To think my neighbour is a snob, and a very strange one at that?

My car is in the garage today for a service so told dd this morning she would have to walk home, not a problem she does this most days anyway. Sat earlier and I see my neighbour driving into our street and dd is in the car so I go to the door to check everything is ok and this is the conversation that followed

Me- "hi, everything ok"

Neighbour- "yes fine, dd just wanted a lift home in a BMW today grin"

Me- "sorry?"

Neighbour- "yes, since you were not there at pick up dd thought it would be nice to get a lift in a BMW"

Me- "dd, did you want a lift in a BMW?"

Dd- "what's a BMW"

Neighbour- "aahhhh come on now dd, it must have been nice sitting in a BMW?"

Dd- (looking totally confused) "yes, thanks for the lift home"

Me- "thanks for that"

Then she smiled and walked off.

Was lovely that she offered dd a lift as it was starting to spit rain but was this really such a treat.

To put it into context a bit my car is average but only six month old, the BMW in question is very old (nothing wrong with that my last car was old) but I feel I'm missing something by neighbours attitude.

Reminds me of the episode of Friday Night Dinner with the neighbour obsessed with her Mercedes. Very snobbish and rather odd.

I'd just see that as a bad joke

It's the sort of thing I'd say to a stranger (have poor social skills) blush

grin Its quite funny tbh.

My old neighbour used used to leave for work looking very smart in his business suit with briefcase in hand. Problem was he worked in the same factory as my brother as a security guard. He changed into his uniform at work and the only thing in his briefcase was his sandwiches. His wife used to tell us all he worked in the legal profession. grin

Lmao.

Nothing personal, but I don't get it either. The only opinion I have of BMW's goes along the lines of they often have fecking annoying over-bright headlights when it's dark and are often driven by very impatient tailgaters.

SilverStreak7 Tue 10-Sep-13 15:45:05

LOL .. Perhaps she is being paid for using BMW in every sentence .

usualsuspect Tue 10-Sep-13 15:45:42

That's quite funny.

Especially the 'what's a BMW' comment grin

FayeKorgasm Tue 10-Sep-13 15:45:46

Do you live next door to hyacinth bucket??grin

yegodsandlittlefishes Tue 10-Sep-13 15:46:02

How old is your DD?

Yes, I do think that is weird. But it sort of depends on how well you know the neighbour. Does she have children the same age at tge same sxhool? (If not, what was she doing there?)

WafflyVersatile Tue 10-Sep-13 15:47:19

grin

Ah, gwan, gwan, gwan, you must have liked having a lift in a BMW. Oh, to be sure you did. It's a BMW.

I guess your neighbour really likes BMWs and thinks everyone feels the same.

Did she "accidentally" drop her Skiing & Cruise Bro-Shurs in front of you grin

My MIL is a bit Hyancith Bucket.

She makes out she is very very upper middle class.
The first time dh took me to meet her it was all china tea cups and cucumber sandwiches.

DH did a load of family research and found out her family were all coalminers from her grandfather back, including several criminals who served time and one that was transprted to Australia! She didn't believe him and refused to look at the research he had done.

The only thing she will tell you about her family is that her great aunt married the cousin of the family who used to own Dewhurst butchers!

Bluemonkeyspots Tue 10-Sep-13 15:56:52

Dd is ten, her dd is at the same school and the girls often play together plus our dh's work together but I don't know the mum apart from to say hi to. Before anyone gives me a row for dd getting in the car we live on a military base where everyone does this kind of thing for each other, although I feel like I'm now cheating other dc out of something special as I don't have a BMW!

lougle Tue 10-Sep-13 15:59:50

Aww sad I don't think she was being snobby. I agree with LaurieFairyCake - she was probably just saying something to break the ice and then couldn't get out of it.

usualsuspect Tue 10-Sep-13 16:00:21

Give her DD a lift and go on about how she wanted a lift in a brand new car.grin

Tee2072 Tue 10-Sep-13 16:06:21

But it was BMW! How can you not be impressed!

I love you're daughter "What's a BMW?"

Facebaffle Tue 10-Sep-13 16:14:10

grin

I have a friend like this who constantly refers to her car as "The Audi" rather then just a car confused

angelos02 Tue 10-Sep-13 16:24:27

'The Audi'! Love it.

I usually find it is people that didn't have much money growing up that are like this...exactly like Hyacinth Bucket.

Panzee Tue 10-Sep-13 16:26:07

My dad has a BMW. It's lovely and comfy. Even in the back. smile

Turniptwirl Tue 10-Sep-13 16:26:36

Bad joke but well meaning neighbour! I wouldn't judge their snobbery unless I had more evidence (any other brand names they keep dropping OP?)

mrsjay Tue 10-Sep-13 16:28:04

I love that your dd said whats a BMW grin I had a neighbour who had alittle convertable but I dont think it was a swanky one ( i know nothing about cars) anyway the neighbour said oh it is lovely to have the top down her little girl piped up no it isn't it is silly mummy mummy why are you silly

I have a fb friend who puts her BMW picture up in facebook once she has washed and polished it, with things like gleaming all ready for the sunday drive, maybe it is your neighbour grin

Pagwatch Tue 10-Sep-13 16:28:45

I call my car the mini. Dh calls his car the shitheap.

Beastofburden Tue 10-Sep-13 16:30:28

Probably is a car obsessive, doen't necessarily mean she would be snobby about other things. Some people do care about cars, my BIl does, and although he is a nice bloke he honestly thinks that other people are interested in/impressed by his choice of motor vehicle [hmmm]
