AIBU?

To think that grammar matters and to ring Tesco to berate them for their "Same luxury, less lorries" sticker on my loo roll?

As the title says really... As if "10 Items or Less" wasn't infuriating enough, Tesco have now extended this to proudly proclaiming that they use LESS lorries to transport their packs of loo roll.

I would like to ring them just to scream the word "FEWER" down the phone at them.

It does matter, doesn't it? Ok, so perhaps in forums and private emails it matters less if there are a handful of errors here and there, but on advertising and packaging from a national supermarket chain, AIBU to expect them to at least use the correct words?

Did that bit of packaging really make it through every level of their massive marketing department without a single person pointing out the erroneous use of "less"? Or was it a conscious decision because... well... Nope, I cannot fathom the logic of why anyone would knowingly use the wrong word.

This actually made me cross enough to take a photo of the offending item and tweet it to Tesco. That was maybe slightly U of me. Blush

I can't imagine caring. The meaning is perfectly clear so I don't think it matters.

What can I say? It's a distraction from running round after 4 dc (one of whom is autistic) and a husband recovering from knee surgery! Grin

It would bother me too. Switch to Sainsburys

Not sure if I agree, tbh. Meaning is quite cLear. Languages change over time, think their use of less would be used by majority of English speakers. They're huge supermarket though so criticise away!

Drives me crazy too.

The Ocado order confirmation screen used to say "your order has been successfully placed". I used to cringe every time. Thankfully they have changed it, so I guess enough people like me have complained.

Bugs me too . Seriously though I'm an editor and have a genuine love of language. I don't mind typos and mistakes in informal settings but when it's done by a large firm like this it drives me nuts. And then people say "it doesn't matter." GRR it does matter. To me language being used incorrectly is like hearing a lovely piece of music played totally off key.

CailinDana YES! That's exactly it. The English language is a beautiful thing and it horrifies me to see it used so carelessly.

YABU, it's a slogan, they don't have to be gramatically correct, just as rhyming poems don't.

They have looked for two words beginning with the same letter that make sense.

I don't see the problem with "10 or less", either, it is an easy read instruction.

What's wwrong with your order has been successfully placed? Maybe I need more coffee but don't see error?

DrHolmes · 29/09/2013 09:46

Lambzig, do you mean it should have been: "your order has successfully been placed?"

Otherwise I am :s as to why it is incorrect!

If a full sentence was used in incorrect grammer then you would have a point, but both examples are not sentences ( and as said, one is a slogan).

Bollocks, Birds! If they were trying to be alliterative & clever they would have done it with the first two words as well. Eg, Same Style, Less Lorries. It is pure ignorance and highly irritating so YANBU, OP. In fact well done and thank you. GrinGrin

To add I have no problem with meanings changing, new words emerging etc but I do expect large companies with billions of pounds to be able to hire people with an excellent standard of English.

Fewer lorries would ruin the alliterative effect, although I kind of agree with you.

It's not as bad as the mistake that Topshop had on a sign, in our city centre, a few years ago but I can't even remember what it was now.

Lambzig · 29/09/2013 09:52

It now says "your order has been placed successfully" which I think is right. It certainly sounds much less clumsy.

Yanbu. This is nothing to do with language changing - it's just blatantly inaccurate.

Birdsgottafly · 29/09/2013 09:57

Bollocks to you Argy Grin, the two main words are "luxury" and "lorries", this is to justify why they cannot price match Lidl and Aldi and then they move on to the "we care about the planet" tactic.

Advertisers are asked to have a point, even to the simplest slogan and then chose the stand out words, it is phychologists that come up with this stuff, not people who hold PHD's in English.

DrHolmes · 29/09/2013 09:57

I think the first way can be correct too as well as my suggestion.
But yes, I think it does sound less clumsy however, I doubt I would have complained!

CecilyP · 29/09/2013 09:59

I actually think it sounds more clumsy, but I suppose the change will satisfy those who think a split infinitive is wrong (even though it isn't).
