?
Pleasing my man - could I do more?
Washing the skirting boards - is anything more fun?
Making cakes - so Janet and John can have a lovely home-baked tea?

YABU. This is not our site, this is their site. We are using it for free. Believe me, if a large bunch of angry people disappeared and never came back, there would still be more than enough people to keep the place going.

LEM

Brew from me to go with your Cake

YANBU

DoD should be changed more frequently and be based on most Active.
Top 3 most active if you like, plus a couple chosen by MNHQ.

it would be a much fairer representation of what is actually being discussed alongside what HQ wants our attention being drawn to (which is also fine as talking about Cake is very important to meWink )

Hmm, YABU and YANBU.

The real discussions of the day are usually AIBUs about real people (or people pretending to be realGrin). It would be a bit crass of MN to select those.

Plus as a PP said, it's primarily a way to signpost discussions for newbies - hence the same debates about goo presents for first time mums, breast feeding advice,

But I do think they should include some of the more risqué stuff. If only to piss off Matthew Wright.

I think it's easy to get so involved in certain topics - AIBU, Chat etc - that you forget that out of the millions of Mumsnet Users, only a small proportion use those discussions.

The other 40 odd discussions more than eclipse these ones.

If all the users that have threatened to leave over the AF thread actually did I'm pretty sure that it'd hardly be noticed.

A sense of proportion is needed - over 1 million users (most of whom won't even know this "drama" is going on), who cares if a couple of thousand go somewhere else?

What actually constituted a PA it's all a matter of interpretation surely?

You're acting like a cunt - PA, opinion or statement of fact?
I think you're a cunt - PA or expressing a personal opinion?
You're a cunt - PA or opinion/fact?

I think the third would be the only real candidate, opinions may differ though.

Some clarification as to what actually constitutes a personal attack might be helpful.

An ignore function might be helpful too, you can't see any posts from the ignored one unless they're quoted, might prevent PAs if there's nothing to attack
