To think that you do NOT use naice wine as cooking wine?!

DP polished off the 1/3 of a bottle left of wine that I had treated myself to the night before by POURING it into the STEW

He says if it's not good enough to drink, it's not good enough to cook with.

I say that one does not casually use naice wine in cooking especially if it is the last bit in the house and that if you eat food that has been made with wine it does not make a difference if it is £3 plonk or naice.

Who is BU?

YABU. You shouldn't cook with wine you wouldn't be prepared to drink. It does make a real difference.

I didn't want to say as then there will be a debate about whether it was actually that nice haha

It was £7 casillero del diablo carmenere which is a treat for me (as it is all relative and it was a weeknight and we are not loaded)

But to cook with the last bit of it? Surely it is more important that there is wine to drink??!

And I defy anyone to tell the difference in cooked stew! (Between cheap wine and good wine)

if you think the wine is inferior, you shouldn't be buying it.

you use the best wine you can in cooking otherwise it's rank

It makes much more sense to finish off one bottle rather than opening another and having 2 part bottles

And I had been looking fwd to drinking it

Is it essential to put ANY wine in stew? Surely not..

Hmmm I'm sure I've read that the whole 'cook with naice wine' thing is marketing by chefs tied into advertising with supermarket chains (like St Jamie). So YANBU!

You'd never put a full bottle in your cooking, would you? So it would be silly to buy a cheap bottle for cooking as then you'd have to drink the rest of the shit wine. I can understand being pissed off there's no more wine in the house but not for that particular 'grade' of wine being used for cooking. Was the stew nice?

YANBU and I disagree with the posters saying don't cook with cheap wine.

Have you seen any of Raymond Blanc's recipes or prgrammes? He always boils the wine before using it to boil off some of the alcohol. Don't know what this is meant to do to the taste but surely if you are going to boil it before using it then it doesn't have to be that good.

How much wine cooking do you need to do in one week though? Surely would only go in a meat based stew or chilli type thing.. don't want to eat that every night. Even if you do, I still think you shouldn't buy poor quality wine to do it.
