Ahhhh night time feeds

So ds2 is 5 weeks old. And I have just remembered the joy of night time feeds!!

AIBU to think the worst part is that tense but hopeful moment when they have finished feeding, have been burped and nappy changed and are in a lovely dozy state and you attempt to put them back in the Moses basket and you hold your breath..... Because that is the moment a perfectly happily 45 min night time feed has the potential to become a 2 hour nightmare as they decide not to settle / wriggle and writhe etc and you end up repeating the feed / burping / changing over and over again!!

I am currently holding my breath....

YES! He's drifted off! The dummy has fallen out, the eyes are half closed, he's making sweet little sighing noises... Finally.

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 05:39:49

I'm not alone !!!!!!!!

Up feeding 4 day old DS. Tonight has been. Much better than last night as milk has come in but am getting DH's cold! Argh!

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 05:41:17

Well done sour!

Ditsy79 Mon 09-Sep-13 05:41:52

Just finished feeding her...am going to attempt putting her back in the crib...I know that she'll start screaming as soon as she hears my head touch the pillow though.(hmm)

islingtongirl Mon 09-Sep-13 05:43:29

Yay sour! Enjoy some sleep while you can! wink

Hey boosie - I'm still going too so will keep you company, hope you don't get that cold!

SourSweets Mon 09-Sep-13 05:43:37

No, I spoke too soon.

Faith48 Mon 09-Sep-13 05:45:51

Still up.. Have put DS back in his Moses basket 3 times now with no luck. He is now again back on the boob.

islingtongirl Mon 09-Sep-13 05:54:16

Attempted to put DD down...she is wide awake...argh!

islingtongirl Mon 09-Sep-13 05:54:30

Oh rubbish Sour!

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 05:55:12

Hey Islingtongirl! How's it going?

Very pleased that I'm not alone. On the cold front I'm not too happy as (TMI warning) sneezing makes my stitches hurt!

SourSweets Mon 09-Sep-13 05:56:17

Oh dear Faith. What keeps me going is thinking "he will tire himself out eventually!" And someone on another thread told me until 3months they should only be awake for an hour and a half at most. So I use that as a count down.

Ok mine is definitely asleep now (a noisy sleep, but still). So I will see you again tomorrow night. Good luck.

Sammie101 Mon 09-Sep-13 05:58:56

Thought third MBM attempt was the one, in at 5:07, screaming at 5:23 confused

I have a horrible cold too so I can't sleep well, she started stirring earlier at half 1, half an hour after she went down so my OH cuddled her in the living room till she fell asleep (2 hours!!) so I could get some sleep. And now after a huge crying session from me AND baby she is back asleep in my arms on the settee!

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, plus I feel like the worlds worst mum because I ended up shouting at her hmm

islingtongirl Mon 09-Sep-13 06:00:02

Hey Boosie - not too bad, all things considered! How about you? Ahhh look its getting light now confused - Strangely makes me feel better though!

Night Sour, sleep well. Same time tomorrow?!

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 06:05:51

Oh Sammy that sounds rough!!! I hope you get some sleep soon [tea]

Islingtongirl, yep getting light! Can't believe I'm so thrilled about getting 4.5 hours sleep so far tonight. I'm certainly not looking forward to the next stage of the longer wakings.

Mooster1709 Mon 09-Sep-13 06:14:47

So pleased I've found you, if a bit late - can I join in?!

Have been wrestling with grunting baby since 4, having thought I was doing so well because she slept 12-4. Except of course I couldn't sleep then because kept waking up convinced she was about to need feeding. She's only 11 days old and am utterly knackered...

And what is with the grunting??

zippyrainbowbrite Mon 09-Sep-13 06:37:58

Hi all,

I feel your pain on the night feeds - we're having issues (which I'm really hoping to get sorted this week), so feeds take 1.5-2hrs!

Last night/ this morning DS (7wks) was up from 2.30-4, now again from 6, and I know after this feed he's only likely to sleep for 30 mins before he wakes up and decides its play time!

On the advice of a friend I've started to put a hot water bottle in his basket after I take him out to feed, then remove it as I put him back in . I've been doing this for a while now at night and he seems to go back down much better - I think it's because he gets all warm and snuggly on me, then his basket felt all cold. That and 10 mins of Ewan the sheep (white noise), and he seems to go off to sleep quite quickly, even though he pretty much always wakes up as I put him down.

Maybe worth a try for some of you, especially now the weather's changing?

Beautifulbabyboy Mon 09-Sep-13 06:40:25

Morning all! I am back and now feeling slightly guilty as my night wasn't nearly as bad as some on here! So sorry.

Anyway, if anyone perfects the MBM first time please can they let me know?!?

X

Ps the grunting is normal - technically it is their digestive system sorting itself out after birth and can last apparently for 3 months - practically it means even if they do go to sleep they are so noisy you can't! Ahhhh nature....

HelgatheHairy Mon 09-Sep-13 07:12:00

Good to know the grunting is normal but its baffling how someone so small can make noises that loud!

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 07:22:20

Definitely going to try the hot water bottle. I've been putting a blanket round DS when finishing feeding and winding so its warm when he goes in the crib. Dies that stop working??

White noise seems v useful. smile

Boosiehs Mon 09-Sep-13 07:27:39

Just hit 2 hours awake and feeding for most of that! I think ive run out of milk!!!!

SummerSevern Mon 09-Sep-13 07:31:49

I'm in too!
Just got 7wo dd down after a mammoth bout of constipation, involving me holding her legs and shouting 'Push!Push!' like she was in labour.
Not a bad night though. Fed at 9, 2 and 6 and went down relatively well, thanks to the good old Tranquil Turtle.
Shame I've been up all night with a cold!

BinarySolo Mon 09-Sep-13 13:21:39

Well ds2 has put on nearly 1lb since last weighed a week ago! Midwife has given me a gold star and called me breast feeder of the week!!

SourSweets Mon 09-Sep-13 23:24:42

Hello again. I went to bed at 8.30 tonight purely because baby was sleeping and I thought fuck it, this might not happen again. So it's only 11.20 and I'm on my second woke-up-to-feed feed.

I also have an incredibly grunty baby. I even started a thread about it a while back because I had no idea babies did that!

riskit4abiskit Tue 10-Sep-13 01:07:48

Hello! Have 6 day old DS asleep on my lap in bed
Have been wrestling with winding him, hope I can get some sleep soon!!

Boosiehs Tue 10-Sep-13 02:08:36

I'm now getting paranoid that I'm not offering enough milk to the baby. He fed 20 mins ish in one side then only about 10 on the other.

Midwife said he'd lost too much at first weigh in do an trying to feed him up! He's just really sleepy after the first 10 mins or so. I even changed his nappy after first noob to try and wake him but to no avail!

He's a big baby (born 9lb11), not sure whether anyone else has any experience of this ?

sad
