to expect otger coach passengers to move so I can sit with my baby?

wI recently got a coach from Heathrow to my home town.

I was travelling with my ds who is 8 months old, national express recommend that you bring a age appropriate car seat when traveling with a baby, they book you 2 seats under 1 booking.(it's very kind of them to give an infant an entire seat) we were one of the last to get on the coach and by tge time we arrived there were no seats together. There were lots of people sitting alone in a double seat.

None of tge passengers sitting alone in a double seat would move, I ended up threatening to leave the very grumpy teething out of routine baby next to a lady.

Eventually someone moved but I had to organise where he would sit and tge lady he was going to sit next to wasn't at all pleased that he was going to sit next to each other.

Aibu ( and an entitled mum) to think that people should move seats so a parent can sit next to their small child?

No, I don't think that is particularly unreasonable.

I suppose if I was asked to move once I'd got settled I'd be a but grumbly but I'd keep it to myself.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 10-Sep-13 19:28:26

How bizarre. Did you ask very nicely with a big cheesy grin on your face?

You will, as your OP alludes to (get some people saying it's your own fault for not getting there earlier etc etc) but it's a bit oof a sad state of affairs that no-one offered to move.

(I like sitting on my own on long journeys but I would have offered to move for you)

littlewhitebag Tue 10-Sep-13 19:29:29

Some people can be so obtuse and stupid- of course they should move.

On the other hand, I suppose the next time you need to learn to be early to get the pick of the seats.

GildedWingsOfGrace Tue 10-Sep-13 19:29:30

Maybe get there earlier so you're not one of the last ones to get on.

Some people might not realise that there is no other seats left together because it's not really their concern.

You moved someone and got your two seats together in the end so ...?

asmallandnoisymonkey Tue 10-Sep-13 19:29:33

I'm normally one of those "you don't deserve any special privileges just because you have spawned a child" people but in this case I don't think you were unreasonable to ask someone to move. I would've moved.

Sirzy Tue 10-Sep-13 19:29:51

Assuming you asked nicely then yes I think somebody should have moved.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 10-Sep-13 19:30:39

Gilded - that's true. Some people are in their own world and not really monitoring the seat situation for others

JumpingJackSprat Tue 10-Sep-13 19:30:57

definitely not unreasonable and i think its a bit pathetic of everyone else for you to have had to find somewhere for a grown man to sit in a coach with loads of single seats.

jenniferalisonphillipasue Tue 10-Sep-13 19:32:55

Of course you weren't being unreasonable. I can't believe people wouldn't move. You can get there as early as you like but that doesn't mean people who are able to move easily without the extra things travelling with children brings won't just push ahead of you.
What did they think you would do? Just let him sit by himself? I am astounded sometimes by our selfish society.

Tailtwister Tue 10-Sep-13 19:34:07

Very strange. I can't imagine refusing to move under the same circumstances.

HeySoulSister Tue 10-Sep-13 19:34:44

a few inches isn't going to make much difference if you both have an aisle seat across from each other is it?

maybe the seats couldbe reserved at booking or something,i don't know. but i'd happily move if I saw you wanted a double

HeySoulSister Tue 10-Sep-13 19:35:28

what 'excuses' did everyone give you op? or were they just a blanket no?

spritesoright Tue 10-Sep-13 19:35:30

I don't think you were being unreasonable and am surprised no one offered you a seat. They sound like stubborn grumps.

SomethingOnce Tue 10-Sep-13 19:36:10

I would've been pleased to help.

What a bunch of miseries.

kali110 United States Tue 10-Sep-13 19:36:20

I would get there earlier. Can see if from other customers view that everyone had allready got all their stuff sorted so would be pissed to have to move again. I know when i travel i take loads and would take me over ten mins to pack it all again. Didnt you have an allocated seat?whenever i go by voach i always have a seat number.

hettienne Tue 10-Sep-13 19:36:20

People can be cunts.

I had a similar situation, but the only seats with enough space for the baby seat to go in were at the front and the people sitting there refused to move because they get car sick so need to see out the window. I sympathise, but seriously - what did they expect me to do with the baby?

maddening Tue 10-Sep-13 19:37:32

Yanbu and they were unreasonable twats

froken Tue 10-Sep-13 19:38:01

I will try to get there earlier if I ever brave coach travel again, I came into the wrong terminal and there was a faff with me having to get a connecting bus. I wasn't the last and ironically the bus was fully booked so all the seats were full by the time we left.

OhTheDrama Tue 10-Sep-13 19:38:32

I can't believe that the lady grumbled about you putting your baby next to her! Surely that would have been her cue to move FGS!

ziggiestardust Tue 10-Sep-13 19:39:53

Oh my goodness! YANBU of course!! It's a woman and her BABY for goodness sake!

DawnOfTheDee Tue 10-Sep-13 19:40:18

Whenever i've been on the coach there haven't been any allocated seats. I'm really surprised no-one offered.

YANBU.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 10-Sep-13 19:41:45

I was once left standing up at an airport, heavily pregnant. Several people said "no" outright, even when I asked to sit down for a few minutes. I was gobsmacked. I may have sworn a tiny bit.

(so not really gobsmacked)

DoctorRobert Tue 10-Sep-13 19:42:02

8 months old, of course ywnbu. sounds like a coach full of utter cunts.

fairimum Tue 10-Sep-13 19:42:23

I did this recently and the nice national express driver asked someone to move for me! Think I was lucky!
