I have just tried to buy a washing machine online from John Lewis.
My bank have picked up the payment on my card as suspected fraud because it was a large amount, and have blocked both the payment and my debit card.

I rang Lloyds to sort it out and have been on hold to the fraud department for 55 long long minutes.

I'm absolutely bloody furious: I'm 5 months pregnant, I've been in work all week, I'm tired, my dinner has gone cold, I'm hungry and I just want my evening to start sad I need my card unblocked so I can use it this weekend - mainly to pay for the several loads of washing I need to do at the laundrette cos my washing machine broke on Tuesday WHICH IS WHY I WAS TRYING TO BUY ONE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

They are COCKS.

How strange, this happened to me with Natwest when I was buying my washing machine from JL. Maybe it's a popular spending destination for card thieves confused

They want me to go into the branch with photo ID to prove who I am WTF??????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh fgs how annoying are we not allowed to buy big items, RBS did that to me at Christmas time i was buying from a rock music website Tshirts and a few other bits and they stopped payment and I had to phone them apparently it was an unusual transaction, so you need to go into tsb tomorrow before they will authorise it, tell them you will be closing your account when you are in, they will play ball then

On the other side of the coin, before children I put £5400 on my card for a new motorbike
I was refered in the shop to someone on the phone who agreed that I was who I was supposed to be and yes I did want a motorbike
Took 10 mins max

I had this happen some years ago. The bank were suspicious because I made a payment for fuel in X town, then tried to pay a very large (£800) vet bill in a town 100 miles away.

They were still dubious when I phoned them up and explained that I had paid for fuel in X town, so that I could drive to Y town to pick up the German Shepherd Dog whose bill for treatment was £800. They were finally convinced when I dropped the phone because the dog pulled me across the room to see another dog wink

Happened to me too when I was trying to buy first a new cooker, and then a new fridge, from John Lewis. BOTH attempted transactions were flagged up and cancelled, with two weeks apart, by my bank. Hsbc.

I bought from Currys in the end. There I could at least get a purchase confirmation!

1 hour 32 mins?? You're sure they haven't hung up on you? That's crazy - you need to get tweeting or something.

My bank have never ever queried anything I've bought, in any currency, of any amount, anywhere in the world. Anything I do is fine with them. And that actually worries me a bit - if I was a victim of fraud, they'd never spot it. So while I can see this is a pain in the arse for you, it's swings and roundabouts I reckon.

Blocking the payment is insane mine have always rung up after to ask the details of what I have purchased ! That makes more sense.

It would appear the John Lewis website is a hot bed of fraud confused

I've spoken to 3 different people in between being on hold but they keep putting my back on hold.

This has never happened to me before and I'm a prolific online shopper grin

How annoying. But I am a Lloyds customer and I rate them very highly.

I appreciate the extra vigilance.

My dh had £800 taken from his current account this week - paid to a Pakistani airline. He is one of those types that never, ever checks his balance or on-line statement. Had his bank (Barclays) not alerted him to this unusual activity he would be none the wiser.

For the record, Barclays put the money back into his a/c on the same day and have already replaced his connect card.

Ds gets a phone call to verify random purchases if they're super expensive. My dislike for the main high street banks gets worse when I read stories like this!

Oh I don't mind them being vigilant, but it should only take a 3 minute phone call to sort out not...<checks>....1 hour and 47 mins!!!!

I bank with lloyds and years ago I took out a loan with them for a car. I paid for said car, drove it away and filled it up with petrol(bought car where I worked, 120 miles drive home)

Lloyds stopped me paying for petrol as my I'd spent 4k and then 90 quid on petrol.

Erm yes, that would be the loan you gave me for a car which I signed for at a branch 2 miles away from car showroom and 3 miles away from my address and petrol station. Not really suspicious is it?!

It took me an hour in petrol station on hold until they unblocked card

Same thing happened to us buying a bed from john lewis, not lloyds but nationwide. Apparently John lewis website is one that has a lot of fraudulent card useage on it, or so said the bank when we phoned up!

Ugh! Barclays do this to me all the time and its such a pain in the arse!

Rather than blocking the purchase and the card, why can't they try calling first to validate?

LloydsTSB did this to me when I was buying Eurostar tickets online - to get us to Eurodisney which I'd paid for earlier by phone on the same card. I was on hold for about an hour,while the Eurostar website kept timing me out for the last available tickets for Eurostar on the day I wanted. To say I was stressed out was an understatement - as the poor guy who finally took my call found out when I yelled at him hysterically!

They were quick enough to give eight grand of my dead cousins money to a woman who had conned the death certificate, luckily the cashier made her open a account at the bank or she would of been off with the money

My bank (natwest) was slated on the "what company to avoid" thread, but...
My card has been stopped 5 times in 8 years. Times 1,2&3 were at the start of years 1,2&3 of uni. Loan and bursary would go into account within a week of each other, then I'd go to student support and pay my tuition fees by card. The student loan office had a phone on the desk as almost every natwest card would be declined, followed by the phone ringing. I had to pass security and the card was immediately unblocked and transaction approved. Same when I bought a car. Loan went in, car payment went out, credit card payment failed. Phone rang. Cleared security, card unblocked. Cash point in Columbia, gave me £7 (to see if card worked) then wouldn't give me £100. Phone rang. I offered to call them back that time! Went on Internet, found fraud Prevention phone number, called back, cleared security, card unblocked. Longest phone call? 3 mins. Love natwest!
OP, give them hell, it does NOT need to be difficult!!

DH had similar with John Lewis a few weeks ago, he is with Santander and they flagged it up as a potential fraud.

Fucking Lloyds stopped my card when I tried two buy two tickets to the SeaLife Sanctuary! grrrrrrr!

I have had this problem with them a few times but it did not need such a long call to sort it out then thank god, and when there was fraud on my account I ended up seriously out of pocket because of them freezing everything, late payment charges for bills that bounced etc. Maybe they have cut staff in their phone centres. Complain!
