AIBU?

6 yr old playing Grand theft auto

AIBU to think a 6 yr old shouldn't be playing Grand theft auto??

My son has come home from school the last few days saying swear words not in an aggressive way just in the middle of a random sentence. I didn't want to make to much of a fuss about it so just asked him he knew those words from and he said that 'xxxx has been saying it at school' it is on his new x box game.

His mother is a little eccentric and extremely loud but nice enough and I speak to her sometimes at the school gate and at she requested me as a FB friend so I accepted. I logged on this morning and she is bragging about how far xxxxx has got on it and that he was up till 1am last night as she couldn't get him off it. I am completely and totally shocked that any parent would allow a 6 yr old to play this. She has had mixed comments probably more than half saying their kids love it and saying the same as her and others completely against the fact that he is on an 18 game. She says as long as he good at school he has no rules at home, normally I would let it go, each to their own but I don't want her irresponsible (imo) parenting to rub off on my son. AIBU???

No of course YANBU, she sounds like a total dick but short of speaking to the teacher and telling them there is a problem re swearing, there isn't much you can do about it.

Just make sure your son knows not to repeat naughty words, don't really know what else to suggest.

What on earth does she think the massive 18 on the box stand for??

Some parents are fuckwits, to be avoided. Beyond that, there's not a lot you can do.

The new GTA is awesome but no way suitable for a 6 year old.

Nothing you can do to stop another mother allowing it thought but i would have a word with the teacher about the swearing and a word with your child that just because someone else uses a swear word they dont have to use it as well and everytime he did use it i would reforce the fact that said word is a swear word and not one he should be using.

YADNBU, and I second what Friday16 said. Some 'parents' are fuckwits. She's definitely one of them.

DD and I are currently having a battle of wills over Grand Theft Auto.

At the moment, her phone is locked down, her computer, and TV have both been confiscated and her allowance suspended.

This is because she was playing GTA which is not allowed as she is not old enough to play it. When the playstation was confiscated, she found it and removed it. Hence my going nuclear and removing all her gizmos.

When she surrenders GTA, she can have them all back. Not until then.

DD is 15. Any parent allowing a small child to play this game is not fit to be a parent. I don't think you should allow your children to play over there.

I would talk to teachers about the swearing and mention GTA....I imagine that they will be appalled, and may possibly be able to make an impression on her....maybe.

And there's me thinking I am a bad parent for letting DSs watch James Bond.

I love GTA and can't begin to imagine how anyone would think it's ok for a 6 year old. It's 2013, games don't look loke cartoons anymore, Mario and Sonic aren't the biggest names any more.

You'd get a strong enough response on this topic if the kid were 13, but SIX?

I mean, just... what?

I would talk to the school about it since he's picking words up there. Tell them where from and how and let them deal with it.

Why do people buy playstations, X Boxes and the like? They're expensive, the games are universally vile, forums of all descriptions are full of parents whining that their children spend too much time on them. Just don't have them in the house. Easy.

As soon as DD caves that playstation is leaving the house. Permanently. Never again. Absolutely ridiculous. You are completely right.

They are the equivalent to the Atari in my childhood.....and consoles are great if they are used and policed properly. Easy!

An entire medium is 'vile'? Really? Hmm

Really? How are games like Mario, Sonic, Guitar Hero, Lego Harry Potter etc. vile?! Hmm

And the award for stupid comment of the week goes to Friday13.

My son plants flowers and gardens for Pinata on my xbox. Vile?

StuntGirl · 20/09/2013 15:22

Ohh Viva Pinata is one of my favourite games ever! Friday13, you are seriously missing out out if you think an entire entertainment medium is vile Grin

OP, I would raise it with the teacher and say your son has picked up swear words from a particular child in class and you would appreciate them clamping down on bad language at school. At the same time explain to your son why he is not to repeat those words, and limit contact with the child if you think he's having a negative influence on your son.

I don't think anyone is going to say it's ok for a 6 year old to play GTA.

My eldest is 14, he has asked for it a few times this week to buy it with his birthday money. I know he has played it at his friends house so what can I do?

The day it was released this week apparently half his class were off 'sick' from school. Ridiculous.

I think it is a bit unrealistic to expect a gaming 15 year old not to play or want to play GTA but a 6 year old hasn't a clue about all the hype surrounding the game or even that it exists. He would be quite happy with sonic the hedgehog if that was all that was supplied to him.

JCDenton · 20/09/2013 15:42

Exactly, I hope this isn't one of those cases where they're boasting at how far he's got because they think 18 refers to the difficulty, as in board games. Surely nobody really thinks that though?

Surely...

GirlOutNumbered · 20/09/2013 15:46

I run a course every now and then for parents, talking about online dangers etc and you would be amazed about how many actually do think the age rating is for the difficulty of the game.

I think the students at school despise me, as most of the parents have now all banned COD etc.

Did you hear in the news this week about the 3 teens who mugged and stabbed a bloke expressly to steal his just purchased GTA game. They must have been watching people buy the game and looking for a likely victim to follow and attack. Chilling.

This is why parents need to make NO assumptions about what goes on in their kids' friends house and ASK/make it your business to KNOW what they will be doing on play dates and what level of adult supervision they will have. You just do not know how stupid lax some parents are.
