AIBU?

To not tip the owner of hair salon?

Normally I try to go to other hairdresser within Salon, so this confusion doesn't happen. Then I tip about 10%.
Sometimes my fav hairdressers are not available, and I ask for the owner.
So, the owner gets all the profits. The staff only get wages & tips.
AIBU not to tip the owner? Or should I have?

I tip if I'm happy with the service & result regardless of who I've had.

I do but the salon I go to is only tiny with just the owner and a junior hairdresser.

I thought it wasn't the 'done thing' to tip the owner. In the salon I used to go to the owner always did my hair, but she was collecting for a charity and I always put money in the pot for that, in lieu of a tip. Now I go to her house and she doesn't get a tip at all, just the money she charges. A tip is to supplement low wages, surely, and doesn't apply when you are dealing directly with the owner or as I do, going to her house (or she visits yours).

Especially if it's a new business the owner might be earning less than the other stylists as minimum wage doesnt apply when it's your own business. You only get paid if there's any money left after all other bills have been paid.

I hate tipping, IMO you are buying a service and the price charged should cover the costs and also a decent wage for the employees plus profit for the owner.

I don't tip my hairdresser or my beautician, they are both the business owner, I reluctantly leave a small tip for the junior is the manage to wash my hair without drowning me.

I also hate tipping in restaurants but will do as it is expected if I get excellent service.

Standard practice is not to tip the owner of any business, but it is up to you entirely. I don't think you'd offend the owner if you did!

I'm with FeetUpUntilChristmas if I'm honest, I object to being expected to tip unless something exceptional has been done.

I have a mobile hairdresser currently and do tip as she is very flexible re squeezing me in and charges very little especially considering she has to travel to me.

I dont tend to tip in a salon though, the charges more than cover what is being done so i dont pay extra on top. I rarely use salons nowadays as mobile is so much more convenient and far more cost effective for the same result.
