AIBU?

To think I should get a replacement phone free

I have an iPhone 5, still under a year old the power button has stopped working so I cannot lock the screen or turn the phone off.

I rang up my contract provider who put me straight though to apple who gave me my options

  1. 10 working days no phone
  2. have a £600 lock put onto my bank account and I get to borrow a phone while mine is fixed
  3. drive hours to my closest apple store for a 10minute consult alot where if they cannot fix it in that time I get given a brand new phone
  4. see if my provider will give me a loan phone

Provider cannot give a loan but will give me £12.50 for being without a phone for half the month when my contract is over £60 a month..

I don't have a random £600 to be heled for 14+ days, we have birthdays coming up and a child just started school, I personally don't drive and for certain important reasons cannot be without this number for 10 days..

Aibu to think there should be somewhere local I can take it for a consult or be given a free temp phone since they will have mine anyway so I'm hardly going to steal the loan phone...

Can you take it back to where you bought it (or to that chain of shops eg car phone warehouse or 02) and they can send it away and give you a temporary phone?

I don't think it's unreasonable for them to expect you to go to an Apple store but I guess it depends on where you bought the phone from in the first place. If it wasn't from Apple then could you go back to the store where you bought it? If it's carphone warehouse for example then there's likely to be one near you if you're in the UK.

Nope apparently because it is an apple phone they cannot give me a loan phone only £12.50 for the inconvenience of being without a phone

I'd drive to the Apple store. They will either fix it, or you will get a new one.

How far away is your nearest store? Most cities have one now don't they?

Have you got an old phone you could put the sim in while you're waiting for an opportunity to get to the Apple shop?

Also would you care to name and shame your provider? Vodafone were this level useless when my Galaxy became sick under contract.

No it was collected in store and paid for in store

I know its a pain but go to the Apple store and they will just replace it. They will also restore it for you.

I would take the £12.50 offer and buy an unlocked nokia as a back up you can usual get one for under £20

Dame it is EE and nope because the SIM card is so stupidly small it only fits in an iPhone 5

I think the options you have are fair, it's just down to you to choose which one suits you best. If you can't be without the number you have, spend your £12.50 on a cheap brick of a phone to use for the ten days.

It sounds like EE who are being crap unfortunately. Apple are offering you a good deal so I think you will have to travel to their store. Where are you?

Broken find me a £10 phone that takes a SIM card that's like the size of your little finger nail...

So its fair that someone who could not drive and does not have £600 is without a phone for 10working days because of a faulty product???

You can get adapters for those sim cards so they'll work in a normal phone.

How far from you is the apple store ?
if at all possible I would gothere because you should get an answer on the day.

just about everyone I know who has an iphone 5 has problems with the lock button.............go to settings, general, accessibility, scroll down to physical and motor-turn on assistive touch, you will get a little white blob appear on your home screen, through this you can lock your phone and turn it off, still a pain but at least you can lock it in the mean time?

You can also send it in and they will send a new one back.

They were the options they gave me and I just drove out to the store.

You can get an adapter to put a mini sim into a normal phone...

You can get adapters to make the SIM card fit the cheap phones. Tbh I think they're offering you a fair enough deal? What are they supposed to do? Presumably they don't have many in store to just give away? Post takes a bit of time - you might find they say 10 days but its often quicker

Getting to the Apple store is your best bet, even if it's a complete ballache.

I did this last week as my iPhone 4S had lost wifi, and was 2 weeks off the 1 year warranty! I can't be without my phone for a number of reasons.

It was a 40 minute drive and as I stupidly hadn't made an appointment they could only squeeze me in 2 hours later (which I was very grateful for). But within 10 minutes of my appointment I had a new phone, mostly restored and fully functional with no loss of service. Can't complain.

a) Borrow cheapo bog-standard phone from friend/family/etc. Or look in Argos - I believe they're doing phones for £20(!)

b) Buy this or something similar so you can put your nano-SIM into a standard phone.

c) Put nano-SIM into (b) then insert into (a).

d) Send iPhone back to Apple while pondering their commitment to customer satisfaction.

Ok I guess iabu just never thought the customer should have to suffer or spend more for a faulty item...

Spend £50 getting a lift to the apple shop

Or

Buy shit brick phone minimum of £20 plus SIM card adaptor

Or

No phone even though I got the phone cheap because my contract is expensive

where are you?

xh had this issue (it's a known issue with the iPhone5 apparently) he took it to the apple store, they replaced the phone even restored it in store.

Incidentally, the iPhone is being taken out of circulation from the 20th of September to be replaced by the 5C, which is made out of iPhone 5 parts apparently (iPhone 5's with broken lock buttons perhaps?) .
