This comment just came up on the radio news, supposedly said by Jamie Oliver about one of the families he was working with in his new TV show.

AIBU to wonder how the fuck what you eat relates to what TV you have?

Surely this just reinforces stereotypes of the people likely to have bad diets through lack of education on the matter? What a bullshit statement.

I suppose what he was trying to say is that if people focused on spending money and time on what they eat, rather than what and how they watch tv, then everyone would eat more healthily.

However, Yanbu. He is being a knob.

It's all well and good telling people they should live a life on beans and pulses and rice etc but everyone needs some enjoyment in life otherwise it's all a bit depressing and pointless.

I guess it's about priorities. It sounds like the family said they couldn't afford healthy food (can't think of another context it would be relevant). In that case I agree with him that your children having a healthy diet is more important than a massive TV.

if you can afford to eat take away meals you can afford to cook a healthy meal

often it is laziness why people are not bothering to cook a healthy meal

This flat-screen TV thing pisses me off. We have three (!) but the one in our bedroom is about 7 years old, quite basic as they go now and probably practically worthless if we ever tried to sell. But it looks quite flash still and you can't tell it's not a new one.

It cracks me up the stuff about plasma tvs.

You can get one for £300, less if its second hand.

I claim the bare minimal benefits (a small amount of HB) and recently bought a tv. To buy my tv I sold items. I sold and sold and sold until I had enough money.

People also borrow money to buy TV's and they end up paying far more back - keeping the poor poorer.

Any talk of TV's is such BS.

Also, WRT to food. When we are our most poor we will be on dinners of fish fingers, chips and beans.

Fresh veg, fresh meat, fresh fruit is appallingly expensive.

His statement it's effing ridiculous.

I would assume the same. That it was a response to someone saying they couldn't afford to eat healthily. And agree priorities are obviously all wrong.

Junk food is hardly fun all the time anyway, and healthy eating is not about beans and pulses. All supermarkets have recipe cards for wholesome meals that can be done cheaply.

Didn't think about context, that would make more senseof had claimed that they couldn't afford it.

Fairy my favourite food are beans and lentils, but mine are usually coveted in butter or ketchup

Did they go to currys, absolutely starving, but thought "nah I'll buy a tv instead".

If this about healthy eating, that's a slightly different issue to not being able to feed yourself.

These people can afford junk food, it tastes nice and is addictive, it's easy so they stick with it.

People who are living on the breadline, with pennies to spare don't make the choice between tv and food.

Jamie Oliver is an idiot.

I hate cookery programmes now lol!

Standing there in their humungous kitchens with every available herb growing somewhere and every type of gadget they could need. Also without toddler under their feet!

Yes I'll just be standing here making my own effin fresh pasta and simmering my sauce made from all the stuff I "sourced" from the garden while getting ready for an evenings work and letting the house fall down round my ears

Here is the article. He hasn't a clue about grinding poverty. About Brighthouse stores.

He is another one who would have "the poor" with nothing but the clothes on their backs before they're allowed help.

Is it considered junk food if its not made from scratch with fresh veg and fresh meat/fish?

Or is junk food take away food?

Dunno if it is snobbery of the "big TV is for oiks" variety; I imagine JO has several enormous tellies in each of his (various) homes.

It IS food snobbery - if I were poor, I'd spend my little cash on REAL food, not gadgets. But JO misses the point; cheap food is often extremely tasty and filling. Good recipes but made with cheap ingredients often aren't that good. Especially if you were never taught to cook well.

Nobody in this world irritates me more than smug, self satisfied Jamie Oliver. And I'm not a nice person, lots of people irritate me . He would eat himself if he were chocolate whilst lecturing others about the dangers of chocolate.

Yes, it is. If I was to buy fish fingers and chips, it would be a damn sight cheaper than fresh cod and fresh veg.

If I was to buy sausages and chips it would be a damn sight cheaper than fresh pork and fresh veg.

You can make a decent meal for less than the cost of ready meals. Meal planning, organisation and keeping things simple is all that is needed.

You can feed a family decent food on a budget.

Sirzy it is unless you can make lentils, rice and a whole chicken last seven months.

If you're working shifts, long hours etc you don't have the luxury of time.

Anyway, as I said they can afford junk, they like junk, what's the problem? It's snobbery. And it's not as if people are choosing plasma tvs over food.
