Not something that would normally happen at Maison Fifi but in this case I think it is richly deserved for her open letter to Miley Cyrus. I know Sinead is no stranger to courting publicity but with this one I think she is bang on the money www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24382051

Actually, I'd like to print some of the comments about being worth more than your body or sex appeal out and hand them out to some of the secondary school girls going past my gate on a morning.

I don't know actually. I agree very much with her comments about the music industry basically pimping female performers, but I'm not sure it's good form to target Miley Cyrus personally. She is person of the moment I know, which is why she's been chosen of course because it capitalises on the publicity, but something about it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

YABU.Sinead O Connor has been a whinyarse for about 30 years and this piece of hers is a patronizing load of slut-shaming. There is nothing wrong with wanting to engage in sexual display.

LurcioLovesFrankie Thu 03-Oct-13 15:28:35

Actually, both of the above. I think Cyrus is being cynically exploited by the music industry, and that O'Connor is slut shaming (and her famous "Nothing compares" song was one of the most hideous songs of all time - I used to want to spew every time I heard her whingeing about how she'd counted every single blooming second since she'd been dumped).

BratinghamPalace Thu 03-Oct-13 15:31:18

But Solid she makes an excellent point - that she will obscure her talent and that she should own herself is good advise. I bet that if you got a list of her management team, producers, video production, PR etc it would be man heavy in ALL critical areas. I think well said to o'Connor. Oh, and let's not forget that o'Connor has some serious Mental Health problems before we slag her off too much!

SaucyJack Thu 03-Oct-13 15:35:05

Dear Miley. Don't do what your record label tells you to do. Do what I tell you to do instead. From Some Bald One-hit Wonder.

Hullygully Thu 03-Oct-13 15:37:55

Go Sinead

I wish more women would speak up.

Hullygully Thu 03-Oct-13 15:39:45

I don't think Miley wakes up in the morning and thinks today is a good day to dress lie a slut to make a political point that women should not be judged on er what exactly? Appealing to pricks?

It is far more likely that the MALE music industry tarts her up for the benefit of the shopping erections.

Occam's razer

I agree OP. Miley Cyrus referred to Sinead O'Connor as her inspiration for her recent single, so why shouldn't she reach out and offer her own experience?

Boosterseat Thu 03-Oct-13 16:11:26

LurcioLovesFrankie Nothing compares to you was written by Prince about giving up smoking.

Miley Cyrus is on record as having said she based parts of her Wrecking Ball video on Nothing Compares 2U and is 'inspired' by Sinead O'Connor. She wrote that letter in response to lots of media demands for a quote - instead of the bitchfest they no doubt hoped would ensue, I think O'Connor has written quite a measured response and offered her own experience of the music industry from a protective, rather than patronising instinct.

The message of love and value yourself is a great one.

Have to confess I cringed at the 'your body is for yourself and your boyfriend' bit though. Nope, your body is yours. No-one elses.

Viviennemary Thu 03-Oct-13 16:18:48

How long will it be before it all ends in tears for the dreadful Miley. But I do feel a bit sorry for her.

HerrenaHarridan Thu 03-Oct-13 16:23:44

Saucy jack.
I have severe alopecia and find this very upsetting.
I hope you are immaculately presented and absolutely perfect to be such a utter dick about something someone has no control over.
If I was as much of a dick as you I would wish for you to share but fortunately for me I'm not!

Boosterseat Thu 03-Oct-13 16:24:30

I do feel bad for her actually, ground up and spat out by the Hollywood machine when they are done with her.

Set them up to watch them fall springs to mind.

sarine1 Thu 03-Oct-13 16:27:54

Excellent letter - don't particularly like Sinead O'Connor but I think she's spot on! Good for her.

BrokenSunglasses Thu 03-Oct-13 16:32:28

YABU.

I can't stand Sinead O Connor, she is rude and she gives me the creeps, everything about her just horrible.

If she had wanted to offer advice to Miley Cyrus, who is in need of it, she could have done it privately. She has an agent that could have sorted it for her doesn't she? There is no need for her to have done it publicly, that doesn't come across as if she's trying to help, it comes across as if she's being patronising, and jumping on someone's else's publicity to get some more attention for herself.

If you're not a fan of Sinead/like what Miley is doing, take the letter in isolation and think of it as a general piece of advice to any teenage girl/young woman - the message is by and large a good one to follow.

SadBadMadFat Thu 03-Oct-13 17:13:06

Cant stand Sinead but just read OPs link and shes spot on. so well done. and Im glad thats a public message for ALL teenage girls.

SaucyJack Thu 03-Oct-13 17:15:33

Nah, I'd still be cringing Frankie

"You ought be protected as a precious young lady". Pass me a sick bucket. We're talking about a grown woman.

BrokenSunglasses Thu 03-Oct-13 17:39:58

Frankel, I still think it's attention seeking to have done it so publicly. There was just no need for it to be an open letter, she could have it privately if she really cared.

I hated that body is for you and your boyfriend line too. It reminded me uncomfortably about people arguing that women should wear burkhas as their bodies "are just for their husbands."

Scrubber Thu 03-Oct-13 18:05:32

I largely agree with Sinead too. It is refreshing to hear someone speak out, even though I usually think she's a bit of a weirdo.

poorbuthappy Thu 03-Oct-13 18:08:54

Boosterseat is that true??????
Or am I being gullible?

NotDead Thu 03-Oct-13 18:09:29

occams razor states that the simplest solution is most likely. The simple explanation is that she likes the look. The complicated one.. that she is part of calculating mysoginist record company advisers against her will seems unlikely to me.

Are the majority of her fans older men?

NotDead Thu 03-Oct-13 18:13:08

imagine people posting uninformed advice on the internet instead of talking to people in private!
