No one wants to see your nekkid silohuette or your turkey pan soaking.

True.

And opaque glass (i know, I know) looks like a strangeness on the front.

Yes, yes, yes.

I agree!

Odd. So you should base the design of your house on what nosy strangers want to see?

My kitchen is front and back and my bathroom (main family one) over the front door - my neighbours shouldn't be looking Grin

Yabu. I used to think the same until I had one. Much better to have lounge at back to enjoy peace of the garden.

But nets are still good for resident privacy.

Yup.

YOu should base the design of your house on what stangers don't want to see.

I was thinking the exact same thing earlier when we went to visit SIL.

Walked down her street, noticed a downstairs bathroom window with a mirror on the sill, then the pot of toothbrushes standing next to it, then the shape of a man very obviously standing at the toilet having a wee just behind them.

Was very Blush because I'd been staring at the toothbrushes thinking "It must be weird to have a downstairs bathroom on the front" and then realised the man could probably see me peering in at him them.

Both my childhood home and my grandparents, where I stayed every holiday, were bungalows.

It's only after years of living in third floor flats and proper houses that it seems odd to have your bedroom at the front of the house at ground level.

Our bedroom is on the front (ground floor), whivh means our bathroom, kitchen and lounge are all on the back.

Id find a kitchen at the front odd too, though a friend has just bought a newbuild and hers is like that and its such a lovely house that I never even thought about it til.now.

My kitchen is on the front of the house-do I give a flying fuck? Hmmmm that would be a no Hmm

Actually, my kitchen is the easiest room to see into from the road here, but my house is side on to the road, which isn't entirely helpful to Chaos question.

It's lovely having your kitchen at the front. You can watch what's going on outside whilst you're washing up. Very handy when you have small children.
And then sit in your living room gazing at your garden.

Great Grin

My kitchen is at the front, I love having a nosey out the front whilst doing the dishes. Plus, my nekid silhouette is a joy to behold for the neighbours.

Part of my kitchen is at the front, but it's only the utility bit, and the window is just a small high up one, so I doubt if anyone passing by could see into it at all especially with all the junk stored on the windowsill In fact the only windows in the front on the ground floor of our house are that small one, a frosted one in the cloakroom and a long narrow horizontal one running along by the stairs. Our sitting room is at the back and has massive windows looking over the garden - a much better view than the rather dull cul-de-sac street in front.

Lots of 50s houses in our area have bathroom and kitchen at front. So it doesn't seem odd to me and I've never seen any outlines of naked people/weeing people either!

Bathroom at the front means we have another bedroom at the back, much more peaceful. Both children have back bedrooms.

another kitchen at the front here - much more sensible.

The last house we had had the kitchens and bathroom at the front. It was a 1980s ex council house. Cheaper to put them at the front as less pipe work needed as the utilities came to the front of the house. I prefer it, I feel quite overlooked where we are now, with the lounge at the front, e.g. I could have the blinds open now, but since I'm wearing cycling shorts and a vest top I wouldn't want all and sundry turning their car around at the end of the cul-de-sac seeing me slobbing on the sofa!

We have the bathroom at the front but that is about all - there is a downstairs toilet but the window is at the side. The dining room is also at the front but we are hardly ever in that room. I don't like the bathroom being at the front but the kitchen can be wherever it is; I'm not bothered.

We have the kitchen at the front and when I first moved in I thought it was really odd. But then, people watching whilst doing the dishes is soooooo much more fun than staring at the alleyway (which was the option in my previous house). I kinda see what you are saying about bathrooms and silhouettes though, but surely in most houses the back neighbours are close enough to see anyway? Just get a blind and leave it closed!!
So, yeah, YABU. Sorry.

You find this arrangement in American ranch style houses and some other styles too. I thought it odd when I first went to the US but when I thought about it, I now see the 'small kitchen tucked away in some out of the way spot' where nobody would be disturbed by the sounds or smells of work there to be odder and a sad comment on how women's work was seen.

Having grown up America where most of us had to use the kitchen door as children to avoid messing up the front hall, I can't be arsed to care where the kitchen or bathroom are.

I do agree about opaque glass in front door. I have opaque glass in my rented house and I hate it with a fiery passion.

We rent a 70s two-storey house that has the utility room and little study at the front (as well as the living room). I know my mother, who has this very strong sense that you put your best foot forward where the neighbours can see, finds it very strange that the more 'prestige rooms' are not where they can be seen from the road. She thinks I am missing the point when I say how lovely/ comfortable and private it is to have the kitchen and playroom leading onto the garden.

Kitchen and bathroom at front here too.

Good for being a nosy nelly in the kitchen, not so great when you're sat on the loo and the window cleaner starts his round at your house Blush

In Sweden where I come from, kitchens are usually at the front. I always find it gives me a warm cosy feeling to be walking home in the dusk and seeing all the kitchen lamps glowing and catching a glimpse of families around the dinner table. But then kitchens are far more living spaces there.
